Hi..I meant to write when this post first came out. I do Morehouse research and would like to get the Nova Scotia Morehouse aspect of your family sorted out. Can you tell me a little more from your records, any dates, spouses, etc. I have many Williams as well as William Henry's in my files but no Gaytons or Wm. Avard's. (Although Avard was not an uncommon name in the mid 1600's in the area.) Three Morehouse brothers came to SW Nova Scotia in about 1783-84 and a fourth to New Brunswick. I work primarily on the three in Nova Scotia.

Thanks, Carol

Hi Becky,

This is Jon Campbell. I wrote you a couple of years ago in reply to your post seeking info about Ansel Crowell Smith and his son John Osbourne Smith. I recently joined Ancestry.com and did not know that you had replied until I found this thread again a few weeks ago. Anyway, I have been able to glean some more info.

As you indicated, Ansel was married three times, but the names of his wives that I have come across are slightly different from what you indicated. He was married to Esther Newell sometime apparently in 1838, who died prior to 1859. He then married Mary Anna Catharina Brandt in 1859 and who died prior to 1864. He then married Dorcas Hopkins April 10, 1864, who lived until 1917.

His son John Obourne Smith was also married three times, To Jeanette (or Janet) Brown prior to 1873, to Ruth Crowell Newell Dec 8, 1874 and to my particular ancestor, Angeline Gayton on 15 November, 1882.

I do have other info as well and have researched back to a John Smith and wife Bethiah Snow who were both born in the 1670's. If you would like, I can put you on my share list too. Just let me know.

There are many, many different ways that the surname, Diefendorf, is spelled. I would be most cautious about any posting of this family. In addition, there is a book compiled by Col. Ola W. Bell, 1932, entitled "The Devendorf Family". In this book, he states that the family of George J. Diefendorf has been very hard to trace. As I have worked on this family, my ancestors, I found it is not much easier.
As I mentioned, there is at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, a book which is labeled the Esler/Diefendorf Bible. It refers to the marker which was placed at the gravesite of George J. Diefendorf in Montgomery County. Last year I had a researcher locate the stone marker and send me a photo.
There is a man named Gerald (Jerry) Viste who contacted me in about 2003/2004 about Catherine. I think he lived in Wisconsin at the time. He had been researching Catherine because she is an ancestor of his wife.
He is a very careful and diligent researcher. You might google his name. Hopefully he is still around. Like many of us the years are catching up.
Winifred in Houston

Thanks for the info. I searched for Diefendorf on Ancestry and found what I think is your family. The owner puts Catherine as the first child in the family. But then, who knows for sure. Certainly, Catherine appears as a popular name throughout. Wouldn't it be great to discover a family Bible? Also, she would be the second in the family to become, in her case by marriage, a Loyalist.

I will definitely keep looking for any other hints while storing this info with Catherine. Thanks so much.

Robin

I see your post was 13 years ago and imagine you may have learned a lot more since then. Capt Nathaniel Powell was my great-great-great grandfather. He and his wife Kit Cannon have both been a source of particular fascination for many years. They settled eventually in the Boat Harbour - Powell Point - Little Harbour area, Pictou Co., where Capt Powell became the first harbour pilot in Pictou, a profession followed by several of his sons. They also built ships. The youngest child, daughter Catherine (b. 1805), married John Forbes of Little Harbour, from whom I am descended. I have a considerable amount of information on Capt Nathaniel Powell from 1782 on but have been singularly unsuccessful as yet in tracing his naval career or finding reliable documentary evidence for his origins in Wales. I would be more than happy to share my information, some of which was originally gathered by my father. If you are still interested or have additional information, I would very much like to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Don Forbes
Dartmouth NS
dlforbes@mun.ca

The children of George Diefendorf, b. 1729 in Switzerland, are believed to be John Hendree (my ancestor), prob b 1754, Elizabeth, b 1756 (married a George W. Garlock), George, b. abt 1758,(if he is the George found in NYC records and who died in 1732 age 74), Jacob, b. 1760, who is supposed to have married a Catherine Hess. Where Catherine falls in this family is unknown, but she may well be the youngest, and possibly born after Jacob. This puts her in her early 20s in 1783.

Win in Houston

Thank you so much for your reply. The dates are a bit confusing as it makes Catherine rather old to start a family in 1783. I would be very interested in more information. I have found no background info on Catherine before yours. I,like many other searchers, have had my ear to the ground to gather this sort of family history. I would definitely appreciate anything you have found.
Thnks again,
Seabird

A followup on previous message. The Catherine mentioned in the prayer book is said to have married and gone to Nova Scotia. Her grandfather, Johannes Diefendorf, died in 1791 in Montgomery Co., NY. Her grandmother was named Elizabeth Keller. I have not found any marriage record for her father, George. There are many postings in family trees that name her mother as a Catherine Hendree. I have searched and searched for evidence to support this and come up empty.

