Thank you for your query. Mount Pleasant and the Grand River area were part of the Niagara District during the War of 1812. The men were serving in a Lincoln County militia. I have no records for Eddy men having served in the 5th Lincoln. However they may have served in other militia regiments. Unfortunately I do not know what the political structure of Brant County was at that time. If I knew which district they were living in I could possibly tell you which militia they served in. I have confirmed that no Eddy men made a war claim after the war. Did your Eddy men make land petitions before or after the war?

My research was to link the James Galloway with a wife named Euphemia to the James Galloway whose wife was named Mary Ann Stewart Hart. The areas searched were Grimsby Tsp. Lincoln Cty. & Saltfleet Tsp. Wentworth Cty.

The records searched were........................Lincoln-Wellend County Marriages 1858-1869

Wentworth County Marriages 1858-1869

Gore District Marriage Records 1837-1857

Niagara District Vital Records 1795-1856

Surrogate court records for probates relating to Galloway

in Lincoln & Wentworth

The results were negative.

James Galloway Jr is first noted on a land reference Lot # 11 Gore A between 7th & 8th Concessions in 1854 with a Bargain & Sale for the land from Abraham Morse. This was for the west half of the property which was 50 acres. James Galloway Jr lived in Saltfleet Township & was a Waggon Maker.

He paid Abraham Morse 100 Pounds for the land.

There is a Bargain & Sale 31 March 1855 when James Jr sold the west half of the property to James Sr. James Jr still lives in Saltfleet & the document says "James Galloway of the township of Saltfleet in the County of Wentworth & Province of Ontario senior Waggon Maker" so James Senior must have been living in Saltfleet at the time. James sold his father the land for the same price he purchased it for a year earlier.

There is another Bargain & Sale on the 15 October 1855 & it is for James Galloway et eux (his wife) & Matthew Merritt. James Galloway & his wife Mary Ann Galloway both of Saltfleet sold the west half 50 acres for 325 Pounds. This transaction would suggest that James & Mary Ann were married by the 15 Oct. 1855. Since the land transactions are between James Sr & James Jr then this would suggest that James Jr is an adult & a son from the marriage with Euphemia.

On the 07 October 1862 the 50 acres appears to be back in the Galloway family. James Galloway Sr & his wife Mary Ann are now living in Grimsby Township. James Jr is living in Strathroy Township Middlesex County. James the elder is a wheelwright & James the younger is a joiner. James Sr seems to have paid James Jr 1000 Pounds for the 50 acres.

This record suggests that James Senior was alive as of 7 October 1862.

There is a Life Lease dated 28 December 1869 & registered 26 March 1870. It is between James Galloway & Mary Ann Galloway. James Sr must have passed away sometime around 1869. James Galloway is living in Strathroy Township & is a joiner. He is still referred to as the younger. Mary Ann Galloway is living in Grimsby Township & is referred to as the widow of James Galloway, wheelwright the elder. Mary Ann pays James Jr 2000 dollars & James Jr grants her the lease of the land to use during her natural life.

Six Nations you can contact their membership office for assistance. You may also be able to order files from National Archives. You should have all information you have when you contact Six Nations membership office - your parents, grandparents, etc. and their band name and number if known.

I believe there are two sets of "Reather" families in the US today. The English ones, without a doubt, immigrated to America from County Durham, England, in the 1880 time period. Some stayed, some went home. I haven't made any distant connection to any German Reathers and I firmly believe the German name has been morphed, like many names, through misspellings and recordings, down the generations from the original German form that sounds similar.
I could absolutely be mistaken, however, years of searching has not led my Reather tree branches to Canada or Germany.

George Chrysler died at Hamilton General Hospital, on Friday, April 12, 1963 and he is buried on the Six Nations Reservation, Garlow Line Cemetery according to his obit.

He may have an unmarked grave because he isn't found on this list.

This is a photo of Catharine Mike. Maiden name is unknown. She was the widow of John Mike/Myke/Groat.

This photograph of Ol' Granny Mike, as she was known came from the diaries of Arminia (nee Hager) Livingston. Armina was the daughter of Charles and Mary Jane Hager from Hagersville. Granny Mike tended the children of the Hager family for many years. Armina's diary states that dear old Granny Mike died September 30, 1877. This photograph was taken about 1856 and she is about 50 years old. (Some of this info and photo was borrowed :)

Birth about 1804 Ontario, Canada. She was a full blooded Mississauga of the Credit Indian.

