Classification: Immigration
Surnames: Holland, Anderson, Mc Courtney
My maternal grandfather was flying home one foggy night in 1922 when his plane stuck a tree and tragically he was killed leaving his wife Ethel Alice nee Peake and my infant mother Esme Hubert Holland who subsequently returned to Ethel's parents in the UK.

Hubert's father was William Hubert Holland of Ottawa and his mother was Elise Mary nee Anderson. I would like further info on the Hollands and also on Elise Mary Anderson.I am wondering if she is the Elise Mary born 1870 to Mary Anderson and William Mc Cartney in Knocknagoney County Down N Ireland?

can any one help?

Thank you

From a local newspaper:

Orangeville Sun, April 27, 1922, AVIATOR BURNS TO DEATH: Plane Strikes Treetop and Machine Crashed to Ground – Terrible Mishap Near Waldemar. A terrible airplane accident took place near Waldemar about 6 o’clock Sunday evening, which resulted in the death of Capt. Hubert Holland, M.C., of Ottawa. He was burned to death when the machine took fire. Capt. Holland was a son of W. H. Holland, 307 St. George street, Toronto. Mrs. T. C. Keefer, of Ottawa, is a sister, and Major Gerald A. Holland, a brother. He was married and had one daughter a few months ago.
Flying Officer E. C. Owens, inspector of Photographs Branch, Air Board, Ottawa, who was accompanying Capt. Holland, was severely shaken up.
Struck Branch of Tree
Flight Capt. Holland, who was in charge of the Ottawa aerodrome, left the Federal capital on Friday with his companion and flew to Camp Borden in a two-seater D. H.-Four machine with a Rolls-Royce engine. Between 3 and 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon they left Camp Borden for London, where they purposed taking pictures for the government. They reached Waldemar about seven o’clock when the water pump stopped working and the airmen descended to have it repaired. It was their intention to return to Camp Borden after having been delayed by the accident. On the take-off the plane hit the bough of a tree about sixty feet in the air, took a nose dive and crashed to the ground.
Flight Capt. Holland became entangled in the wreckage, which immediately caught fire. Flying Lieut. Owen, although painfully injured, endeavoured to extract the body of his companion from the burning debris, but was unsuccessful and the unfortunate officer was burned to death. The disaster was witnessed by some residents who rushed to the scene, but by the time Capt. Holland had succumbed to his injuries. His body was removed to the undertaker’s and Dr. Campbell, of Grand Valley, who had been summoned, dressed the wounds of Officer Owen, who had been taken to the home of Mr. Geo. Gamble, at Waldemar.
The plane which was fitted with wireless, is a total wreck.
Dr. Berwick, corner, viewed the scene, and decided that it was unnecessary to hold an inquest.

He was an active militia officer and served with the 2n Divisional Cyclist Corps, Canadian Reserve Cyclist Company, in 1915. He enlisted at 19 years of age, during the First World War, and was appointed to commissioned rank. He served in Shorncliffe, England with the Cyclist Corps Depot, Canadian Expeditionary Force; was seconded to the Royal Air Force 1917-1919. After studying at the RAF school of Aeronautics at Reading, he served as a Flying Officer with the Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force in France 1917 and in England. On Sept 19, 1918 Lieutenant Holland was awarded the Military Cross 16/9/18 “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when working with artillery in carrying out six successful shoots whereby many enemy gun pits were destroyed and explosions caused. In one case he descended to 100 ft. and found all pits totally destroyed. He carried out a good low reconnaissance of two suspected hostile batteries and also obtained other very useful information.” After taking his release in 1919, he worked at the Bank of Montreal in London, England. He and his wife Edna Alice returned to Canada, where he served with the Canadian Air Board 1922. He died on April 23, 1922 in Amaranth Township, Ontario at 26 years of age.