Be glad to furnish more info if you desire.

The supposed father of Catherine Diefendorf Boole is listed as being baptised in Basel, SW ca 1729. They likely left about 1743 (this is from memory).

A prayer book at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania has notations made in the 1840s relating to a Catherine and her family. I am a descendant of a John Hendree Diefendorf, later known as John D. Hendree, my 3X gr grandfather.

Win in Houston, TX

I'm quite certain there isn't a connection, however I hope
I'm proven wrong someday. You will find a lot of info on the Lunenburg Co. Turners in Mr Shankles webpages.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~downeast/1...
which is in the Personel Pages of the Lunenburg Genweb site.
There are other Personel pages there by others and one site by Kenneth Paulsen has info on the Salsman folks.
The parents of our James Turner(b1816)and John Frances Turner(b1818)were William Turner(b1779-d June20-1857)and
Elizabeth Turner(b1773-d Oct.12-1859). Both of their deaths are written in the Liverpool Transcript (on line at NS Archives). The article says William was formerly from Shelburne Co.. He and Elizabeth must have moved to Liverpool just before the 1838 Queens Census because they are listed in it.
Thanks Monica, I put some of this info in thinking it may be useful to some of the Shelburne Turners doing research in the future.

Hi Monica, In your first posting you say your looking for the Turner line from Shelburne. Yet I see William Turner and Barbara Salsman were married in Lunenburg Co in 1818 and I don't see any connection of he or his children to the Shelburne Turners, namely James(born approx 1818) and Ann Turner. My GG granfather John Francis Turner is a brother to James and settled in Western Head, Queens Co. along with his father William Turner.

Can you confirm if you still believe your Turner line had any connection to the Shelburne Turners?? I am still looking for two possible brothers of James and John Francis Turner.
Thanks

She is Andrew sister--is this who you meant by Catherine Faye in your note? It does not however list who Jacob Slate parents where at this time. This is according to the Genealogical tree that I had done by the Shelburne Genealogical Society in 2005.

It seems to reason that Slate and Slater maybe the same, Bower and Bowers and Swain and Swaine plus at times Goulden is also spelt Goulding. Can get confusing at times.

Martin Slate b 1795 is too young to be Jacob father so maybe he is Jacob brother and there is a Martin Slate Sr who in turn would be their father? Seems noone had an answer to that one.
Thanks for the info. Take care Jean

Didn't get to look into the Slate line while I was there (too much to do and see and too little time) but maybe next trip. My Mom and step dad want to move back there next year so I might be doing a lot more visiting. As to the Slates, what I have on Jacob's family is mostly speculative, based on clues of various sources. From "A History of Barrington" we learn that Frederick arrived from LeHave about 1800 with a son Martin who was already married, an un-named daughter who married a --- Goulding settler and who later returned to LeHave and a Barbara who was Elam Thomas's first wife in 1809 (his second was Martin's daughter Catherine). Another daughter is mentioned on pg 450 as marrying Peter Conk (family trees show her to be Mary Ann mother of Rebecca Slate Conk wife of Andrew Faye (brother of our Catherine Fay)). Confused yet?

Ok, now here is where I speculate... I found a reference that claimed that the Slate and Slater families of LeHave/Lunenburg area are one and the same but I can't confirm the link. It does seem likely however, since the Slate surname is occupational in nature Slater was probably the original name. I have found a Anna Catherine Slate marring a Valentine Acker in Lunenburg in 1782 (she is listed as Himmelman a widow) and a Tax record for a George Slate in 1791 at New Dublin. I think Anna is Frederick's sister and George is one of his sons. I also found a reference to a Frederick Slate in Yarmouth that is most likely his son as well. S my best guess is this....

Frederick Slate and Unk. married and had
Frederick
George
Martin
Barbara
Elizabeth
Mary Ann
Unk dau.

I think that where people have gone wrong in the past is when reading the 1827 Census. It lists only Martin Slate. I think this can only make sense if we look at it as Frederick's grandson not his son and that Martin Sr.and his wife have either left or were missed for that census. I believe that it fits like this.....

Martin son of Frederick and Unk. had
Frederick
Catherine m 1812 to Elam Thomas (2nd wife)
Elizabeth b abt 1794
Martin B 1795 d 1881 m 1818 to Rebecca Swain
Jacob b 1803 d 1885 m 1848 to Elizabeth Catherine Faye

Since they were the only Slates in the area at the time Martin Sr. is the most logical parent of both Martin Jr. and Jacob (although there is no proof for Jacob) I think Frederick would have been too old to still be having children, but again no proof.

Well Jean, I hope this helps. If you find anything please send it along. I would really appreciate any solid data (or even mere speculation!) that you might happen upon.
Cheers
Brad
