I have just found the name Nantais and think it is very possible it is the name I have needed all along. My great grandfather was William Noantay, b. about 1847, lived in Grand Haven, MI area. I have not found any other Noantay's in my searches. I finally found Isidore and was able to link him as the father of William.
Very little is known about Isidore. He owned land near Grand Haven and Grand Rapids, MI, that the Ottawa Indians lived on. He was a ferryman at the Thornapple River near Ada. He died abt. 1885 at the age of 90 (name listed as Nontitt). His wife's name was Josetti. He was probably in this area of Michigan prior to 1840.
My great grandfather is listed on the Durant Indian Roll. It is possible that Isidore's wife was Indian, or that Isidore also was part Indian.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
