Need assistance locating information on my Great Uncle Earl Joseph Lake and his family. Earl was born 24 Sept 1884 in Natural Bridge, Jefferson Co., New York. He is found in the 1870, 80 and 1900 US Census. Earl left home sometime between 1900 and 1915 for most of his immediate families did not know what happened to him.

He wrote his mother and sister Merle only occasionally, the last time anyone had heard from was in the 1950’s. At that time he was asking his sister for his birth records so that he could apply for Social Security type support in Canada.

In the last letter Earl told his sister that he was having his grand-daughter write for him due to the crippling effects of arthritis in his hands. At some point he has told his sister that he had married an Indian woman, and had a family.

Earl’s sister died in 1972 any connection to him or where in Canada he might have been died with her.

In 2007 with the help of some people on message boards he was located and I obtained his marriage Record which identifies Earl and his wife Suzanna Potowissian of White River Algoma Co., Ontario Canada. Subsequent research has located his baptismal record in the Roman Catholic Church. Several other records found in the “Drouin” collection on Ancestry.com have identified their children:

Marc Mathias Lake 1915-1961
Agnes Lake Duplassie 1917-
Joseph Leonard Herby Lake 1919
Marguerite Lake 1920-1923
Beatrice Lake Deschamp
Marie Clara Lake Halverson 1924-
Helene Suzanne Lake 1926
Almire Joseph Lake 1928
Walter Joseph Lake 1931

Earl died in 1966 and his wife Suzanne in 1964 both are believed buried in the “Indian Cemetery” in White River Algoma Co., Ontario Canada along with their son Marc and daughter Marguerite or Margret.

What I am looking for primarily are people researching or related to these people any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi: I was searching the internet for someone I once knew in White River (I grew up there)....and your query came up.

I do remember an Earl Lake........but, not much about him, unfortunately. I also remember an
Elmer and Leonard Lake, I think they were brothers....who lived in the west end of town.......I think Elmer worked for the Lands and Forests as a fire tire ranger, and I'm not sure if Leonard did or not? Unfortunately my Mom passed away a hear and a half ago, because she would have known them well of course.

I know they both trapped.....but, didn't know any of their children. I think Leonard 'adopted' a child from a family in the Native Reserve west of town at some point in time, but that was sometimes the custom I think....that if one of the native families didn't have the resources to provide for a child's care, one of the other members of the band would adopt and care for the children. (but please remember, I was pretty young at the time I recall so maybe it was just something that I heard?)

I do recall Elmer having a great sense of humour - always seemed to be happy......

Anyway, not sure if that is much help.............other than I knew Leonard and Elmer, and heard of Earl, but, just don't remember much more than what I've provided.

Take care..
