My ancestor is Darius Harns. He lived in the area of North Fredericksburg (near Napanee). He named his son Darius as well. His son lived in Cramahe Township near Brighton. There is a street in Brooklin Ontario (just outside Whitby) that is called Darius Harns Drive. No one seems to know why it was given this name. If you have any information that would solve this mystery, I would appreciate it if you would let me know. Thanks.

Get in touch with the Town of Whitby. They would have a group responsible for naming streets in new subdivisions with a list of names and the history behind those names.

I don't know the relation I just found this street today when I was going to an address there from an ad on Kijiji. But I can tell you if this is the true spelling as in HARNS then it must be a distant family relation.

My family the HARNS had a farm in Ameliasburg township on Salem Rd. My grandfather was Gladwyn Harns and my father was John and his brother Andrew. My grandmother Edith was from the Brown family line. My Dad (John) had a cousin (DOUG HARNS) who helped organize the bird sanctuary on MacCauley Mountain in Picton ON known as Bird City. It is there today on the way out to Wapoos from Picton at the end of Hwy 49 which intersects with middle of town.
The Chatwoods are cousins but not sure now the relation history right now.

So Darius likely if the spelling is accurate (it dates back to William the Concorer and there is a family crest in the Palatine on the Rhine River in the Black forest in Germany with this name so it is the proper name with no E or anything else.
There was an historian many years ago from California that put together a family tree (Dorkus Oranger mem? sp?) listing a lot of information. Anyway thought this may help you in your research. My mother still has the book with the family history that was researched then so if you want I can find the title you can check it should be in the local public library I believe.

Good luck and let me know I'd be interested too.

Hello Bonnie,
Are you still looking? The Fisher family and the Smith family were also from Upper NY and came to Fredericksburg in the late 1700's and then in 1828 moved to Columbus and then Ashburn (near Brooklin). In 1800 Darius Harns was listed as a witness to the wedding of John Smith and Sarah Fisher. There are also a number of other families from Fredericksburg who moved to the area and resettled here. Perhaps this has something to do with the naming of the street?
