The lives of George Henry Terry and Ruth Olivia Pineo have been dissected and proven so I thought that I would take a stab at identifying who the other Ruth Pineo might be. This is what I have:
Asa Coffill (1816-1909) and Ruth Pineo (1818-bef 1901) marry about 1835 and have six children:
Charles Coffill (1839-1912) marries Armanilla Brown - buried at Lower Horton Cemetery Amanda Coffill (1848-1905) marries George Viner - buried at Scotts Bay Union Cemetery Esther Ann Coffill (1850-1923) marries Agustus Sanford - buried at Scotts Bay Union Cemetery Harriet Coffill (1856-1928) marries Asaph Steele - buried at Scotts Bay Union Cemetery Julia Coffill (1859-unknown) Did she marry? Where is she buried? Jesse A. Coffill (1860-1899) marries Jane McLellan - where is he buried?
Marriage registrations name parents as Asa and Ruth.
Asa Coffill appears on the Census of Canada for 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 His D/R is dated 1909
Ruth Pineo Coffill appears on the Census of Canada for 1871, 1881, 1891 Her death date is not known.
The only place that Ruth’s maiden name ever appears is on the burial records.
The only other male members of the Pineo family that are buried at Scotts Bay Union appear to be: Barnaby Pineo alias Barnaby Newcombe Pineo (1822-1903) marries Almira Lydia Jenks Elijah Pineo (1788-1869) marries Elizabeth Newcomb)
Elijah and Barnaby would be father and son.
Almira L. Almira L. Pineo, died 13 April 1873, wife of Barnaby Pineo. Scotts Bay Union CE 80 Pineo Elijah Elijah Pineo, died 30 Aug 1869, age 82 years. Scotts Bay Union CE 80
There are various deeds involving Asa deeding land to his children Jesse, Esther, Harriet
That is about all that I have been able to find. Does anyone else have anything new to share.

Thanks Kenn - I suspect that there are lots of folks out there who would love to know who she belongs to.
I have looked at some records and in doing so I see that Ruth is a name used frequently in the family. Dorothy Pineo who married John Reed, named a child Ruth and that child named a child Ruth, just not Pineo. Dorothy died in 1770; her daughter Ruth in 1811 and her granddaughter Ruth in 1793. Did someone then name a child after these Ruths? If so who?
I also found a Ruth Pineo born to Frederick Pineo and Bessie MacPhee, but she was born after 1848.
I also took a look at travel records:
Knowing that Pineo is often misspelt as in Pine, Pines, pain, Payne, etc. I looked for and found A Ruth Pine born about 1810 passing from Passaquoddy, Maine to New Brunswick; A Stephen Pine born about 1795; a Jonathan Pine born about 1802; a Mr Pine born about 1806
I wonder if all of these folks are related - I have found nothing else to prove a relationship. There was even a Ruth Alexandria in New Brunswick, but dates were too recent and she was a descendant of John Obediah Pineo, brother to our other Ruth Olivia Pineo. Ha!
Also found David Pineo (grandson of Peter Pineo and Elizabeth Samson) and Priscilla Hill in Callais, Maine.
I am really starting to wonder if this Ruth Pineo was a widow, maiden name unknown, who married Asa Coffill. Has anyone gone down that impossible road? Does anyone have a Ruth that married a Pineo who died before 1835, the approximate date Asa and Ruth married?
The only Pineo on the mountain during that time period who is buried at the Scotts Bay Union Cemetery would be Elijah Pineo and his wife Elizabeth Newcomb - their children are all born between 1814 and 1825 - just the time period we are looking at. Was there an additional child named Ruth? Elijah?s daughter Eleanor named a child Ruth. Is there any chance that the daughter Rebecca born 9 March 1817 might possibly be our Ruth?
I am just trying to look at alternatives here, but now my head is spinning, so I need to get out for a good long, fast walk.

Thanks Jerry Huntley for this. One never knows when a salient piece of information is going to show up. I posted it here so as to keep my research all together in one place, convenient for me!
"This Ruth Pineo is of interest to me as she is a third great grandmother. Some sources have said she was born in Pereau(x), Kings Co., Nova Scotia. However, in the 1891 Census her province of birth is given as New Brunswick, although both parents are listed as born in Nova Scotia. Not sure if this is any kind of a good lead or not but it may offer a hint as to who her parents were if there were Pineos that moved to New Brunswick from Nova Scotia. The 1871 and 1881 Census both give her province of birth as Nova Scotia. I am afraid my knowledge of the Pineo family is rather limited. It looks like the Coffill family arrived in Scott’s Bay before 1871 as they were enumerated here for the 1871 census. The first land transaction I have seen involved son, Jesse Andrew Coffill purchasing a parcel of land from Jacob Lockhart in 1874. Jesse later sold this property to his father, Asa in 1898."
Jerry, this does fall in with what I have discovered, but no tangible leads have surfaced yet. Thanks again. Perhaps someone out there has some gleaned information on our Ruth. Pun intended.