Residence 1852 Age: 48 Brant County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada. Caty Mike. Living on the New Credit Reserve.

Thanks for the suggestions. As to your first post. You may be right I might just have to bite the bullet and gamble that the wedding announcement will have more information than a one line announcement stating that they were married.

As to your second I have contacted Mr. Coe and unfortunately he cannot remember where he found this information. The issue that I have had in the past is that the Hannah that married Ralph Long only had one child (a girl) as far as I have been able to find.

The Brantford Public Library site has a searchable birth/ marriage/death index of names in Brantford newspapers. I was unable to find a death for Peter Ball Long but there his marriage was there: Long, Peter B. Marriage Nov 14, 1854 BCE, P. 3 Laird, Marion (Wife).
This is their fee policy :
The $25.00 fee must be received along with a written request before any research is done.
This fee includes 1-20 copies as well as research time and postage.
When requesting birth, marriage, and death notices from the Expositor Index, the charge is per page copied not per name.
We only accept payment by cheque or money order (payable to the Brantford Public Library).
Birth, marriage, and death notices can be sent by regular mail or scanned and emailed once payment has been received.

Perhaps you can search the index for other names to make it worth the fee or you could post on this board a specific request for someone who might volunteer to obtain a copy of the marriage notice for you. Hopefully it will have some unknown info for you. Searching by last name also brings up the births of his children.

I think that William Ball probably is a relative. I believe that Peter's mother was a Ball I'm just not sure which one. I also knew that Herbert Biggar was Marion's second husband.

I have seen the 1851 census but there aren't any parents listed the oldest individual is Hannah but I don't think she is a parent. My guess is either a sibling or a cousin. There is also a Catherine M Ball listed right below them. A cousin maybe?

Thanks for the Cemetery Info. I followed your links, and checked Interment.net and cemetery.com but neither have listings for Peter but they do have listings for his children. Maybe its a family monument?

On their marriage registration,such as it is, says they were married by a Willam S Ball.
Could he be a relative? It doesn't say what church he is affiliated with.
You already likely have this but Marion Long remarried in 1874 to Herbert Biggar.

Hi all I was hoping someone might come across this and maybe point me in the right direction.

I am looking for information about my 3x great grandfather's parent I know very little about them.

My 3x great grandfather's name was Peter Ball Long b. 1826 in Ontario d. before 1871. He lived in Brant for a number of years. He was one of the founders of the Brant County Law Library Association. He was a Town Councillor, and even was a partner in the Law office of Wood and Long.

But even with all this info about him I have been unable to find out when he died or where. He married 24 Oct 1854 to Marian Laird but their wedding registry doesn't have any info about his family.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated,

The Margaret Mike/Groat that married Richard Lewis in my post above is the daughter of John Mike/Groat and Catherine a Native woman.

This is the Mike/Myke/Groat family that were "sheriffed off" of the Mississaugas of the New Credit Indian Reservation because they were considered squatters and non-members even though their mother was a member of this band all of her life. They were removed because their father was Mulatto or Negro and not a native.

John Groat or Mike was referred to as a coloured person-negro on 1852 Canadian census Age: 50 Brant County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada he died Bet. 1852–1861 in Ontario, Canada

John and Catherine Groat/Mike had the following children

William Mike/Groat born abt. 1824 had a spouse named Adeline

Margaret Mike/Groat born abt. 1827 married Richard Lewis

Peter Mike/Groat born abt. 1828 lived common law with Hannah "Ann" Claus (they had atleast 7 children Catherine E, Charles Henry, Mary Jane, William Leroy, Alexander, Albert Anthony and David Andrew)

Wait a second, Margaret Groat is named as a daughter of Michael Groat of Nelson township in his 1846 will, she is the sister of William of Guelph who died in the Wellington County House of Industry in 1900. She had a sister Hannah, and a sister Jemime unless Michael's will use of no comma between Jemime Margaret and Hannah denotes two daughters or three. She also had a brother named Peter. The mother's name isn't mentioned so she was probably dead. Michael Groat left his farm to his grandson James Chrysler.

Catherine Groat was a full blooded Mississauga born on the Credit River, her husband John was negro, probably mixed race, and probably the son of Michael Grote of the 1794 free negro petition, he himself may have been mixed race.

I do not think this is the Sarah you are looking for. This Sarah McLean had one child a daughter named Betsy McLean that married a Thomas Wood.
