Rice, Hugh and Alfred Baker in Yarmouth, Elgin County

Rice, Hugh and Alfred Baker in Yarmouth, Elgin County

Surnames: Baker
I am trying to find any information someone might have about Rice Baker, Hugh Baker, and Alfred Baker. They all appear in the 1881 Census. Hugh and Rice lived in the same household. I am trying to figure out if they were all brothers, sons of Stephen and Maria Baker, who immigrated from Great Britain.

Rice is on 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in NY State with Hooper family but not there in 1880. No sign of Hugh.
There is also a Rice Baker on1840 census

Hugh is on 1861 census Yarmouth Elgin but no sign of Rice.
Alfred Baker, b 1833, is in Yarmouth as well but he is married.
1871 census both Hugh and Alfred are still in Yarmouth but no sign of Rice.
Hugh is with a Lewis family on both 1861 and 1871 census.
Unfortunately on Alfred's death registration his parents names aren't entered.
Hugh and Rice both died before parent's names were required on the registration.

What possessed Rice to move to Canada after living in the US all those years?

Alfred's immigration date on 1901 census is 1837 so he must have arrived with his parents.
Rice's death rego gives his birthplace as Wiltshire England but Hugh's and Alfred's just say England.
Registration began in 1837 in England so they all were too early for that.
First census was 1841 in England.
Maybe one of the Bakers had an obit in the paper naming family members.

The transcription for the gs for Rice BAKER, Hugh BAKER and Hanna BAKER LEWIS is on the Elgin OGS web site at: - http://www.elginogs.ca/Home/ancestor-indexes/gravestones/st-...

The death registration for Hannah's son Edward A. LEWIS confirms that his mother was Hannah BAKER. and footstone for Rice gives him as "Uncle Rice" so good bet that at least Rice and Hannah were siblings.

FamilySearch records give that Rice BAKER was born 8 April 1810 Holy Trinity, Shaftesbury, Dorset, England, son of Stephen BAKER and Maria. Hugh BAKER was born at same location 28 Oct 1813 same parents. A Hannah BAKER was born to parents of same name. Christening date was 25 May 1825 and place was Semley, Wiltshire, England.

See Elgin OGS lookup policy for checking for obits in the St. Thomas newspapers at: http://www.elginogs.ca/Home/lookup-policy

Thank you! This has been very helpful. Hannah Baker was a daughter of Stephen and Maria Baker as well. She immigrated to New York in 1836 along with her parents and siblings Esther, Jane and Alfred. I can't find an immigration record for Hugh or Rice, and I have also come to a dead end finding where the Stephen and Maria Baker family went once they arrived in New York, other than a death of a Stephen Baker in Randolph, Mass. in Feb. of 1858. The older children of Stephen and Maria were born in Shaftesbury, and the younger ones in Semley, and I have been trying to find something that would tie them together. Tying Rice and Hannah together as siblings does that. Both Hugh and Rice were living with Hannah Lewis in the 1881 Canada Census. Finding Alfred in Yarmouth makes me feel there is also a connection there.

Thank you! This is a puzzle I have been working on for awhile. I am thinking that Rice came to live with his brother and sister (Hannah Baker Lewis) when he got older. Hannah immigrated to New York in 1836 with her parents and sisters and brother Alfred.
