Trying again to find the obit of Elijah Clark, d 30 Dec. 1894. Elijah is in Iona Cemetery.
Mary Ann, Elijah's sister, married William Lumley.
I know they had a William John Lumley.
Eijah's father, John Clark, married for the 2nd time to Charlotte Mills.
I have not proven to my satisfaction that John Clark's parents were a William and Mary Clark. The same land did stay in the family.
How near is the Lumley House to Elijah Clark?

I found on our Elgin OGS website a newspaper article regarding the life insurance settlement of Elijah Clark in 1895. This material was recently added to our website, so you probably haven't seen it yet. The newspaper clipping was found in a scrapbook we recently had access to. There are some other Clarks there too. If you go to www.elginogs.ca , then "free online publications", you will find the "Garton Scrapbook" listed. If you want a copy of any of the articles, it tells you there how you can get them from us. You can e-mail me directly if you want any copies: jmccallum@rogers.com

Hi, in the "Houses of West Elgin" by Don Carroll, pg 70, is this: "Elijah Clark was the son of John Clark who we have described as what we believe to be the first settler of Dunwich."
On pg 72:
Land Registry
21 May 1807 - Lots A, B & C, in concession 9, Dunwich - Crown to Colonel Thomas Talbot
8 June 1824 - Lot A, SE 1/4 - Talbot to John Clark - 50 acres.
11 May 1865 - John Clark to Elijah Clark.
8 June 1824 - Lot B, NW 1/4 - Talbot to Willima Clark - 50 acres.
14 January 1837 - William Clark to John Clark
11 May 1865 - John Clark to Elijah Clark
21 May 1807 - Lot C, SE 1/4 - Crown to Talbot
12 Dec 1807 - Lot C, SE 1/4 - Talbot to Samuel Garnsey - 50 acres.
"It is interesting to note here that, by this time, Garnsey must have already had his settlement duties done to be eligible for a deed. Although Garnsey is not mentioned very often except when he was burned out by the Americans in 1814, he must have been a very early settler of Dunwich, long before the Burwell, Pearces, Storeys and Backuses, and perhaps arrived soon after the first settler, George Crane.)" Note: spelling can be Garnsey or Guernsey.

Now my thoughts:
William Clark MAY have been a brother to John or his father.
I have a daughter to William Clark (Eleanor)that married to Alvin M. Smith (of the Grove Smith family in Dunwich) she first married a Johnson in 1822 and had a son William Johnson in 1823. She married Alvin M. Smith on 8 Jun 1825 and had an additional 11 children with him. Many of their children ended up leaving Canada about 1840 and moving to Boone County, Illinois.
The Samuel Guernsey Sr. connection to me:
Samuel Guernsey or Garnsey Jr. married my Great-GrandAunt Ann Thomas 11 Apr 1833.
More on Samuel Guernsey Sr.:
Mary Garnsey's tombstone was the 1st recorded monument in the
cemetery. Iona Cemetery located North side of Talbot Rd. Lots
1 & 2, Southwold Tswp., Elgin Co., Ontario, Canada.

Inscription - "Willow - Sacred to the memory of Samuel Garnsey
who departed this life April 15, 1847 aged 82 years. Also of
Mary his wife who died 20 September 1820 in the 52nd year of
her age. Forgive. Blest shades, the tributary tear that
mourns your exit from a world like this. Forgive the wish that
would have kept you here and stay'd your progress to seats
of bliss."

Samuel Guernsey Sr. then married Mrs. Rhoda Tyrrell Duncombe
widow of Thomas Duncombe on 23 Jun 1825 in St. Thomas. Rhoda is buried beside Thomas Duncombe.

Thanks Jim!
I have been reading all the new items. Just as soon as I have a list I will write to you.
Will take it slowly.
The Elijah married to Margaret B Ellis, widow, is also related some way through the Jones side as well as Clark.
My Rachel's Elijah could be William and Mary, to John C and Ruth Hamilton to Rachel Clark and William Peter Jones to Richard Mann Jones and Leah Smith to my mother Helen Atwood Jones to moi.

Thank You.
I know the first part of the deeds are correct. If the William that married Eleanor is his brother, I really don't know. A William and John did come from New England to Ontario and in their deeds listed the cost three barley corns...
As far as I can track John Clark and Ruth Hamilton came as young married from NS. I have tracked Ruth Hamilton.
I have a deed from William Clark and Mary to John.
Ruth was the daughter of Henry Hamilton and Mary Rice. Archibald Hamilton and Mary McGregor were Henry's parents and I believe Ashabel Rice and Percissa Knight were her parents. One of Ruth's aunts married a VanVelzor. Her grandmother Mary McGregor married a Daniel VanVelzor(father) after Archibald Hamilton died.
I think Rosanna was the aunt that married VanVelzor and they were in Elgin.
I believe the Samuel Clark in Elgin, born in NS, could be John Clark's brother. From pictures I have seen Samuel looks like Elijah. Where John Clark and second wife Charlotte Mills Clark are buried I do not know. Ruth Hamilton Clark is on the Iona Cemetery List.
I do appreciate all the help.

Just one clarification for you.
The Eleanor Clark that married Alvin M. Smith was a daughter to William. I have no idea yet whom William was married to. Soooo, you have good almost matching data then.
We need to find out if William was (for sure) the father of John Clark.

Stay in touch. There are are group of us Grove Smith chasers and one is heavily looking for the lineage of Eleanor Clark Smith.

Hi Jim,

Any news on the Eleanor Clark Smith ancestry, Eleanor that married Alvin M. Smith as her 2nd husband?

I have been looking over much of your research, and I'm interested to see if you or your fellow researchers have found anything more on Eleanor Clark.

Also, you have corresponded at times with Winifred Miller. I am related to her via John Clark (our 2nd great grandfather born about 1800 Nova Scotia). Winifred descends from his 1st wife Ruth Hamilton and I from his 2nd wife Charlotte Mills.

Interestingly, I recently discovered that my 1st great grandfather, John Clark (son of John Clark & Charlotte Mills, b.1840 Dunwich, d.1916 West Branch, MI) married for a second time to Margaret Foster, nee Smith, daughter of Aaron Smith & Harriet Lumley. This Aaron Smith appears to be the son of Grove Smith and Rebecca Tobyne, according to your research information.

I'd love to share information with you.

There was a Clark that had Eleanor as a wife. Not my John Clark. I have a couple of Deeds where a John Clark and William Clark bought land from Talbot c 1820. Know two John Clarks were in the area and I believe one married a Lee. Just saw your reply today. As I can't find another Elijah I am sure he was my great grandmother's brother. This is why I have searched for an obit for Elijah. My Rachel should be listed as a sister. Elijah died 30 Dec. 1899. Thanks
