Orangeville Banner, January 9, 1947 - Page 2 - MRS. P. J. MULLIGAN: Mrs. Jessie Mulligan, 70, a highly esteemed resident of this vicinity, was laid to rest the last day of the old year following High Mass of Requiem in St. John's Church, Dundalk. Temporary Interment was in the repository vault at Dundalk Cemetery until more clement weather permits burial beside her late husband, Patrick Mulligan, in the Catholic graveyard at Melancthon.
Born Jessie Thomson, near Grand Valley in East Luther, she was the daughter of Scotch immigrants. Her father had been a druggist in the Old Land but became a pioneer farmer in the district and raised a highly respected family, the descendants of which are numerous and favourably known throughout this region. Married to Pat. Mulligan two months before her sixteenth birthday, Mrs. Mulligan lived until a week before her death in Melancthon Twp., 4th Con., and, since 1935, mostly with her youngest son, Frank. Mr. Mulligan had died that year. Mrs. Mulligan had resided in Dundalk for two years, 1942-43.
A serious heart condition which threatened her life constantly the last few years failed to impair her good humored, friendly attitude toward people and affairs, and Mrs. Mulligan remained to the last the gracious motherly woman she had always been. Just a week before Christmas she went to her daughter Stella's home in Orangeville intending to spend the winter. A sudden and severe recurrence of her ailment forced her into the hospital there and on Dec. 28, consoled by the last rites of the Church, she passed away.
Many large floral displays and Mass cards were eloquent testimony to the high regard of relations and friends for this septuagenarian. Flowerbearers at her funeral were Messrs. Jack Carter, Bill Byers, Harold Oldfield and Ross Lyons.
Predeceased by her husband and a 12-year-old son, Ivan, Mrs. Mulligan leaves to mourn her going a brother John in Brantford, four sisters, Mrs. Mike Keating, Melancthon, Mrs. John Murray, Orangeville, Mrs. Matt. Pressick, Chesley, Mrs. Albert French, Weston, and her own immediate sorrowing family of four daughters and four sons, Frances (Mrs. Quinn, Toronto), John, Henry, James and Frank in Melancthon; Isabelle (Mrs. Dan Pickett), Proton, Stella (Mrs. Ed. Jacques), Orangeville, and Theresa (Mrs. Jack Beckner), Hopeville; also twenty-four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The Funeral High Mass was sung by the dead woman's Pastor, Dr. McKenna, who paid emphatic tribute to her sterling faith and unswerving practice of it. Pallbearers were six stalwart grandsons, Pat, Joe, Harold Jack and Albert, all sons of John Mulligan, and Johnny Pickett, son of her daughter in South Proton.
Floral tributes included: Pillow, from the Family; sprays from the girls of Jacques Bakery, Mr. and Mrs. Bert May, Mr. and Mrs. James Meek, Mr. and Mrs. Carm. Davison, all of Orangeville, Pleasant View Farm Forum, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Keating, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Broster, all of Melancthon, also spiritual tributes (Mass cards) from Mrs. Pat Mulhall, Mrs. John Pickett, Mrs. Katherine and Joe Rice, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gorman, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Ryan, Mr. and Mrs. Jas.
