Looking for the parents of the Smith Wilson who married Jane Cinnamon ca 1850. They appear with other Wilson's on the 1851 census for Clarke-Durham then in Manvers in 1861. Any information appreciated. Sheila

Re the naming system....I agree, however I can't find the other Wilson's on the 1851 Clarke-Durham census aside from Smith and his family. I think the Eleazer with wife Margaret McMahon ended up in Schoolcraft, MI and he cites James as his father. I'm trying to kind of back track from Smith Wilson to the James and Benjamin on the 1851 Clarke-Durham census.

Thanks so much for the information on the probate records. I've worked through them and I don't think they are from the group I'm looking for. I also went through the marriage information and while I think James and Jane Cinnamon are probably part of the family group, they aren't the parents of the Jane Cinnamon who married Smith Wilson. Her parents were James Cinnamon bca 1794 Ireland and Rosa Ann. They are on the Clarke-Durham 1851 census under the spelling of Ssenomon. Thanks again :-)

Exactly.. :-) The group on the 1851 census starting with Smith Wilson and wife Jane down through the last child of Benjamin and Phebe is what I'm concentrating on.

It looks to me as if Smith Wilson may be a brother to Benjamin Wilson living next door. I know that Benjamin and Phebe Comer were married in Darlington on Dec. 27, 1842. I have the marriage record from the Trent Archives but it doesn't list parents for either party. Benjamin and Phebe are on the 1851 and 1861 census for Clarke-Durham and then disappear. Phebe married William B./Wilson B. Johnson in Worth, Sanilac, MI on May 24, 1867. They apparently divorced and she married again 1881 to George W. Gates in Alpena, MI.

There are almost no Comer's in Darlington in the 1842 time period so I'm assuming she came from out of the area or the spelling on her name is wrong. She was born ca 1825 when married to Benjamin Wilson, a bit older when married to Wilson Johnson and born ca 1830-35 when married to George Gates. When she married George Gates she gives her name as Phebe E. Comer Johnson.

Would very much like to find out of the Phebe married to Wilson Johnson and then George Gates is the same Phebe married to Benjamin Wilson and who her parents were. A continuing mystery.....:-)

Thank you for the information on the marriage of Mary and Adam Sharp. I knew they married but didn't have the rest of the information, i.e. residence of parents, etc.

I have wondered about the elder James Wilson in the group on the 1851 census. If his age, at 70 is correct with a birth place of USA, that means a DOB of about 1781. The Benjamin Wilson "of Oshawa", one of the original settlers up there, had a son named James with Elizabeth Lockwood (supposedly) that would have been born in that approximate time period. I know he died 5-17-1863 at age 73 and is buried in Oshawa. I remember reading something to the effect he never married, but...you don't supposed the James in this group could be him???

The other thing I've looked at is the number of Protestant Irish in that area and time. So many of the Irish are United Presbyterian or C/England as is the Wilson group in Clarke-Durham. The one wrinkle in that theory is Hiram and Lily Wilson who are with the James and Benjamin group but are Quaker and apparently related to John H. Wilson and his wife Clarissa in Norwich.

I will follow up on the Burleigh fonds to see if anything can be found there.

Again, thanks so much :-)

Benjamin Willson

http://www.sprague-database.org/genealogy/getperson.php?pers...

Following this, according to our family documents he lived for a short period of time in Pennsylvania and married a widow, Elizabeth Lockwood (whose first husband had been killed by Native Americans) before leaving for Canada about 1790. Identifying himself as a United Empire Loyalist, he became the first settler of Oshawa, Upper Canada (now Ontario) outside York (now Toronto) and raised with his wife at least four more children. Of further interest is that his will from 8 April 1820 includes provisions for each of his surviving children, including those by his first wife, Sarah Sabin, and using the married names of all his daughters save one. This would indicate that he kept up some contact with his Putney children after leaving Vermont.

Benjamin Willson died on 5 March 1821 and was buried in Oshawa, Upper Canada. Elizabeth Lockwood, said to be born in 1760, died and was buried in Oshawa in 1840.

It bears this inscription “In Memory of Capt. Benj. Wilson.” Another son was named David, and of him a well authenticated story is told to this effect, that at the time of the war between England and United States in 1812 .....
