I am looking for information on my GGGgrandparents, John and Isabella McKnight. They were born in Ireland around 1788, came to Canada around 1830 with thier son John Jr. (b:1825). They settled in Hinchinbrooke, Frontenac District in 1831. They had another son, William, born 1838 in Kingston (not sure why Kingston), who is my GGgrandfather. John and Isabella were older when William was born, which makes me wonder about the parents/son relation. John Sr. probably died before 1861, as Isabella is listed as a widow in the 1861 census. I discoverd via internet search that there is a John and Isabella McKnight burried in the Verona cemetary, which I believe is quite close to where they settled. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Verona Cemetery transcription
McKnight, John died Dec 10 1894 aged 70 years
Olive Godfrey, his wife 1880--1909

OCFA indicated McKnights - John, Olive, Oliva A, Catharine, Isabella

Only one John was mentioned and he is married to Olive Godrey - possibly the son of your John and Isabella?

I don't have the OCFA reference for Isabella but she may be the d/o John and Olive as ancestry shows she married Jacob Walroth and he is buried in Verona Cemetery.

Thank you for your help. Yes, the John you mention is the son of John and Isabella. John Jr. did have a daughter Isabella, probably named after her grandmother. Thank you again.

Are you a Deyo descendent as well, and possibly a Meeks descendent?

Thanks from Nora

I don't know about Meeks, but Ann Deyo / McKnight (married to William McKnight) from Frontenac Ontario Canada was my GGgrandmother.

William McKnight is the son of John and Isabella McKnight.

How many children did William McKnight and Ann Deyo have? Having a tough time finding them on a census. In my files I have one son for them named William James McKnight born aout 1867 who married Alice Lavinia Meeks and then names of four children for them. Do you want to write to me directly?

Thanks from Nora

I show 4 boys, John George, William James, Sylvenus, and Alfred Edward.

William shows up in the 1851, 61 and 71 census records.

The story goes that John McKnight left Ireland, went to Scotland to learn his trade as stone mason,& then military and later returned to Scotland again to marry Isabella Thompson. They came to Upper Canada abt 1827 and worked on the construction of Kingston Market place as stone mason. He was then recalled to service and send to Egypt by the British Army. Isabella returned to Scotland where John re-joined her after Egypt. John was then ordered to Canada and fought in the Battle of the Windmill in 1837. Life in Hinchinbrooke began after that time at Con 1 lot3. Their place of burial is unknown...

Thank you! This is interesting information. Any mention of the source? Also, I think John and Isabella had a son Robert McKnight.
