Classification: Query
Surnames: DOWNS, MCCORMICK, MCGRAW
Mary MCCORMICK, born between 1811-1826 in Ireland, was the daughter of John MCCORMICK & Mary / Margaret RYAN. Mary’s first husband was a Mr. DOWNS, who died between 1856-1858 and who fathered two children, John DOWNS (b.1855) & Mary DOWNS (b.1856), both born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Mary (MCCORMICK) DOWNS then married on 1 Nov 1858 in Saint Patrick’s in Ottawa to Michael MCGRAW, born between 1810-1821 in Ireland, was the son of John MCGRAW & Bridget HOGAN. Mary’s third child was Thomas MCGRAW (b.1864), born in Canada or Pennsylvania.
Michael, Mary, and the two DOWNS children are shown in the 1861 Census in Ottawa, Carleton, Canada West along with a widowed Ellen MCCORMICK (b.1805 - Ireland), some relation to Mary apparently through marriage. The following census taken in 1870 in Corry Ward 2, Erie, Pennsylvania lists Michael & Mary MCGRAW, John & Mary DOWNS, & Thomas MCGRAW. A future obituary for John DOWNS alludes to a half sister MCGRAW residing in Rochester, Monroe, NY, however there’s no solid proof of her existence.
Mary MCCORMICK & Mr. DOWNS either emigrated separately & married in Canada or married in Ireland & emigrated together, since neither is listed in the 1851 Canadian census, it’s difficult to tell, two children were born & Mr. DOWNS died all before 1858. I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who can fill in the blanks on Mr. DOWNS. Thank You.
