Lt. Ranald McDonell of Lot 24, 8th Charlottenburgh

Lt. Ranald McDonell of Lot 24, 8th Charlottenburgh

Classification: Query
Lt. Ranald McDonell was granted 200 acres at lot 24, 8th Charlottenburgh in 1797.

My gg grandfather, Allan McDonell, was deeded the property in 1832 via a Sheriff's Deed.

Does anyone have information on Lt. McDonell and his descendants, if any? I would like to know if there is a connection between him and Allan.

Thanks,
Linda MacDonald

I'm not so sure Lt. Ranald Macdonell of Leek is your man. His land grant had been in St. Andrew's, Stormont County.

Charlottenburgh mostly settled by Ship Macdonald emigrants. Lot 24, conc 8 is not on Duncan Darby's list (Glengarry County Genweb homepage)Ranald of Leek was Lt during Am Revolution (2nd Batt KRRNY) but other Ranalds likely Lts too (ie Ranald Macdonald of Ardnabie) He settled lot 'f' in front raisin river and died in 1806.

McNiffs Maps may help or Pringles book on Early Settlement ..
Good luck.

Hi Evelyn,
I have a copy of the original land record for lot 24, 8th Char the first line of which states that all 200 acres were granted to Lt. Ranald McDonell by the Crown on May 27, 1797.

The second line states that Donald McDonell, Sheriff, granted it to Allan McDonell on 5 July 1832.

Is it possible that Lt. McDonell did not live there and that the property was vacant until my gg grandfather obtained it?

I have found it difficult to reconcile lot 24, 8th Char with either McNiff's map or Pringle's book.

Do you know of a guide of some sort that would make it easier to figure out what lot 24, 8th Char corresponded to in the original grants?

Thanks,
Linda

For what it is worth , I gleaned this info from my cousin Francis Ross McDonald book titled Legacy of Tradition .
Lt. Ranald McDonell "Ardnabie" UE Loyalist (1706 - 1792) , brother of Captain John Dhu McDonell VI Ardnabie . Both are sons of John McDonell IV Ardnabie married to Mary MacDonald daughter of Ranald MacDonald 10th of Glengarry . Lt. Ranald McDonell died 1792 on Lot "f" Charlottenburg , he was married to Henrietta McDonell who was a sister to John McDonell 5th of "Leek" . Their children were Janet McDonell 1748 - 1845 married to David Gunn UE ; and John McDonell "Ardnabie" UE 1754 - 1824 who served 1st Batt.84th and later served as a Captain War 1812 in Flank Company with his two sons Allen and Alexander McDonell [their mother being Elizabeth MacDonald noted as a "Garenish" MacDonald] .
This later Allen McDonell might be the one who apparently inherited said Lot 24 Con 8 from his grandfather Lt. Ranald McDonell . This Lot 24 would be across the road from the Lot 24 Con 9 owned by Lt. Ranald McDonell's nephew Roderick Rory McDonell and his brother Allen Bhuide McDonell on Lot 23 Con 9 Charlottenburg [both these latter are sons of Captain John Dhu McDonell VI Ardnabie .
It would also seem that this Lt. Ranald McDonell's grandchildren were born on Lot 11 Con 13 Lancaster Twp.
