Looking for a birth record form 1944
I am looking for a birth record of my father. Apparently he was born in Yarmouth, NS on December 7, 1944. His name was Michael Albert Gariepy. His parents might have been Margaret and Michel Gariepy.
Any help would be great.

Records of births in Nova Scotia after 1913 remain under the control of Vital Statistics, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. You will have to apply through them for a birth certificate. You should be able to find them easily through Google.

Oh my god! That must be it! That is my dad for sure! Thank you so much! I need to find more information now!

Re: Looking for a birth record form 1944
I just found that posting and it looks like it was made by Sharon's daughter, which would be my cousin. I tried the email twice but it returned as failure. The posting was almost 20 years ago. I wish I could find her......

Re: Looking for a birth record form 1944
A Yarmouth newspaper (Yarmouth Herald?) published a birth announcement in the 12 Dec. 1944 issue, page 2. The index identifes the child only as a son, born on 7 Dec. 1944, to Warrant Officer Marcel Gariepy.
Either the Yarmouth County Museum Archives or the Tusket Archives would probably do a look-up for you.

Wow! That is great! How did you find that? I was told my grandfather was in the Military but I haven't been able to find any records on it. Warrent Officer!

Re: Looking for a birth record form 1944
The Yarmouth County Historical Society has been producing a genealogically-oriented index, in ten-year increments, to all the surviving Yarmouth County newspapers from 1823 to 1960. I have the complete set (I was born in Yarmouth and grew up in that area, as did almost all my ancestors since the founding of the town in 1761, so I use it a LOT.)
So, when I saw your query, I pulled out the 1940-1949 index (which was just released this year) and looked up the name. And there it was.
I should add a caution that "Warrent Officer" is my interpretation; in the index he is listed as "Gariepy, W/O Marcel."
I have never seen the surname "Gariepy" in Yarmouth records before. WWII was raging at that time; it seems extremely likely that Marcel, being military, was transferred to Yarmouth from another part of Canada. And then probably transferred elsewhere a few years later.
Good luck!
