I am looking for any information on my ancestors John Carter
(died bef 1855) and his wife Catherine McGarth/McGrath/McGarath. Their son James Carter ( b.1826 or 1831) married Sarah Mckay in 1855 in the Holy Guardian Angel Church in L'Ardoise, Cape Breton.
I would be be gratefull for any information or suggestions for further research, since I have run out of leads to track down. I'll be happy to share what I have on James & Sarah's descendants.
Thanks

The first Carter married a Catherine McGrath, before arrival in St. Peter's. I do know that the first Carter was actually named Snell, and changed his name to Carter on arrival in Cape Breton. The children of this couple were born very early 1800s. I do not know the origins of Snell/Carter and McGrath wife, other than the fact they were both born Nova Scotia. Does this meet with the info you have?

What children did this couple have other than James CARTER?

How did you discover that John CARTER was previously SNELL and married elsewhere? Where were you able to find records or documentation?

Many thanks!

I received the info on Snell from Raymond Landry in L'Ardoise who passed away two years ago. There is additional info on this Carter family at the website below. Not to confuse matters but I have a Philip Carter of County Londonderry, Irelan who married Frances McGrath in Halifax, 1830 and lived in Liverpool, NS

Thanks - I'll check out the website you've given the link for!

I found that website the other day but so far, have not been able to find any records for John CARTER + Catherine McGRATH's family .... do you remember which section info on this family was situated in?

Many thanks!

Look under Church Records - 'C'. Have you searched the web site below? It has over a thousand Carter's in Nova Scotia.

I looked under C before and only found James' marriage specifically for family of "John and Catherine".

Also the baptisms of 2 of James and Sarah's children.

I use the NS Genealogy site all the time but only looked specifially for the deaths of either John or Catherine as well as James or Sarah ... I'll check again!
