Well, this is interesting...Gunder Udgarden, born in Norway in 1828 to Haagen Torstensen and Olia/Sigri Jacobsdatter, married Harriet Turner in Moose Factory on April 29th 1864. They had 9 children - including Mary who changed her last name to Gardiner (she is my grandmother) and married Peter Closs in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario 1907. I think the Mary you are speaking of is the daughter of Gunder's son, Augustine (Gus, Gustavus His name at baptism was Augustine)who married Emilie Moar. Some of the children of Harriet and Gunder changed their last names to Gunner and some to Gardiner. The Gunners seemed to have remained in the north while the Gardiner branches headed south. And yes, Augustine/Gustavus was a sailor according to Hudson Bay Company Records. Here is that info:
1884 - 1888 Apprentice at Moose District
1888 - 1889 App. Slooper at Moose District
1889 - 1891 Slooper at Moose River
1891 - 1892 Slooper at Moose Factory Post
1892 - 1895 Slooper at Moose District
1908 June 1 Retired
My great grandfather, Gunder, also Gustavus's father, was a cook for HBC and arrived in Moose Factory from Norway somewhere around 1858. I have more info on his birth etc and service with the HBC if you are interested. I would love to connect via email and get corrections/additions to the family tree I have for Udgarden. Happy to share as well....Many unknowns in my tree regarding the Gunner branches....have some on Louttit etc. I am green with envy that you are going to get to meet the Cree ancestors!! We so hope to make a trip to Moosonee/Moose Factory after I retire. My email is
