Looking for Information on Allan Mee Born in Belleville Ontartio in 1908
Hello,
I am looking for any information on my grandfather Allan Mee. He was born in Belleville Ontario, in 1908. What he has told us in that his parents when down to the States and died when he was about 5. We think his parents may have emigrated from Ireland but we are not sure. He ended up in a Seattle Orphanage with his older sister. He never shared any information about his family ie who they were ect. We have no documentation such as a birth certificate. He claimed to have run away from the orphanage when he was about 11-13. He never spoke to his sister and didn't like to talk about his childhood at all. We have tried the Ontario Archives and there is no trace of him. He died in Jasper , Alberta in 1987 and spent most of his adult life in British Columbia mainly Penticton. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated as we keep hitting dead ends.

Re: Looking for Information on Alan MEE Born in Belleville Ontartio in 1908
Hi, You know / that your Grandfather Alan MEE = was born in Belleville Ontario in 1908 Registrations of Birth - may have been required. Check with Govt of Ontario Vital Statistics Dept Perhaps he had another given name / middle name ? Parents to the USA - when Alan was aprox 5 years of age - BORDER CROSSING RECORDS - there can't be that many MEE families travelling at that time frame Is it known When the parents passed away - Where in the USA the parents passed away
Alan MEE - and sister were placed in an Orphanage in Seattle Washington area. How old were the children when they were placed in the Orphanage
There will be paperwork - who helped place the children - family member - Social Services - Childrens Aid etc . There should be records of Alan MEE - leaving / running away - from the Orphanage when he was aprox 11 - 13 years of age.
If the children were placed in an Orphanage in the Seattle area - perhaps the parents passed away in Washington State
Do you know the name of the sister of Alan MEE - perhaps you will find the name of parents through her.
What years did Alan MEE spend in Penticton British Columbia Canada Passed away in Jasper Alberta in 1987 - Who was the informant ? - was there any reference to birth family?
Canada Census - 1911 - does not find an Alan MEE - If he was born in 1908 - does not find a child in that age group.
Have you searched USA Census - perhaps Alan MEE will appear with family

Re: Looking for Information on Alan MEE Born in Belleville Ontartio in 1908
Hi, The only documentation we have with his birthdate on it is his marriage certificate. I have contacted the Ontario archives and they have looked for birth and baptism records for him and found nothing. He never spoke of his childhood in any detail with my mom or aunt. All we have is what he told us. I tried the government of Canada to see if I could get anything about his parents with his social insurance number and they said he wouldn't have required a birth certificate. The only given name we have is Allan Mee however I did find a census from 1972 where he was listed as Allan B Mee but my mom and aunt have no idea where they B came from as far as they knew and were told there was no middle name. He told my mom he went to the states with his parents but we have no records and I have looked but any Mee I can find at that time also died in the U.S. He was placed in a Seattle Catholic Orphanage and I have contacted the diocese but they have no record of him. He once told my mom that his sister abandon him so he was in the orpahnge. We have looked for death certificates for Mee and records in Washington but have not found much. I also have looked for border crossings as in his later life he was a greyhound bus driver and his route was from Penticton down into Washington but found nothing. I have looked at the 1911 census and can't find him at all. The first census I have found has been from 1949 when he and my grandmother moved to Penticton when my mom was four. I know he also spent some time in Roberts Creek BC and during the Second World War he worked for bombardier out of Chillawak for the government as he was unable to fight because he had only one kidney. Again this is all what was told to you mom. He came to live with my family in Jasper in about 1980 after a bad car accident. He died here in the hospital in 1987 we have his death certificate.

Re: Looking for Information on Alan MEE Born in Belleville Ontario in 1908
Unfortunately we don't know anything other than he had a sister. Any time my mom or her sister would bring it up he would say she abandon him and he didn't have a sister anymore. We know she was older but that is it. His full Birthday that we have on his marriage and death certificate is September 30, 1908 Belleville Ontartio.

Re: Looking for Information on Alan MEE Born in Belleville Ontario in 1908 - Marriage
Hi, You have a MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE ? - Is this the short form - the one we usually have - as proof of the event - OR - is it the Long Form Registration of Marriage
If the Long Form - it may show - Name of Bride and Groom - Age -Place of Birth - Residence - Occupation - Religion Names of Both Sets of Parents - including Maiden name of the mothers - Place of birth of the parents - may show occupation of the fathers . Religions Date of Marriage - Place of Marriage /name of church / address Religious service - By banns or licence. Names and address of Witnesses . Name of Clergy
REGISTRATION of DEATH - / Long Form Death Certificate - depends on the knowledge of the Informant - -of little help re names of parents - unless the Informant had the correct information.
He felt he was abandoned by his sister , One wonders how much older she had been. - to have the authority to place him in the orphanage - without being placed herself. Perhaps there is more to the story - is it possible that the sister - might actually be the parent? the reason that Alan was not open about his childhood
Searching the 1901 Canada Census - finds only 28 MEE families in Ontario.
City DIRECTORY - for Belleville Ontario - and perhaps surrounding area Search for the MEE Surname prior to and after 1908 Information for the directories are usually taken the year prior to publishing -
There should be BORDER CROSSING RECORDS for the family:
HOSPITAL RECORDS - BELLEVILLE ONTARIO - by 1908 All Births had to be REGISTERED - with Govt Vital Statistics.. Perhaps the Archive does not have , cannot find the record Govt Vital Statistics should have all the information Perhaps there was an error in the spelling of the surname ?
Religion: Catholic - Baptism - record - Churches in BELLEVILLE Baptism records may be Archived - perhaps one of the churches listed above - can advise

Did Alan and Helen MEE have a daughter named Carol?
This 1950 article mentions some possible friends - Mr and Mrs Wally HOWIE, Mrs Fred HUBBARD, and Mr and Mrs Lyall HUBBARD.
