I am searching for information regarding Jane Lewis (my gggrandmother) who was born in Ontario, Canada around 1837. She married William Sturgeon (date unknown). She died around 1924 in Kincardine, Ontario. Jane and William had 14 children: Mary Jane, Robert, William, Ann, James, Elizabeth, Martha, Margaret, John, George, Andrew, Milligan, Lillian, and Samuel. Jane Lewis's ethnic origin is Irish. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the Ontario Cemetry Finding Aid, http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa. It has index references for both William Sturgeon and Jane Lewis in Kincardine Cemetry.

If you contact the contribuing organization there may be more information available.

good luck

Thank you for the tip. I did a search and she is listed in the index along with her husband. Do you know what kind of information the OCFA has? I am really trying to find out exactly where Jane was born, who her parents were, and exactly when and where she and William were married.

Thanks again,
Tammy

Hi Eileen,

Yes I have come across William and Jane in the 1881 census in the LDS IGI site. Thank you for the marriage listings. All the ones you listed are in my family tree. Toils Tears Triumph is a great book and I have extracted alot of information from this book. Thank you for the links. I will contact the Bruce County Genweb site for more information.

I guess the information you can receive will vary.

In my case, I was very lucky. After finding my great grandfather and severel other ancestors in Queen HIll Cemetery in Bruce County, I contacted Bruce County Genealogical Society, http://www.rootsweb.com/~onbcgs/.

They sent my the inscription from the gravestones. The inscription on my g great grandmother's grave read:

McLennan Jane, died Dec 1, 1884 aged 84 yrs 2 mos. wife of the late Roderick McLennan, Parish school master of Kintail, Ross-shire, Scotland.

Not everyone may be so lucky.

In addition to the inscriptions, the BCGS also sent me my great grandfather obituary and the name and address of a family member who was also researching McLennans.

Hi Tammy,

I don't know if you'll be as lucky as I was.

I contacted the Bruce County Genealogical Society, http://www.rootsweb.com/~onbcgs. I requested the inscriptions from the gravestones of McLennans buried in Queen Hill Cemetery and any other McLennan family information they might have.

Not only did I receive the cemetery inscriptions, but they were also able to send me my great grandfather's obituary and the name and address of another family member who was doing research on McLennans.

Luckily my great grandmother's gravestone inscription included the day she died, her age at death and the she was the widow of Roderick McLennan, the Parish school master of Kintail, Ross-shire, Scotland.

Good luck,

Linda

I just discovered this post and notice it is quite old (almost 10 years!). Did you have any luck finding what you were looking for? Jane Lewis is in my tree as well (my 2nd ggmother). I have traced her family quite a way back and can help if you still need this info.

Hi The OCFA - has transcribed the information - found on the headstones - Don't know if they actually have access to the Cemetery Records -

Contact the Cemetery Office - they may have further information - They will know the name of the Funeral Home / Undertaker - in charge of arrangements - They may have taken information for the Registration of Death - which will include the date and place of birth of the deceased - Names of Parents - including maiden name of the mother - Place of birth of parents - As known to the Informant [ some do not have / remember the information ]

Contact Vital Statistics - to obtain the Registration of Death / Long Form Death Certificate

Hi Laurie,

I just came across your posting. Yes I did find some information regarding Jane Lewis since that original post 10 years ago. I discovered that she was the daughter of William Lewis and Eliza Stanley. Eliza Stanley was the daughter of Edward Stanley and Mary (last name unknown). I believe they were originally from Tipperary. I also have a copy of Edward Stanley's will in which he mentions the names of all his surviving children. William Lewis' parents remain a mystery to me as do Edward Stanley's parents as well as Mary's surname.

I appreciate very much that you replied to my posting after all these years. I would love to exchange information with you!

Take care and hope to hear back from you. Merry Christmas!!
