Hi, I am looking for ancestors, descendants, relatives of Eleanor Clarke, Born Jan 6, 1806 in N.B. Nova Scotia. Her father is believed to be William Clark. I am also looking for information on William and his wife who I don't know. They farmed somewhere around Dunwich, Sterling, and Port Stanley from somewhere in early 1800's to about 1853 when they went to Illinois. Smith family believed to have come from Mass. or CT sometime after 1810 census. Marriage bonds of Ontario show Alvin Smith, yeoman and Ellen Clark, spr, both of Dunwich, b: Montgomery Smith and William Clark, both of Dunwich, yeoman. 8 June 1825 at Sterling. P. 94
I can't find a Sterling, Ontario. Montgomery Smith is brother to Alvin Smith and their father is Grove Smith who was married to and had a number of children with Rebecca Tobyne Smith before moving from Mass. and CT. I am looking for information on Grove and Rebecca including who their parents are and heritage. I don't know why they moved to Canada but I suspect that it was because they were loyalists and many of them moved to Canada around the war of 1812. Maybe someone could verify that. I can list their kids but I believe that Jim Thomas did that in another post. I hope to hear from him.
I found an 1880 Elgin County atlas on the internet. Can the location of the Smith land still be identified? Also is there any information on them in this Sims book I have been reading about?
Eleanor's census records all show her birth place as Nova Scotia but on her tombstone in McPherson, Kansas it says "Born N.B. Nov." I initially thought N.B. was New Brunswick but that is a completely different province than Nova Scotia. The obit says born in Nova Scotia so unless the provinces were split up, there must be a N.B. somewhere in Nova Scotia.. Maybe someone can clarify this.
Eleanor's parents are both listed as born in England and I don't know who her mother is or where or what part of England they may be from.
Alvin & Eleanor Smith's children born in Elgin County include Lucy A. in 1830, Henry Thomas 30 June 1834 @Port Stanley, Harvey J. in 1836, Mary Eliza in 1837, Alvin Montgomery in 1843, Sary J. in 1846, Charles Benedict 24 Jul 1847, and I don't know where or when Carrie U and Hiram were born.
.
My great great great grandfather is Alvin M. Smith who was married to Eleanor. I don't know when Alvin died but I suspect it was in the 1850's or 60's. . I don't have any further information on the parents of Grove and Rebecca Tobyne Smith or where they came from.
Eleanor Smith and sons and daughters went to Belevide (Boone Co) Illimois around 1853 or so. Some sons including my great great grandfather Henry T. Smith lived in Rockford, IL next to Belvidere
In May,1871 Eleanor, Sons, Charles B. Alvin M., Harvey J, and daughters Mary E. Higbee Phelps, Ella G. Irish, Sarah J. Wing, and Lucy A. Moss all homesteaded in Turkey Creek township, McPherson County, Kansas. They later sold out and moved next door to Little River in Rice county, Kansas. Henry T. Smith ended up in Little River in 1884 also. He was a stone mason. Alvin M. with in the Civil War with Co. B. 95th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
Thanks for your help, Britt PS, My sister and wife are the real genealogists in the family. I will have to get them involved as we get into this any deeper.
