Marriage, Solomon Johnston 1867

Marriage, Solomon Johnston 1867

On the Nova Scotia genealogy site, I found a marriage on July 25, 1867 for Solomon Johnston and Margaret McDonald in a Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Co. Picton. I think it might be my Solomon as he was born Ontario, father James, and was age 30 (2 years out).
Is there more information available somewhere, other than the 2 line entry in the registry on the genealogy site. How about in the church itself? What is the name of the church in Hopewell, Nova Scotia. I don't know exactly where Hopewell is. Solomon had a first cousin, Margaret McDonald, but dont' know if it is her as her parents are not listed. I cannot make out the first name of the second witness - someone McLean. First witness was John McDonald.
Thanks for any help

Hi Peggy,
The United Presbyterian Church still exists in Hopewell although I don't know anything about it. I live in Toronto, about 1,600 km away. However, the transcription of vital statistics from the Presbyterian Witness might have a little more detail. Let me know if you have not seen that and I will check in the library for you next time I'm downtown. BTW, I see that the 1879 Meacham Atlas of Pictou County shows a "Mrs Johnson" living on Factory Street beside the Intercontinental Railway Line. Perhaps Solomon had passed away by this time? I also see in Janet C. Bain's "History of Hopewell" a listing of the inhabitants of Hopewell village includes Solomon Johnston, miner. There is a Henry McLean, tanner and storekeeper listed, and I wonder if he is the marriage witness, as the entry in your marriage register line looks like a H followed by a descender letter, perhaps "y".
In addition, there is a picture of a class of school children some time after 1912, including "Josephine Johnson" as the teacher.....

Cheers,
Rick MacNeil

Hi Rick,
Thank you for replying. I have not seen anything in the Presbyterian Witness so would love to know if it has more info. Solomon was alive in 1889 as he did a land transaction in that year so the 1879 Mrs. Johnson is not likely to be his wife. Unfortunately, the land transaction does not give Solomon's residence in 1889 whereas most legal transactions do give the residence. Solomon's residence in 1871 is given as Gloucester in that land transaction.
The witness at the wedding might be Henry McLean.
I don't know if Solomon had children. I would like to see the 1871 Gloucester census to see if there are any there.
Thanks again
I think I will follow up with the United Presbyterian Church in Hopewell.
