Can anyone tell me where Caughnawaga, Williamsburg Township is? Thomas Patrick, husband of Mary Ann Gormley died and I think it was there. Thanks.

Thanks for the info - since I don't see Caughnawaga on the map, was it a small town that no longer exists, or part of Williamsburg? The name sounds Indian. Do you happen to know what went on in that area? An ancestor of mine died in Caughnawaga. Thanks.

Hi Bonnie:-
Like a lot of places around here - I know there was a school and a cheese factory.
You might find something in the Books about Dundas Co. If you cannot get to these I have two of them and can look but it will have to be after Aug 12. We have a big genealogy reunion from the private web site Dundas Co.-- from Aug 5- Aug 12. There are 125 attending all doing research in Dundas. & maybe (Stormont & Glengarry).
To get on this site you have to be a cousin of someone already there. Who is your relative ? If they belong to any of the members already on the site maybe I could get you on --If you wish.

Let me know if you want me to look in the books-- because I will likely forget!!

Take care,
Patsy

Hi Patsy:
Thanks for your email - was Caughnawaga a little hamlet or village? Our relative Thomas Patrick who married Mary Ann Gormley died on May 26, 1929 at Caughnawaga, Williamsburg Township. Mary Ann Gormley's parents owned the Gormley House, a hotel, which I believe was in Morrisburg, although that's not certain. Thomas and Mary Ann lived in Brinston. I'm not familiar with Brinston either, although I would love to know about their lives there. I don't know if there are any Patricks or Gormleys in your group - although Richard Patrick, from Cardinal, is a relative. By the way, Thomas' youngest son, William Darcy was a cheesemaker. I'd love to know what Thomas was doing in Caughnawaga when he died...was it an Indian settlement?
Thanks, loads.

Hi Bonnie:-

I live just west of Brinston and have all my life!!!

Patrick and Gormley are not names familiar to me but I will see what I can do.
Brinston was another four corners hamlet. At one time it had four stores a postoffice blacksmith, bank ( in one of the stores), cheese factory and a few other small businesses.
There are still several businesses at the four corners.

Give me some time and I will get back to you.

Hi John, are your Markles related to any Brown families? I have a lot of Markle/Markel/Myracle/Miracle/Merckel families showing [per FTDNA] DNA results, that they are closely related to my Brown ancestors. By the number, names, and variety of different Markles, I'd say the Brown & Markle relationship goes back a long way, possibly even pre Rev. War. I believe some of my Brown ancestors were British soldiers & loyalists, as well as patriots during the Rev. War. I have reason to believe some of my Brown & Fisher ancestors were living in the Netherlands, early 1700's, before moving to America/the colonies.
