Edwin Wright, Bear Island, Point Tupper

Surnames: Wright, Langley, Forbrigger
I have a bit of a problem.

I have an Edwin Wright, son of Charles and Elizabeth Wright, in my family tree. He is listed in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census as married to Mary or Mary Jane. He is the only Edwin Wright I can find in any of the Richmond County Census Records. The Problem is that I have 2 Mary Jane's who are supposed to have married an Edwin Wright. Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger. The are in fact first cousins and close in age.

I have a marriage record for Mary Jane Langley and Edwin Wright for January 28, 1882 and she is listed as aged 19. This means her birth date would have been about 1863.

I also have a death certificate for Mary Jane (Forbrigger) Wright which lists her birth date as February 14, 1863.

The only information I have seems to point to them both marrying the same man (they have the same childrens names in all the records I can find), and I believe that Mary Jane Langley may have died and Edwin then married Mary Jane Forbrigger. But without confirmation I don't want to list them as the 1st and 2nd wives.

I am looking for either the death record for Mary Jane (Langley) Wright or the marriage record for Mary Jane (Forbrigger) Wright. Or the record for another Edwin Wright if such exists.

Thanks
Terri Forbrigger

In the 1881 Census (www.familysearch.org), Richmond County, there is a Hennery LANGLEY, widowed, year of birth 1814, age 67, and a Mary Jane FORBRIGU, age 18, year of birth 1863 living in the same household.

I also found a death record for Mary Jane Langley, age 48, who died May 24 1865. This would make her year of birth about 1817. She was married (no husband's name) and her father was H. Ferbrigger, Carraboo Cove, Richmond County. I believe she is the wife of Henry Langley above.

In the 1891 Census there is a Henry Langley living with Edwin & Mary Wright.

The birth record for William Vincent Wright shows Edwin Wright & Mary Jane Forbrigger as his parents.

I believe your Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger are one & the same. What her actual maiden name was is uncertain, and how to prove it??

Thank you Carol, but Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger are actually two different people.

Generation 1:
Francis Forbrigger b: Belgium married Susan Cane b: Philadelphis; d: 29 Apr 1870, NS. They had 4 children.

1. Henry Forbrigger b: Abt. 1816, Halifax, NS
2. Mary Jane Forbrigger b: Abt. 1817, Halifax, NS
3. Margaret Caroline Forbrigger b: Abt. 1820
4. Catherine Forbrigger b: Abt. 1822

Gerneration 2:
1. Henry Forbrigger b: Abt. 1816, Halifax, NS; d: 10 Jan 1873, Caribou Cove, NS married Mary Hayes. They had 3 children.

Catherine Forbrigger b: Abt. 1848
Susan Forbrigger b: Abt. 1850
Mary Jane Forbrigger b: 14 Feb 1863, Sunnyside, NS d: 3 Oct 1949, Point Tupper, NS (this information is from her death certificate, where she is listed as Mary Jane Wright)

2. Mary Jane Forbrigger b: Abt. 1817, Halifax, NS; d: 24 May 1865, Caribou Cove, NS married Henry Langley. They had 6 children.

Caroline Langley
George Langley
Susan Langley
Henry Langley
Amelia Langley
Mary Jane Langley b: Abt. 1863 (This is from her marriage record)

Marriage Register
Edwin Wright, age 23 married Mary J. Langley, age 19 on 28 January 1882, in Bear Island, NS. (According to this Mary J. Langley would have been born About 1863)

Death Certificate:
Edwin Wright d: 5 July 1943, Point Tupper age 84, married
Wife: Mary Jane Wright.

Death Certificate:
Mary Jane Wright d: 3 Oct 1863, Point Tupper age 86, widow
daughter of Henry Forgrigger and Mary Hayes. Her birth date is also given (14 Feb 1863)

I also have the birth record for William Vincent Wright.

But as you can see Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger were first cousins. And I believe the Hennery (Henry) Langley that Mary Jane Forbrigger was living with in 1881 was in fact her Uncle, father of Mary Jane Langley.

My ancestors were not very imaginative when it came to naming their children, they tended to name them for sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. I have a slew of Mary Janes, Carolines, Catherines, Susans etc. This doesn't include the male names.

I believe Edwin Wright married Mary Jane Langley and had several children with her, then she died and he married her cousin Mary Jane Forbrigger. The 1901 and 1911 census data I have doesn't help since his wife (or wives) is listed as Mary, or Mary J. with no maiden name. What I really need is a death record for Mary Jane Wright (Langley) or a marriage record for Mary Jane Forbrigger.

Thanks again Terri Forbrigger

It is unlikely that both Mary Jane (Forbrigger)Langley and Henry Forbrigger both had a daughter, Mary Jane, born in 1863 and that both these women married Edwin Wright. We know from the birth record of William Vincent Wright that his mother was Mary Jane Forbrigger. Edwin Wright married Mary Jane Langley in Jan. 1882 and Josephine Augusta Wright was born to Edwin and Mary Jane Wright in Sept 1882. It is possible that between the birth of the first and second children Mary Jane Langley died and he married Mary Jane Forbrigger but I don't think so.
I believe Mary Jane Langley was actually Mary Jane Forbrigger.Henry Forbrigger remarried in Feb. 1865. I believe that when his first wife died, Mary Jane Forbrigger went to live with Henry and Mary Jane Langley. She appears on the 1871 Census as Mary Jane Langley. On the 1881 Census she is MJ Forbrigger living with the Langleys. In 1891 she is the wife of Edwin Wright with Henry Langley, a domestic (not the father-in law of the head of the household) living in the house.I believe she became known as MJ Langley while living with the Langleys and that is why she is MJ Langley on her marriage record. I have not found both a Mary Jane Langley and a Mary Jane Forbrigger born in 1863 on either the 1871 or the 1881 Census.

You could be completely right, but the problem still remains. There is no way as yet to prove if there is really one or two Mary Jane's. I'm hoping to get to Cape Breton soon and start digging in the church records, this may answer all the questions or just confuse the issue further.

The records of Zion Robertson United Church are available at the Halifax Archives. The Port Hastings Museum has a great deal of genealogical information on file. Perhaps they would have an obituary for Edwin Wright.
The death of Mary Jane Wright is reported by a grandson, Vincent McDonald.I would assume that Josephine Wright married a McDonald. If you can find documentation that Josephine's mother is Mary Jane Forbrigger you would know that the two Mary Janes were the same person.
Should you find the proof you are looking for I would appreciate it if you would post the results.

After a very long search, I have been unable to find any record of a Mary Jane Langley beyond the marriage record to Edwin Wright. I therefore have to conclude that Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger are one and the same.

The grandson Vincent McDonald is my great uncle, brother to jean mcconald smith, my grandmother and mother to my Dad, Herbert Francis McDonald. I haven't been able to find the link between wright and McDonald. I know my dad's birth was registered in Sydney, but he was raised by the Wright's in Point Typper, ns born 1927 died 1985. Vincent McDonald grandson lived in pennsylvania and was married to Sue. Most of the Wright children lived in the us when they became adults.

If you sign into familysearch.org and search for Josephine Wright born in Nova Scotia Canada you will be able to view the record of the baptism of Josehhine Wright , age 15, born of the marriage of Edwin Wright and Mary Forbrigger of Sunnyside.
Since Josephine was the eldest child of Edwin and Mary Wright it would support your conclusion that Mary Jane Langley and Mary Jane Forbrigger are one person.
