Looking for any information regarding Neelis' (often spelled Nellis on Canadian Cenus). John Neelis and wife Rebecca Smith settled Mono Twp. about 1847 after emigrating from Ireland. They brought with them two daughters, Ann and Mary, then gave birth to 8 more children in Canada- Sarah, Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret, Joseph, Rosanna, James, John. It is possible that John and Rebecca's parents came with them - Joseph Neelis and Bridget Kenney; James Smith and Bridget Campbell. James Neelis is my grandfather. Will welcome any information that will help me narrow down the town they lived in and the Catholic Church they attended.

I FOUND YOUR INFORMATION INTERESTING BECAUSE SO MANY FIRST NAMES WERE OR ARE IN MY FAMILY. MY FATHER OF COURSE IS JOHN A NEELIS SR. HIS FATHER WAS JOHN NEELIS ALSO, BUT I BELIEVE HIS MIDDLE NAME WAS MATHEW. MY GRANDMOTHERS NAME WAS ANN, MY AUNTS NAME WAS MARY. HER SON'S NAME IS JOHN JOSEPH CORCORAN, WHO IS MY COUSIN. THERE SEEMS TO BE A BIG GAP IN FAMILY HISTORY. I KNOW SOME OF OUR RELATIVES WERE CORCORANS AND SCANLONS. MAYBE ITS JUST A COINCIDENCE THAT ALL THOSE NAMES CAME UP. MY FATHERS BROTHER NAME IS ROBERT NEELIS, AND MY FATHERS HALF BROTHER IS WILLIAM OR "BILL".

I can provide one clue for your quest. It would appear that your Bridget Kenney is buried at St. Cyprian's II Cemetery, Lot 25, 2nd conc. EHS Mono. This cemetery has been long abandoned. Alan and Mary Rayburn recorded eleven cemeteries in Mono Twp., and published the results in March 1991. They recorded her stone (Stone # 16) - "Bridget McCanny wife of Joseph Nelis died May 14, 1864; 85 y'rs. Native County Tyrone Ireland".

Apparently the graveyard was completely overgrown by the 1960s, so others may well have been buried there, but the stones have not survived. Also some of the stones were said to have been moved from St. Cyprian's I, an earlier church and mission.

I am no relationship what-so-ever, just interested in early Mono Twp. history, and though this worth passing on.

My ggggrandfather William McKelvey (McKelvie was also later changed to McKelvie when the family went to Scotland) had a daughter Jane McKelvey who married a John Nellis (not sure of spelling as it appears differently even in official family records)Jane had to our knowledge one sister Ann (also recorded as Mary Ann)and two brothers Robert McKelvey and James McKelvey. We know Jane had at least two children James and William, and we know that James later went to the states. We can find no records of the family now in Ireland where they came from in a wee place called Altahoney also known at Altaghoney its in the county of Londonderry many of the family also lived in Tyrone. I have searced death certs etc. they just seem to of vanished, I wonder if they could be a link to your Neelis what do you think? Regards Sharon

As of this time I have not found a Jane McKelvey in my family tree, but anything is possible. There is another family with the surname of Nellis that lived in Canada but not lf the same branch as mine.

I will keep you information available just in case.

Thank you for this share.

John, for whatever reason I am just now reading your post. We did move out of state in 2001 and changed my e-mail and Ancestry data but I'm still not sure why your post has just now became into my awareness.

As you said there does seem to be too many similar names for all this to be a coincidence. I certainly would be willing to exchange more information.

I don't have any information re: Corcoran or Scanlon family names.

My gr.grandfather John Neelis had a brother (among others, I'm sure) Joseph who married Mary Mullin. Other surnames are Moran and Miller.

I will pursue the name of Corcoran and Scanlon to determine if they shed a light in my family tree.

Thank you for this information.

I see I'm 7 years late to the party! I just discovered that my ancestors, Mary (Dugan?) and Andrew O'Neill are from Altahoney. O'Neill, Nellis, probably some distant relation there.
