Maybe I can shed some more light on Daniel and family.
Daniel Coffill was three times married.
His first wife was Levinia Brown who died either in child birth or shortly after having their secodn child, Prudence. Their first child was Harris James. Harris b. 17 Sep 1836 and died in Peru; Prudence b. 1838

His second wife was Rebecca/Rebekah Huntley and they had two additional children: Charlotte b. 1850 and Alfred b. 1853. I do not have a source listed for Daniel and Rebecca's 1840 marriage and it does seem off that there was a ten year gap before they had any children. At the same time, I imagine Daniel would have been looking for a mother for his two older children as quickly as he could so the lends credence to the 1840 date. Rebecca died in 1858.

His third wife was Zeruiah Marsh; married in 1859. She and Daniel had four additional children:
Daniel "Willard" b. 1859; James "Albert" b. 1862; William Nelson b. 1862; Joseph Edmund b. 1869.

We've sort of strayed onto another Coffill family but I thought I would add what I have.

Thanks Jerry. This certainly cleaned up the mess that I had. Three wives - I never thought of that but it works with the marriage dates and the births of the children. It is OK to get off the trail a bit, because one never knows if one will find someone married to a "Pineo" that leads us back to that elusive Ruth. A number of the children may be found for birth or death or marriage at novascotiagenealogy.com

Thanks again,

Did some looking around on Family Search and Ancestry and found a couple interesting tidbits with regard to Daniel Coffill's family.
In 1863, two Coffill girls, Prudence and Ann, were passengers on a schooner bound for Boston that was captained by a D. Coffill.
The girls' ages were given as 23 and 18 giving them birth years of approximately 1840 and 1845. The 1840 date corresponds nicely with the birth year for Daniel's daughter, Prudence.
The Ann born in 1945 is interesting and I have a theory to throw out here: is it possible that the Ann Coffill who accompanied Prudence to Boston could be Charlotte A. Coffill (the A could stand for Ann) born to Daniel and Rebecca (Huntley)? Her unsourced birth date was 1850 and caused problems with there being a ten year gap from their marriage to her birth. An 1845 birth would narrow that gap.

I also looked at Daniel and Rebecca's son, Alfred and came across something interesting that was sitting in my own database. I'm not sure there was an Alfred born to Daniel and Rebecca or if there was, his birth year may be incorrect. The Alfred I had was b. 1853, the same year as William Coffill (Daniel's brother) and wife Phoebe Pickles had a son, William "Alfred" Coffill. This Alfred married Mary Hardacker in 1874. I had two children assigned to Daniel's Alfred but upon looking at the birth registration for the oldest, Norman (b. 1876), his parents are given as Alfred and Mary Hardacker. The 1881 Census also shows the other son I had assigned to Daniel's Alfred, Harris (b. 1879) living with William's Alfred along with Mary and other son, Norman.

Jerry,

I had a look at the passenger lists and wonder if the age 18 might be 13 for Ann Coffill in 1863. Did you notice the 1871 passenger list for Annie aged 20? That matches the 1871 census for Charlotte Ann Coffill.

I think you're correct that there is only one Alfred.

Check out the 2 Feb 1871 Kings county birth record for James William COFFILL, son of Charlotte Ann COFFILL. What happened to him, so you suppose?
