I need help finding the family history in Canada of my ggrandfather, Patrick McElroy. Patrick married Catherine Sheridan of Fitzroy in May of 1880 in Fitzroy. I have records of their marriage. The records list Patrick’s parents as Hugh McElroy and Catherine Kelly. From what I have learned, they were both b in Ireland around 1820, although I don’ t know where in Ireland. Some of the research I have done shows a Hugh and Catherine in New York, USA, but unsure if that is the same family. Patrick’s birth was listed as being in Lachine Canada in 1846. Patrick’s siblings were:
William, b abt 1845, unknown exactly where but I suspect Canada
Margaret Ann, b abt 1848 unknown exactly where but I suspect Canada
Alice, b April 1856 in Fitzroy, d April 22, 1884, in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. She married Samuel Vollin (Volin) Sept 25, 1882 in Carleton according to marriage record.
James Joseph, b abt 1859, unknown exactly where but I suspect Canada. James J immigrated to Wisconsin, USA. He married Augusta Olson in 1889 in WI. I have the obit for him, and searching for the date in Wisconsin.
I believe William may have married Catherine Gleason b July 2, 1862, in Canada. Her parents were James Gleason and Mary O’Keefe, per the 1881 Canada census. I have not found a marriage record for either but a William F. McElroy is listed as the husband of Catherine Gleason on a death certificate for Catherine McElroy who d October 20, 1897 in Waushara County, Wisconsin, USA. Catherine’s siblings were:
Marie Honora, b 1863, in Quebec
Bridget, b 1866 in Quebec. She married Patrick Sheehan, b 1866 in Ireland.
Julia T., b 1867 in Ramsay Township, d 15 Jul 1926 in Lambton, Ontario, married in 1898 in Lanark, James Devine, b abt 1861 in Fitzroy, son of Andrew Devine, b January 13, 1831 in Ontario, and Mary Ann Lunney, b 18 APR 1841 in Huntley, Ontario.
I believe there is a connection between the McElroy and Gleason family through William. I am in most need of info on the McElroy’s. I have looked through ‘Bytown or Bust’ but do not find a reference to the McElroy’s. I also know that many Canadian born McElroy’s came to Wisconsin, so I am searching there as well. Any help is appreciated.
