I now live in the Lumley homestead (est.1822). My parents bought it in the 60s, and I have been here for 4 years with my family. I have been to the library and surrounding cemetaries trying to get information on the house and family. If anyone has any info please notify me. I am trying to bring the house(diamond in the rough) back to its 'original' beauty. Have found papers on wood dating 1859--have ripped up subfloor in the upstairs and there are 20-24" pine planks!!!! Thanks so much.

Hi Katherine,

Don't know exactly what you are looking for, but I have researched a lot on this family. They married into my Clark line, and I could possibly be a direct Lumley descendant (there is a mystery as to the last name of my 2nd great grandmother who many believe to have been a Lumley).

Anyhow, I have a book titled "Houses of West Elgin", and in it is a picture of the house you live in dated 1997. The book says the house is located in the centre of Lot C. Concession 9, Dunwich 9357 - Iona Road:

"This is truly the Lumley Home for it was here that Joseph Lumley lived who was the father of all the Lumleys and who is buried beneath one of those salt stone slabs in the old Lumley graveyard south of Iona. The house is an oblong frame building situated at the top of the second hill south of Iona. It has been added to at different times and some parts have been removed, for at one time there was a long verandah extending beneath the Gothic window and having two doors opening on to it where now can only be seen one. Beams on the inside ceilings show where thee house has been changed, for in different places there are different levels on the ceilings. The lumber for the main part of this house in all probability came from the Talbot mill.
Built to accommodate two families this house which had a large kitchen at the rear was larger than it is today. It is one of the exceptionally old houses of Dunwich, the Lumleys coming to settle here the same time as the Willeys and Watsons."
St. Thomas Times-Journal, 21 November 1933, page 6

In the May 1985 in a "Built to Last" article in the "Voice of the Elgin Farmer" the present owners of the house were interviewed (William Edward Gerald & Lillian Joan Yates):

"The Yates did complete renovations throughout the house....Jerry said when they first got the house it had hydro and that was it, no plumbing or indoor bathroom....The entrie house has been fixed up from top to bottom....Under the wallpaper in one room they found a newspaper that mentioned the Crimean War (1853-56)."

More from "Houses of West Elgin":

"Joseph Lumley was born 4 December 1789 in Southampton, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, the eldest son of John Lumley (1766-1842) and his wife Nancy Harrison (1766-1837). Joseph married Mary Ryan (1787-1862) also of Cumberland County. They came with their six children who had been born in Nova Scotia, to Dunwich in 1819 with the other Lumley families.....They settled in the centre part of Lot C, Concession 9, Dunwich.....they may have chosen it because of the Talbot Creek. The Lumleys built a water mill both for sawing and grinding which served the community well for many years. When he became established, he built his large house, using lumber sawn in his own mill.
The Lumleys, having lived in Nova Scotia for many years, were expert maple sugar makers."

Joseph Lumley & Mary Ryan's children:

Margaret who married George Mills
Marian who married Edward Harris
Harriet who married Aaron Smith
Ann who married William Thompson
Elizabeth who didn't marry
James who married Louisa Curtis

James inherited the farm from father Joseph.

Hope this helps to give you a little history about the house and first families.

Melinda

Thanks Melinda. My father is Gerald Yates--that is how I came to live on the property. Keeping the farm in the family!!! My dad has the "Houses" book. It helps a bit, but we are really unsure of the age of the structure, and the original facade. I have some info on the family that the St Thomas library had. They have a book on the Lumley families. Thank you so much for your interest--we hope to bring the old house back to its past beauty. Katherine

Katherine, It is my understanding that upon john lunmleys death, his son Thomas Lunmley inherited the family home. Thomas was a barrell maker. Thomas second wife was my ggaunt Eliza(Brown)Mills who he married in 1855. Thomas had children by his first marriage, and three by his second(1881 dunwich, elgin Ont. census)the youngest died in 1955, Alma(Lumley)Near. Thomas Lumley is buried outside of Iona in Iona cemetery, with his first wife. Thomas was born in 1808 in Southampton, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia. Eliza Browns father was Robert Brown also born in Nova Scotia(as was Eliza). Robert died in 1865, buried Iona Cemetery. He was a local Iona farmer. John Lumley had his own saw mill, he brought from Nova scotia, so your home was probably built from his saw mill. John came to Iona from Nova scotia in 1819.

Hi,
I also have the "Houses of West Elgin", by Don Carroll.
the statement: "It is one of the exceptionally old houses of Dunwich, the Lumleys coming to settle here the same time as the Willeys and Watsons."
St. Thomas Times-Journal, 21 November 1933, page 6"
My family came from the Watson family mentioned (David and Sarah at Watson corners in Southwold).
Two Watson sisters to my Great-Grandmother (Sarah, daughter of David and Sarah) married Smith brothers (Montgomery and George Willis Smith - brothers of Aaron Smith). Not sure if this is the same Aaron Smith however and the statement of Harriett married Aaron Smith caught by eye. Do you have any further info on Harriet and Aaron Smith?
ON the Willey family:
I have Christiana Willey b.1809 d. 1850 marring Thomas Lumley.
I also have Patience Willey marrying (1817) to James Samuel Tobyne. She died 21 Apr 1820 in Childbirth. James Samuel Tobyne then married Susan SMITH (sister to Montgomery and George Willis Smith) on 1 Jan 1821 and they had 10 more children. The Tobyne family then moved to Boone County, Illinois about 1837 (the rebellion??).
Many moved to Boone County, Illinois about that same time.
Many of the Smith and Watson's families moved too. My Great-Grandparents did as well in 1847 (Peter Cruth Thomas and wife Sarah Watson)with son (my Grandfather) John Allen Thomas b. 1845 in Southwold.