Just a few added notes regarding Ruth Pineo. Just so I have all my research here in one place:
The death registrations for Asa and Ruth's daughters, Eliza Jane, Esther Ann and Harriet Louisa all show their mother's name as Ruth Pineo. I think this could rule out this being her surname from a previous marriage to Asa Coffill.
Only Esther Ann's registration gives her place of birth as Pereaux. The other two just say Nova Scotia. (based on this, I wonder if it would be prudent to look at Pineo families in the Pereau/Blomidon/Medford area of Cornwallis Township/Kings County)
Most of the census returns show Ruth's racial origin as French.
For the record; Asa and Ruth's children: 1. Charles C. Coffill b. 23 April 1936 in Hortonville; d. 6 January 1912 in Stellarton, Pictou County; married Arminella Brown and had five children 2. unknown son b. 1842 (no source on this so questionable?) 3. Eliza Jane Coffill b. 12 August 1844 in Horton; d. 23 November 1930 in Scots Bay; married Edward Comstock and had four children 4. Amanda A. Coffill b. 18 January 1848 in Horton Twp.; d. 11 Jul 1905 in Scots Bay; married George Viner and had one daughter 5. Esther Ann Coffill b. 6 August 1850 in Lower Horton; d. 16 November 1923 in Scots Bay; married Augustus Sanford and had six children 6. Jesse Andrew Coffill b. 1853 in Horton; d. at sea in 1901 (again, no source on this date); married Mary Jane MacLellan and had eight children 7. Harriet Louisa Coffill b. 17 January 1856 in Horton; died 22 November 1928 in Scots Bay; married Asaph Sherman Steele and had six children 8. Julia E. Coffill b. 1859; d. 4 January 1888 in Boston; married Ethan C. Hibbard in Boston;

Thanks very much for this Jerry. It all pretty much matches up with what I have in my data base. Ruth would be a third cousin, three times removed to me, but I do like a mystery. I have been looking at the Pineo families in the Medford area as well as any Pineo in Kings County who might have been a father in that time period.
This ladies ancestry has no clues other than her name, but the search does go on.
Thanks, Gary

I'd like to be able to contribute to the conversation, but sadly don't have much to offer. The Rebecca PINEO b. 9 Mar 1817, daughter of Elijah PINEO and Elizabeth NEWCOMB I have a death date of 26 Apr 1839, so don't think she could be your Ruth PINEO.
I wonder about the age 58 in the 1871 census as opposed to the ages of 62 and 72 in the 1881 and 1891 census. Just because the latter two census dates jive doesn't mean that a birthdate of abt 1819 is necessarily more certain than abt 1813. I mention that because I wonder where the marriage date of about 1840 comes from?
If Charles C. COFFILL was born 23 Apr 1836 then a marriage date of abt 1840 is problematic. If they were married before 1836 that would add more weight to the 1813 date. Also, if 1836 is correct, then there may be some missing children between 1836 and 1844?
With that in mind, who were the parents of Harris COFFILL b. abt 1838? He m. Maria and had a daughter Annie May who married George Davenport COMSTOCK.

Thanks Steve for this:
I have:
Patrick Coffill married Sarah Huntley Daniel Coffill (married twice) married Levinia Brown Marsh (married twice) Harris Coffill married Mariah Smith Annie May Cofill married George Davenport Comstock
This is a side road and I have not investigated it thoroughly or proven each generation. Hope this helps you out.
I do believe that Asa Coffill and Ruth Pineo married about 1835 as Charles, supposedly their first child, was born in 1836. There is also a possibility as you suggest that there were other children born between 1837 and 1843, no evidence yet.
Now as for the birthdate of Ruth Pineo - 1818 or earlier is certainly possible as a date of 1818 would make her 17 when she married, not unusual for the time.
I keep trying to fill in blanks hoping the truth would pop out. today I spent time looking for members of the Coffill family that may have married into the Pineo family. It is not unusual for brothers in one family to marry sisters in another, etc. with no luck.

Thank you Peter Lake for your great breakdown of the Coffill family that I am following. I do have a few comments/concern/additions:
1) Asa and Ruth are both buried at Scotts Bay Union Cemetery - Kings CD 2) In all of the records that I have reviewed I have never seen Asaph used - only Asa 3) In all of the records that I have reviewed I have never seen Ruth Olivia used - only Ruth 4) Based on 2 and 3 and the absence of proof, I have chosen to use Asa and Ruth in all of my dealings with this portion of the family, even though grandchildren may be called Asaph. 5) I believe that the marriage of Asa and Ruth would have taken place before 1836 rather than about 1838 as you suggest as their first child Charles was born in April of 1836. 6) I am confused as to where Female child #2 (1842) and male child #4 (1845) come from, but do agree that there were probably additional children in that time frame - do you have a source? 7) Amanda A. Coffill is a child of Asa and Ruth, not James Coffill and Sarah Ann Martin. This is proven on Amanda's marriage registration where Asa and Ruth are so named. Please do not tell me that there are two people with the same name. 8) I do agree with most of the children of James Coffill and Sarah Ann Martin with the following exceptions; I did not have Abigail Coffill and I have only ever seen (on Ancestry - I know not a source , only a lead) Harris Coffill as the son of Daniel Coffill and his second wife Lavinia Marsh.
This still does not get me any closer as to what I am trying to prove - who are the parents of Ruth Pineo, but thanks for helping fill in some of the blanks.

I have Prudence and Harris as the children of Daniel Coffill and Rebekah Huntley.
Gary... I used to think it would take a sledge hammer to knock down this 'brick wall" of who Ruth's parents are...but I can see that a whole lot of welding chipping hammers may accomplish the same task : )

Thanks Eric. I stand corrected.
The 1871 Census has Daniel and his second wife Zeruiah and a number of small children. Supposedly they married in 5 Jan 1859. The Census reports his wife as being born in 1826, so she would only have been 10 when Harris was born. Mea Culpa.
Therefore, Daniel and his first wife Sarah who married on 15 Nov 1840 (two illegitimate children?) have the following children - I think:
1) Harris - born about 1836 2) Prudence - born about 1837 - cannot find anywhere 3) Charlotte A. - born about 1850 - living with Daniel and Zeruiah in 1871 Census - her presence does not make her a daughter. Could be a niece or cousin. Where is she in 1881? Married? 4) Alfred - no dates and not on any Census - died young?
Sp, what was going on between 1838 and 1859 when Daniel married his second wife?
Are we any closer to finding Ruth Pineo's parents. No but we have more information on the family.
