Am searching for information on the listed surnames in Durham Co. especialy from Whitby and Cartwright areas.

Brothers John and James Nesbitt, with their sisters Eleanor and Sarah, came to Canada settling in Durham Co. John and his wife Mary McQuade/McQuaid farmed near Cartwright. James and his wife Tamar Highfield farmed on Thornton's Road north of Oshawa (Whitby).

There were three other brothers as well but have no information about them. Can anyone help with these missing brothers?

Would like to contact anyone researching any of the surnames ... have much info to share and a 'ton' of questions left to answer.

I have some information, not much, on a Samual English Nesbitt. He was born in Durham, Canada sometime before 1860. He married Anna Marshall, born in London England. Their son, my grandfather, Arthur William(or Andrew) was born in IL in 1878. They had several other sons, One named Joseph, but I know very little about them. Arthur died in Spokane WA in 1959 0r 1960. Do you have anything on this particular line.?

Hi,
I don't know if these relate to your Nesbitt's or not but I was at the Oshawa Union Cemetery the other day looking for some gravestones and I noticed the following stone:

First Side: Nesbitt / B. Muriel Thompson / Dec. 12, 1909 - Dec. 16, 1998 / Wife Of / Russell S. Nesbitt / Feb. 20, 1908 - Mar. 30, 1999

Second Side: Nesbitt / In Loving Memory / John Albert Nesbitt / Oct. 26, 1875 - June 14, 1965 / Husband Of / Hattie May Scott / Aug. 12, 1879 - Mar. 12, 1965 / Reginald Gordon Nesbitt / Dec. 12, 1906 - Oct. 30, 1924

If you want additional information, I can do an obituary look-up for them. Just let me know, as it would be no problem.

Cheers,
Gwen

Hello,
I just saw your message on the Nesbitt family at the Ancestry.com message board. My 3rd great grandparents were John and Sarah (Nesbitt) Taylor. I believe they were both born in Ireland, but they were married in Norton, Durham, England. One child, John, as far as I can tell, was born in England, but his brothers were born in Quebec, where my 2nd great grandfather, Moses Taylor, was born. John and Sarah died in Quebec.

I don't have any information on the Nesbitt's. All the Nesbitt's I find seem to be in the United States. I don't have parents or siblings for Sarah.

If you have more information on Sarah I would appreciate hearing from you. My email address is mlee2001@gci.net

Thank you,
Myrna

Hi Myrna

Sorry but our Sarah Nesbitts don't match up. My Sarah was born in Ireland and came to Ontario where she married William Hyland.

I have found info about Canadian / Ontarian Nesbitts to be sparse as well. Good luck with your hunt.

Mary

Have been reading your query and some of the replys...I have s book on the Hyland family which includesthe following: Eleanor Nesbitt b. 1802 d. 27 Aug 1878 married to William Hyland b. 1800 d. 24 Jan 1867. William and Eleanor lived on a farm in the 3rd Concession on the west side of what is now Thornton's Road. Eleanor, b. Ireland was a sister of James Nesbitt who settled at Thornton's Corners, E. Whitby Twp, Ontario and of John Nesbitt who settled in Cartwright Twp. Their sister, Sarah Nesbitt married a Joseph Wellwood. A niece of Eleanor's, Ellen Wellwood was living with William and Eleanor when William died. William and Eleanor retired to Lot 16, Conc 1, on 50 acres on the south side of Number 2 Highway, just across from Union Cemetery, Oshawa. After William's death, Eleanor remained there until her death. Her nephewk, William Nesbitt of Cartwright, spend considerable time when a boy with Eleanor, helping her with household chores. (a son of John's?) William and Eleanor were buried in St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Oshawa. They had no family. Sorry, that I have no further info on the Nesbitt brothers and perhaps you already know all this. Barb
