Re: Family Search - Mary Henry Widdis
Hi Mike, The following obituary might help you a little. However, in all other records I've seen, she was born in Ireland, not Caledon. I also wonder if she was closer to 90 when she died - in the same range as her husband Thomas who was born 1832 according to his headstone.
In the 1871 Caledon Tp census she was 38, born Ireland In the 1881 Mono Tp census she was 48, born Ireland In the 1891 Mono Tp census she was 56, born Ireland. This would put her year of birth c1834.
Orangeville Banner/Sun, November 6, 1924: MRS. MARY WIDDIS At the remarkable age of 101 years Mrs. Mary Widdis, relict of the late Thomas Widdis of this town, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Scott of Brantford on Tuesday, the 28th ult. Deceased had resided in town until about 15 years ago, when she went to live with her daughter at Brantford. The late Mrs. Widdis was born in Caledon, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Henry, pioneer settlers. She spent most of her life in this district. Mrs. Widdis was of a kindly nature and those who knew her held her in the highest esteem. She was a life-long member of the Anglican church. A family of two sons and five daughters are left to mourn her death -- Mrs. Schott and Thos. A. Widdis, Brantford; Mrs. Ben Price and Mrs. Jas. Hammond of Toronto; Mrs. Henry Allen and Mrs. Geo. In the absence of Rev. J. W. McDonald, Rev. W. H. Hartley, of Shelburne, conducted the services at the house and grave. The pallbearers were Messrs. Norman, Ed. and Lorne Widdis and Bert, Fred and Elgin Hammond. The floral tributes included a wreath from Wm. Widdis and family; Brantford; a wreath from Mrs. Richards and family, and grandchildren, a wreath from St. Jude's Church Ladies Guild, Brantford, and sprays from Mrs. Cummings, Mrs. William Harkness, Mr. and Mrs. Nolan and Mr. and Mrs. Lemon, all of Brantford.

Re: Family Search - Jane Harkies Widdis
Orangeville Banner, March 11 1920, page 7: MRS. WILLIAM WIDDIS Mrs. Jane Widdis, widow of the late William Widdis, died very suddenly at her home on lot 21, end line, east, Caledon, on Tuesday of last week. Deceased had been ill for two weeks with the flu, but was doing nicely and her physician felt that her recovery was assured. The cause of her unexpected demise was heart collapse. The late Mrs. Widdis was 61 years and 10 months of age and was a daughter of the late George Harkies, Mono Mills, where she was born and spent her girlhood. She had lived in Caledon since her marriage nearly forty years ago and enjoyed the goodwill and respect of a wide circle of friends and neighbors in that township. Her husband died very suddenly on June 15th last. The loss of both parents within such a short period of time has created widespread sympathy for the bereaved family of five sons and two daughters. These are Lorne, of Cleveland, Ohio, Fred, living in Brantford, Edward, of Cataract, Mrs. Arch. McArthurs, Cataract, Mrs. Clinton Thompson, Centre Road, Caledon, and Cecil and Norman at home. Deceased was a sister of Mrs. Frank Marshall, West Broadway. There was a large attendance of the friends and neighbors at the funeral, which was held from her late residence to the Forest Lawn Cemetery last Thursday afternoon. Rev. Jenkins Burkholder, of Caledon, was the officiating minister and four sons, Fred, Edward, Cecil and Norman, and the two sons-in-law were the pallbearers.
Orangeville Sun, March 4, 1920: MRS. JANE WIDDIS On Tuesday, Mrs. Jane Widdis of lot 21, 2nd line, east, Caledon, passed away, aged 61 years and 10 months. She was the widow of the late William Widdis, who died last August. A short time ago Mrs. Widdis took sick with influenza and gradually grew worse until relieved by death. Three sisters and three brothers survive, Mrs. J. Kearns, Mrs. F. Marshall, Mrs. John Gartley and John Harkies of Orangeville, William Harkies of Brantford and Charles Harkies. The funeral will take place to the Forest Lawn Cemetery this afternoon.

Hi Michael, I am also interested in the Harkies line- my ggrandmother Lavina apparently was the sister of your Jane. Lavina was married to Frank Marshall of Orangeville. Would love to hear any info you might have found on the family. Their parents were George and Mary, but I don't know anything about them- Please write if you can, Sandy

Hi Michael - I also am researching the Widdis family - my g-grandmother was William's sister Margaret Jane who married Henry Allen of Mono. I have some info on the family, and agree with Sheila Davidson that Mary (Henry) Widdis was more likely born in 1834. The family home was burned, and the Bible with all the pertinent dates in it were lost. It was only later in her life that some of her family added 10 years to her age to put her over 100 mark. Mind you, Margaret Jane lived to be 90, as did her daughter. At any rate, if you would like specific information about the Widdis family in Caledon and Mono townships near Orangeville, Ontario, I will be glad to assist.
