Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
Does anyone know of their Irish ancestor that may have deserted and settled around Cape Negro/Port La Tour area of N.S.? Family legend has it that our ancestor jumped ship and swam ashore to Cape Negro Island, Shelburne Co., N.S. This ancestor was born in 1813 in Ireland, changed his name to Brown after deserting, but I don't have anymore info on him. I would assume that there were others who also deserted at that time. Very interested in finding a clue to this mystery.

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
Hi Anne:
I do have an ancestor from the area named Robert Brown, however he was a loyalist of English ancestry who came to Shelburne County as a disbanded soldier of Tarleton's Legion. So while the name is the same, the background information is different. Do you have information on who he married and some of his children?
Thanks, Brian

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
Hi Brian: My ancestor that I referred to changed his name to John Brown from Hoyt or Holt and married Catherine Snow. I have all the info from there on(with the exception of Catherine's parentage, etc.). Seems like I've struck a brick wall with him, have searched the records at Shelburne Genealogical Office last summer. I know there were other Brown's in the area but of a different line. By the way, are you the Brian that attended the Smith tea last summer? I was there.

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
This story sounds simalar to the story I was told about my Brown Line. My great grandfather's name was John Brown, whom was supposed to have been a deserter whom landed in Port Latour. He was supposedly of Spanish decent, His wife's name was Charlotte O'Connell or Connell. He was born between 1825- 1830. His son, John married Lois Jane Garron. They had 6 Children, Ada, Lewis, Gertrude (my grandmother)Izola, John & Edward. If any of these names sound familier please contact me at l_tremblay46@hotmail.com Seems like a strange coincidence to hear such similar stories. Happy hunting. Linda from Ontario

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
Hi Anne, My name Jeff Brown and I am currently trying to trace my family lineage. I was told that my relative changed his name from Hoyt to Brown after coming from Ireland in the early 1800's. I seemed to trace it back to John and Catherine (Snow) Brown. My grandfather's name was Alpheus Brown and his parents were Josiah and Sarah Brown from Upper port la Tour. Do you have any similarities because I'm stuck also..
Thanks

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
Hello Jeff: What a nice surprise to hear from you. My mother , Leona, was a sister to your father and I remember finally meeting uncle Alpheus and his wife, about a year before he passed away. I knew they had a son, Winston, but didn't know about you. I've wanted to go to Truro to meet family members, but just have never got around to it. I live in Bedford-not too far away. I have a lot of research done on our family and would be glad to send it to you. Where do you live? We'll have to try to meet each other. We would be first cousins. I finally found Catherine Snow's lineage, but John Brown is now my only brick wall--if only I had a few more clues to trace him. The story is that he was a deserter, jumped ship near Cape Negro, but I haven't any other clues....not even a photo. The census says that he was born in 1813 in Ireland, but I don't know which county. I'll be anxious to hear from you again. Anne

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
Hi Anne, It is quite a relief to contact a relative from the Brown family. I am actually Alpheus' grandson. My dad, Ernie, and I decided to try and find some link to our family heritage back in Ireland. My grandfather spoke frequently to my father about his family and I do remember him mentioning your mother and Albert. Alpheus had 4 sons and a daughter. Frank has lived in Moncton with his wife for over 30 years. My uncle Winston still resides in Truro with his family. The youngest son, Perry, has lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario for 20 years or so, but recently moved back home to Cape Breton. My father and Aunt Jocelyn remained in North Sydney with my grandparents and raised their families there. We have a fairly large extended family right now and we get together as much as possible.
I would greatly appreciate any information regarding our family. My grandfather always said that we had a large extended family from the mainland, so maybe the disconnect is finally ending. My father will be very happy to hear from you. Thanks.
Jeff
ps: When I tried to explain who my son was named after and the story behind it, many relatives never understood the significance. Finally someone who will; I named him Jack (for John) Josiah Brown :>

Re: Deserters to Shelburne Co., N.S.Can.
I don't know if you are still around Linda, but thanks for the info of Charlotte O'Connell.
A gap in my family tree has always been Mary Reed, my great-great grandmother. Some Nova Scotia vital statsare now online, and it enabled me to find out that Mary's parents were Chrlotte O'Connell of Nova Scotia and Roland Reed of the USA. However, on my great aunt's (great-grandmother's sister) birth record her mother is put down as Mary Brown, not Mary Reed.
I figure Roland Reed died young and Charlotte re-married John Brown.

While I am very happy to hear that this Brown family line has connected, I am still so sad that my brick wall still stands. Any one that thinks they may have a clue to the John Brown and Charlotte O'Connell or Connel line please send it on Thanks Linda in Ontario
