Surnames: Pineo Coffill Terry
Whew, so well done Gary... added and corrected. Thank you.

I have a couple of differences but the one that Marilyn is wondering about is "xiii" Ruth Olivia Pineo... many years ago I was working on Coffills and I wasn't able to find the parents of Ruth Pineo, wife of Asaph Coffill. Called the Pineo expert in Kings County and he looked through his binders and he didn't have her parents either... So it seems there are at least two Ruth Pineo's born in this time period... one Ruth Olivia Pineo, dau of George 'Erastus' Pineo and Prudence Beckwith born abt 1819 and m 5 Dec 1853 George Henry Terry, died 12 Feb 1888 and bur in St John's Anglican, Church Street, with her husband, George Terry. Ruth O Terry is found living in Centreville in the 1871 census and living in Scots Bay? in the 1881 census.

The second Ruth Pineo, b abt 1819 and m abt 1838 Asaph Coffill... both of these dates are just guesses : ) and d aft the Apr 1891 census... Marilyn, don't know if this is the Ruth whose parents you are looking for, but I, along with many others would love to know her parents : )

I have been chasing this one like a dog with a bone trying to prove each step:

Thanks Eric for your input and also Ken for yours. Always insightful if not provocative.

Two people named Ruth Olivia Pineo - all databases on Ancestry seem to claim that they have the same parents - Erastus Pineo and Prudence Beckwith and that they were both born about 1820 and died about 1888. That is certainly not proof - just observation.

#1 - Ruth Olivia Pineo marries on 5 Dec 1853 in Cornwallis to George Henry Terry - Their grave stone (I have a picture) is located at Saint Johns Anglican Church Cemetery. Of course George would not appear on any Census as he died in 1860. They appear to have had one child Julia Maria Terry, born in 1854. Ruth, a widow, appears on the 1871 Census of Canada with her daughter Julia. and in 1881Census

#2 - Ruth Olivia Pineo marries about 1840 to Asa Coffin - Their Union is substantiated by the Census of Canada 1871, 1881 and 1891. Asa is a widower in 1901 Census so Ruth died before 1901. Furthermore the marriages of four of their children, Amanda, Jess, Esther and Julia, identify their parents as being Asa and Ruth.

So how do we prove which Ruth Olivia Pineo is the daughter of Erastus and Prudence - any suggestions? Is there a marriage certificate or record somewhere which states parents?

As always your input is valued and appreciated. Gary

Tonight, my guardian angel, JB, who always sweeps down with what I need sent me two deeds:

1) Deed - dated 1844, widow Prudence Pineo - the deed names nine children including Ruth Pineo, showing that Ruth was unmarried in 1844. The other sisters were named with their spouses surnames, Ruth was not.

2) Deed/quit claim - dated 1859, mentions Henry Terry and his wife Ruth. The lands in question are the same as those devised by Prudence Pineo (first deed) and are being sold for $3,000 pounds.

This proves that the Ruth Olivia Pineo who married George Henry Terry is the daughter of Erastus Pineo and Prudence Beckwith.

Now who are the parents of the Ruth Olivia Pineo who married Asa Coffin - another mystery waiting to be solved.

Who are the Parents of Erastus Pineo (I am posting this again so that it lines up with the information above.):

Scenario #1
Erastus son of Daniel Pineo and Anne Bentley. This is confirmed by the Kings Township Book showing a son Erastus born 3 Sept 1774. Also approved applications through the Mayflower Society and the Sons of the American Revolution Society further confirm this parentage and that this Erastus married Prudence Beckwith. Both of these applications follow daughter Eunice Pineo who married Judah Eaton. The Kings Township Books also confirm the parentage and the marriage on 14 May 1795. The History of Kings County also confirms parentage.

Scenario #2
Erastus son of Peter Pineo and Elizabeth Samson, birth date unknown, marries Prudence Unknown and have a daughter Eunice born on Oct 11, 1798 who married Judah Eaton. This is confirmed by The History of Kings County. Erastus is identified as a child of Peter and Elizabeth in Planters and Pioneers. I can find no other documentation of this.

Both of these scenarios can be proven, but only one can be correct. With all of the documentation for scenario #1, is it possible that the Eaton history was incorrect?

Thanks again, Gary

One more item:

Who are the parents of Erastus Pineo? Another deed and probate from Joan Boyd with thanks.

1) The probate, dated Feb 16, 1843, of Dan Pineo (husband of Anne Bentley - she had passed before Dan) names his children and grandchildren including son Erastus, daughter-in-law Prudence and Ruth his granddaughter.

2) A dead, dated August 13, 1857, by Dan Pineo's grandson Dan Pineo, names his Mother as Prudence (Erastus is dead at this point) and his grandfather Dan Pineo who has also passed on.

Conclusive proof of parentage has now been established, and of course Dan Pineo was the son of Peter Pineo (a planter from 1760) and Elizabeth Samson (a Mayflower descendant) This portion of the family is very well documented with proofs already.

I hope that this helps people who may be working on sorting this convoluted family we call Pineo. Thanks for reading.

If anyone wants copies of the proof, or has any questions, by all means let me know what you need and I try to help.

Thanks for the comments Peter Lake and Kenn Bigelow. So this is the proven lineage of Daniel Pineo.

1) Peter Pineo and Elizabeth Samson
2) Daniel Pineo and Anne Bentley
3) Erastus Pineo and Prudence Beckwith
4) Daniel Pineo (had two wives)

1861 Census - not found
1871 census - not found
1881 Census of Canada - Dan (Pines) Pineo is a widow living with three children in Canning, which are supposedly by his first wife whom we do not know. Children are Fanny (1863), Prudence (1865) and Casie (1867); all born in Nova Scotia). What was the name of his first wife?

Between 1867 and 1881, his first wife dies as he remarries in Rockland, Plymouth, Ma, on 23 Jun 1887 to Mary J, Smith. He is aged 65 (born in Nova Scotia) and she is aged 54 (born in New Brunswick). His parents are given as Prudence Beckwith and his father as Erastus. I have a copy of this M/R. Unfortunately, her parents are not given.

1891 Census of Canada, Daniel Pineo is back living in Sheffield Mills, with his wife Mary and a 6 year old grandchild named Erle.

1901 Census of Canada - Daniel cannot be found. Has he passed on as he would have been age 80 in 1901.

This documentation I believe, proves that Daniel could not possibly have died at the age of one year old.

Thanks again for all the contributions to proving this. The Pineo family is huge and the records sometimes scarce.

This is speculation with very little proof.

There are a number of people who say that Olivia is the name of Dan's first wife. I have found an Olivia Anne Burleigh, born 18 April 1831 in New Hampshire; died in Centerville, June 18, 1867. She was the daughter of Winthrop Marston Burleigh and Sarah Guile. There do appear to be some records (border crossings, etc) that suggest that there may also be three additional children:
1) Inez Annie born abt 1854
2) George Erastus born Jan 14, 1855 in Ma.
3) Edna born abt 1860 in Centerville
4) Son Pineo, born Jan 30, 1852 in Ossipee, Carroll, NH (have Record) Child is not named.

Comments as always are welcome

Many Thanks

They say it takes a village.....well it seems there have been lots of folks contributing to this series of mysteries, and I thank you all (Eric, Ric, Peter and Ken) for your insight, information and proofs.

Just one comment about the "girls" Inez A Pineo on her M/R in NS is identified as Ivey and her husband as Patten instead of Patton.

It seems abundantly clear, at least in my mind that we can now add Olivia Anne Burleigh as the first wife of Daniel Pineo. Now on to the next project.
