Questions about Obituaries in 1870's

Was it common for obituaries to be printed in newspapers back in the 1870's in Kingston? My great great grandfather died in Jan. 1871 and I'm wondering if an obit might provide clues to who his parents were.

Might, might not - if you give his name someone might check for you

The individual I'm looking for was George Abery. He died Jan. 12, 1871 in Kingston. I don't think any of the newspapers of the area online. Maybe the Kingston Historical Society will have something.

Surnames: ABERY
Hi, How old was George ABERY when he passed away Jan 12 1871? His birth date/ year.
From Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid:
ABERY, George
Cataraqui Burial Register Volume I (1853-1875) Frontenac Kingston KG-99-6

From my experience -20 years. Obituaries very seldom mention the names of the parents - unless the deceased is a child. There are times when an obituary will - give a history for the deceased - and may mention the parents accomplishments interests etc - names and locations of family at the time.

There may be a Registration of Death - don't know what information early Civil Registrations might contain - later ones mention names of parents if known to Informant.

Large Public Library - May hold newspapers in their collection - on microfilm - for the time frame of interest -

He was only 38. I was hoping to glean some additional information about his family (parents, siblings, etc.) from the obit. I'll see if one of the libraries in the area may have access but as you mentioned parents weren't often mention.
