McKay — Ranald, Christena O'Hanley McKay, James, Sophia, Kate McDonald McKay, Mary McKay
I'm looking for death/burial info on Ranald/McKay, born 10 April 1845 in Antigonish, and a number of people in his family. Ranald died sometime between the 1901 and 1911 censuses. He lived in Albion Mines or Stellarton at the time of his death. Ranald's wife, Christena O'Hanley, born 17 May 1852. She died April 25, 1923. Her address was #6 Foster Pit in Stellarton. Her death certificate says she was to be buried April 27, 1923, with MacQuarie's as the undertaker. I do not know where she was buried. I believe her funeral service may have been at Our Lady of Lourdes, as that seems to be where family marriages, births and baptisms took place. James McKay, b 1840 in Antigonish. I believe he died sometime after the 1891 census, at which time he was living in Stellarton. His wife Sophia was living with Ranald & Christena in 1901, and with Christena in 1911. She died 10 Mar 1915, living in Foster Pit. Some people believe she's a sister to Ranald. I don't know a maiden name. Her death certificate says she's married to James McKay, rather than being a widow, so I don't know if she and James were separated and she living with her brother-in-law and his wife, or if James preceded her in death. Ranald was married earlier to Catherine (Kate) McDonald on 20 September 1869 @ Stella Maris in Pictou, and I believe they had a child named Mary. I have no information on either Catherine or Mary. He was listed as a widower on the marriage license to Christena in 1884. I'd like to know what happened to Catherine and her daughter. If you can shed any light on any of these people, we would be very grateful. Thank you!

Re: McKay — Ranald, Christena O'Hanley McKay, James, Sophia, Kate McDonald McKay, Mary McKay
Hi, I don't have much info but I do believe that James McKay's wife was Sophia Whidden, daughter of Samuel Whidden and Sophia Vincent from Colchester County, Nova Scotia. James and Sophia are shown in the 1871 census living with the Whiddens. The Whiddens are in my maternal grandfather's tree.
My daughter, through her paternal grandmother, is related to the McKays. Allan McKay & Catherine McInnes are her 3 great grandparents. I don't believe I have much more than you in this family but I believe that Ranald's daughter with Kate McDonald was born in 1874 and named Catherine.
Not sure if this helps any!!

Re: McKay — Ranald, Christena O'Hanley McKay, James, Sophia, Kate McDonald McKay, Mary McKay
Thank you SO MUCH!!!! Sophia has been one of the big mysteries we've been trying to solve for about 10 years! Many people think she's a sister to Ranald because she was living with him and Christena, but I'd questioned that ever since I found her death certificate. You've cleared that up for me. Allan McKay & Catherine McInnis are my husband's 2 great grandparents, and I'm brick-walled with them. Allan's death certificate says he was illegitimate, but his brother-in-law was the informant and I believe it possible that he simply said he didn't know Allan's parents, and "unknown" got written down as illegitimate. I don't know if we're ever solve that mystery!
Thank you again for the info on Sophia. Several children in the family were named Sophia, including a daughter of Ranald & Christena, so she certainly must have been well-loved!

Re: McKay — Ranald, Christena O'Hanley McKay, James, Sophia, Kate McDonald McKay, Mary McKay
Hi, I haven't gotten too far either with Allan McKay or Catherine McInnes/McInnis -- there are so many of them with the same names!! LOL One never knows with birth/marriage/death records -- I have seen so many mistakes which can send one down the wrong path!!! I have seen death records indicating the name of the husband even though he has passed away. You might perhaps want to verify the info I gave you on Ranald & Catherine's daughter -- I haven't been able to confirm this.
My daughter descends from Flora Ann McKay who married Angus MacLean/son Allan Angus MacLean married Katherine Devison/daughter Mary Ann MacLean married James Gerald Buote from PEI (my daughter's grandparents).
