Hello,
I'm trying to figure out exactly where a place would have been. The grave marker for my second great grandmother gives her birth place as "Ramsey, Township of Perth, Canada West" in January 1841. She died in 1875.
Some other clues: I know the family was living in Perth County in southwest Ontario as of the 1852 census. However, I can't find any reference anywhere to a Ramsey township in that county.
Family legend has it that her mother was Mary Murphy one of the Peter Robinson settlers. There was a Ramsay Township in Lanark County near Perth that was settled by the Peter Robinson settlers. But I'm not sure if that would be referred to as "of Perth".
I also don't know who exactly put the tombstone up, whether her husband or family or both. Her husband was Irish, but had never been to Canada, so he would have no firsthand knowledge of the area, just word passed on to him from his wife and her family.
Anyway, I would love to get any expertise or suggestions as to where this Ramsey township would have been. I suspect I may have a trip to some archives in my future, and I want to make sure I go to the right place.
