I have learned about the Goldens through my marriage to Thomas Giles Golden who is the son of Elizabeth (Betty) Jean and Grant W. Golden. Grant is a direct descendent of Richard Golden (son of Richard Jasper Golden). Richard Golden was Grant's great great grandfather. Grant and Betty had 5 children:
Beth - Sept 26, 1946
Laura - May xx, 1949
Jeffrey - April 28, 1954
Ronald - June 1, 1956 (
Thomas Giles - May 17, 1959
Interestingly enough, Betty Golden's sister married a Wigle and lived and died in Amherstburg. The Wigles have both died in the past two years.
Back to Richard Jasper and his children's emigration to Canada. The 3 eldest children sailed from Sligo in 1850 and travelled to Canada, then to Buffalo and finally to Detroit. In Detroit they stayed with Anne Black's sister, Mrs. Pettypiece. They purchased the family farm in Amherstburg and it had a small building on it. They bought the land from the British government, department of Indian Lands (the family has the original bill/deed). The rest of the family emigrated to Canada in 1852 from Sligo. We understand that Maria, Jasper and Sarah were trained to be teachers. Anna references Trinity College at Dublin University where Jasper finished his training. We believe that they built the stone farmhouse in Canada in 1854.
Here is the information on the lineage of Richard and Anne, (all born in Ireland, County Sligo, Tubbercurry, Rathscanlan). Only Anne is unconfirmed. Last October we commissioned the County Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Society to research Anne Black. They could not find any birth or marriage records or the parents of Richard Jasper either. Very disappointing. They suggested contacting Trinity College in Dublin regarding Jasper's education. This is an outstanding item for us.
Interesting enough we have a copy of the Griffiths Valuation 1858 and found an entry for Mr. Roddy for the 35 acre tenancy that was sold to him by Richard Jasper Golden before leaving for Canada in 1852.
Please advise if you'd like more family information. The Canadian "Golden" name has pretty much died out. This generation has 3 girls and one boy. His name is Payton James Golden. He is the son of Ron Golden. I believe that Jasper's direct descendents were Helen and Nora Golden, two spinster teachers. They died at a ripe old age around 1997 and named the Windsor Art Gallery as the benefactor of their estate. They were my father-in-law's aunts and my husband's great aunts.
