I have never gone into any depth working on the Snider families who lived at Portland in Frontenac County (sometimes Addington County?) but have several in my files.
One such family is Jacob Snider born about 1802-1803 married to a woman named Roxalana or Roxey Laney. I have names of 12 children for them and don't know how accurate that is.
No one ever seems to know what Roxy's maiden name was but I think I found it last night- Bill Snider (a descendent of Jacob and Roxy?) posts info that this Jacob was from the USA, possibly from Pennsylvania. I wondered if Roxy was from the USA as well. On a death registration for one of their children, Roxy's maiden name is given as "Silsberry".
On the death reg. for daughter Almira Snider who married Peter Vankoughnet, she is listed as Marie Snider Vankoughnet, born at Portland. Father Jacob Snider- mother's maiden name given as SILSBERRY with no first name but that she (the mother) was born at Sacket's Harbor, New York. Informant was Peter Vankoughnet, husband of deceased. Almira died May 12, 1909 at Rainy River District in Ontario.
I have no one else in my files with surname "Silsberry" however, I have seen people trying to find info on families named "Sixbury", but the surname may be Salsbury or Salisbury. I do have several Salisbury individuals in my files including a Martin Salsbury born 1777 in New York State, married to Eve Alcombrack or Alkenbrack in Columbia County, NYS, nine children for them born between 1800 and 1823- if Roxy Laney was born about 1802, could it be possible for her to belong in this family? I have first child Lucas born 1801 and next John born about 1804. Just a thought and worth investigating....
If anyone has additional information about this Snider family, please post here or write to me directly.
Thanks from Nora
