Looking for a family history for Squire Johnson who made a land petition in 1819 as a resident of Southwold Twp. on the Talbot Road. Thirza and Sarah, his two wives, were buried in Seminary Cemetery, Yarmouth Twp.

Recently found the death certificate of my gr gr gr grandmother Elizabeth (Johnson) Eveland b. 1828 Canada. Her parents are listed as "Square Johnson" and "Thurza Ferris". She was married to William Eveland, lived in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and moved to Michigan about 1833. William's brother John Eveland was married to Charlotte Johnson... who is most likely Elizabeth Johnson's sister (her death cert lists her parents as S Johnson and Thynia).
Internet suggests that Squire Johnson and Thirza Ferris were married 9 Aug 1807 New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut. I have not found documentation of this info.
The info in you post seem to fit this family.
Could you send tombstone info on Thirza Johnson and the land petition info???
Would much appreciate the help!!

The Elgin OGS is in the process of linking all the Elgin County petitioners to the UCLP images on the Archive Canada web site.

We have completed Bayham and are half done with Malahide. I've gone ahead and linked Squire JOHNSON's petition which is pp. 346-348 on microfilm C-2110

It can be accessed from the Southwold Land page at:

https://sites.google.com/site/elginbranchogs/Home/ancestor-i...

or directly at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/00...

He petitioned in 1819 as a Thomas Talbot settler in autumn 1815 being located on 200 acres of land - see petition for all details.

There are almost 1200 UCLP for Elgin County and we hope to have them all linked by this summer.

THANK YOU!! It's a wonderful thing you are doing!
Have other families that lived in this area so will do much more research here.

I did make an error in my previous post. Elizabeth Johnson married Wm Eveland about 1845 and then moved to Michigan where their first son was born. (I had previously stated 1833... that's the date Wm listed on his 1900 Census as immigration to USA.)

Barb & Bruce,

I am looking for a Sgt. Squire Johnson who served in the 2nd York Militia during the War of 1812. He served as a private from April 25 to May 15, 1813 and as a sergeant from November 24 to 30, 1813. I have online access to the militia company payrolls if you would like copies.

A second Squire Johnson served in the 5th Lincoln Militia in overlapping payroll periods. This suggested that there were two men with the same name. He served October 17 to 24, 1812 (5L35b). He served October 25 to November 24, 1812 (5L393). He deserted November 25 to December 16, 1812 (5L399). He served March 22 to June 24, 1813 (5L141). He served July 23 to 25, 1813 (5L173). He served September 23 to October 24, 1813 (5L233). He served June 20 to July 24, 1814 (5L263).

These two militia regiments were recruited from the area from Oakville to Hamilton. Some men served in both regiments. Having two men with the same name in this area suggests that they were somehow related.

I am researching Upper Canadian life during the War of 1812 and have access to a number of primary documents and name indices. Enquiries from the Elgin branch of the OGS are welcome. I have access to at least 3 war loss claims made by Bayham Twp. residents, 5 from Malahide Twp., and 22 from Southwold Twp.

Glad to help
I have updated my posting for Squire on my Ancestry site:
see

http://trees.ancestry.ca/tree/935571/person/24891217059

Note that while many submitters give third wife as Nancy BLISS, her maiden name was Nancy CAZAT / CAZAD (and many other spelling variations) widow of James BLISS. She is single or widow in 1870 with son and she died at Cedar Rapids in 1892 indicating that Squire had likely died before the 1870 census.

I believe the Squire JOHNSON of Yarmouth Township, Elgin County is given in the Men of Upper Canada (1828 Militia Rolls) on page 151; 3rd Reg. Middlesex Militia; 5th Company - he is with son Randolph (looks like father and son at extreme age ranges- Not far away is Thomas SHIPPY. These are all south Yarmouth settlers and where son Randolph resided until his death in 1865.
