Hello Alice,
It looks like you have done considerable research in Mountain,Dundas and South Gower Twps. I am wondering if you have run across information on the David Brown(e) b. Ont. and his wife Jane b.Scotland that were on the 1880 census in Matilda Twp.? I believe these are the parents of my great-great grandmother, Mariah Browne, who married Charles Campbell in Mountian Twp. about 1847. After their marriage they moved to South Gower, Edwardsburg area where their children were born.
This is what is on the census:
David BROWN M Male English 79 Ont Farmer C. Methodist
Jane BROWN M Female Scottish 78 O <Ontario> C. Methodist
Alexander BROWN Male English 46 O <Ontario> C. Methodist
Jane A. BROWN Female English 35 O <Ontario> C. Methodist
Nathan BROWN Male English 33 O Ont Farmer C. Methodist
Census Place Matilda, Dundas, Ontario

Mariah was born in 1825 and Charles in 1820.
Mariah had a brother, William Brown, who was living in Warren, Marshall County, MN on the 1880 census.
Charles and Mariah moved to Tuscola County, Michigan in the early 1860's.
Their children were:
Jane A., Alex, Angus, Malcolm, Catherine, and Dugold (who died young).
A story has been carried down about Mariah's mother who was from a wealthy family in Scotland (royalty). Her maiden name may have been Howard. Her mother offered her an apron full of gold coins to stay in Scotland, but she either married, or was engaged to a man in Canada. I believe this was David Brown.
Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Colleen

I have an old obit of someone named Samantha Guernsey, she died in Mountain on July 28, 1890. She married Thomas Armstrong of Mountain. Buried at Inkerman Cemetery.
I'm not sure who her parents were. Her probable birthdate would be the 1830s.

Much thanks!

You've likely discovered this already, but Barnard Brown's parents were from Ireland. I don't know which part -- I've never had success continuing a line once hitting Ireland.
Father -- William Brown; Mother -- Mary. They likely came to Canada around 1825.
