I am looking for information on Lauchlin McDonald of Judique (born 1836 in Judique, died 1904 in Gloucester, Mass). Married Mary Jane Scott (b. 1836 in Oyster Pond, Guysborough). I believe Lauchlin's father might have been Alexander McDonald (b. 1812?).

Thanks for any help!

Dave Stewart

Hello Jane,

Haven't been successful in finding Michael's marriage record to Mary MacDonald. Prior to your post I was totally unaware of Michael's marriage to Catherine MacDouagall. I thought that Mary could have been named Mary Catherine and went by different names during the Censuses. Both Mary MacDonald and Catherine MacDougall were very close in age. The 1881 Census had Catherine listed as 30 years of age and the 1991 Census has Mary listed as 39 years of age.

Even though I have not yet found Mary and Michael's marriage record, his marriage record to Catherine MacDougall lists both his parents which is information that I did not have before your comments. So thank you very much as I have discover a new generation on this line. Do you have any additional info on Michael's parents? Had to ask!!

Peter

Further to your last post, I have found a litle more information. The 56th was organized at Camp Meigs, Readville, MA on 26 Dec 1863. The majority of volunteers to "C" Company professed prior service, although I have yet to confirm if this aplied to Michael. The Regiment engaged in the Battle of the Wilderness (6 May 1864), Spottsylvania (12 May 1864), and Spottsylvania Courthouse (18 May 1864) where McLean was ultimately wounded in the right forearm ending his military service. He was pensioned in June of 1865, and paid $18 per month. It would be interesting to find out how severe his injuries were and to what degree this might have affected his post-war life. Of course, the other important question to consider is what might have drawn McLean to Massachussetts in the first place: employment, the war, or, as a sailor, did he simply walk away from the ship he was crewing and join the war effort? I suppose we'll never know the answer to that one.
I would be happy to provide you with further info on my wife Theresa's connection to Michael, although it is a bit complicated. Feel free to contact me directly at Curtis_Mainville@hotmail.com.

I had been contentrating most of my efforts on the records of the Regular Army, hoping to match up one of the McLeans who served both before and during the American Civil War. More over, I had not considered that alternative spelling. I'll take a closer look at the records in question and let you know if I come up with anything else. Thanks.

Curt

Excellent news!!!!

Found info on Michael MacLean's service in the civil war.

Enlisted as a private in 56th Massachusetts Infantry (name wrote as Michael McClain) on 22 December 1863 at the age of 21. Was Discharged for wounds 22 Jan 1865 Washington, DC.

Another record pertaining to Civil War Pensions show that Michael McClain filed as an invalid on 28 January 1865. On 7 June 1904 his widow (Mary McClain) applied for his pension, which would indicate that he died shortly before hand. This date of death would be the reason Michael's record of death cannot be found; during a window of time (including 1904) no death records were kept by the Nova Scotia government. This is a big brick wall for a lot of people unfortunately.

I have just found these records tonight. The record for the 56th on Ancestry has a summary of the 56th, but also has links to narratives of all the battles fought by the 56th.

Hope this helps.

If anyone has any information on the descendants of Michael and Mary MacLean or further information on Michael, I would be very interested to hear from you.

As a side note for those interested in Michael's wife Mary MacDonald; her ancestors are traced pretty far back in A.D. MacDonald's book "Mabou Pioneers"

Peter MacDonald

Hi Peter,

I have found precious little since my last appeal for information. I have searched the census records for Michael's parents, John and Mary, but have yet to identify them through other than secondary sources. As for Michael, perhaps a trip to Port Hood might dig up additional details. I would very much like, for instance, to identify his date of death. I have gone through some American military records in the hope of identifying his unit, but have so far come up empty. Tracing this particular family remains rather difficult. Thanks, however, for your input. It is good to know that he has not been completely forgotten.

Curt

I have looked at that site a number of times for Michael MacLean but for some reason I had his wife listed as Mary MacDonald as in the book Mabou Pioneers on page 407 states that Mary MacDonald d/o "Domhnull Mac Ailain" married Michael "Saighdear" MacLean a solder of the Civil War.

Peter

Hello Curt,

I have just came across your post regarding Michael MacLean who is my 2G Grandfather. I have Census records for 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901. One of his sons John Ronald lived in my grand parent's (Peter Ronald and Bell (Basker) MacDonald) house in NewWaterford for a period of time. My uncle Garfield who currently lives in Toronto has passed along a few stories about John Ronald, but doesn't know much about his father aside from fighting in the US Civil War. I didn't realize that he served in the US Army for so long.

I see that your post was from some time ago and was just wondering if you still check it and whether or not you have come across anything regarding Michael MacLean's parents or any further information about Michael himself.

If anyone else reading this post has any information even about Michael MacLean or his descendants I would be very happy to hear from you.

Peter MacDonald

Looking for any information on the five McGregor boys who went from Pictou to Inverness. I believe their names were John, Duncan, Malcolm, James and Donald; they were the sons of Gregor McGregor and Isabell McDonald. They would have been born between 1769 and 1790. One of their descendents was a pastor in Amherst -- Reverend Donald MacGregor.

Thank you.

Hi, did a little searching for you and this is what I found.

John McInnis b. 1852, son of James and Catherine, married Annie McIntyre b. 1844, daughter of Archibald and Sarah McIntyre on 1 June 1874. Witness to the marriage were Donald McInnis and Dolly McIntyre.

Couldn't locate much info on James and Catherine McInnis but your grandfather was born 1884 and died 1960.

Archibald McIntyre was born 1803 in Scotland, wife Sarah b. 1811, PEI -- 1871 census living in Broad Cove:
-James
-Mary
-Donald
-Margaret
-Ann*
-Dolly
-Susy

John and Annie's marriage record and John James' death record can be seen on www.novascotiagenealogy.com

Hope this is somewhat helpful!!
MacInnis/McInnis

I am researching my paternal grandfather's lineage. This is what I know.
Two brother's came from Scotland, names: John MacInnis and Archie MacInnis.

John MacInnis was married to Annie MacIntyre of PEI. They lived in Kenloch, Inverness County, NS. They had 5 children who lived. John born 1876, Archie born 1878, Sarah Catherine born 1882, John James (my grandfather) born 1885, Mary Ann born 1888. The mother was blinded chasing the cows home when the children were young. Mary Ann was scalded accidently when mom was carrying water from the stove to a tub, as she was sitting on the floor as a baby. The mother died when Mary Ann was about 5 years old. Father John remarried, to who?????. My grandfather left home after the marriage at age 13 to work in Inverness mines. His eldest brother left home at 17 or 18????, went to the States and was never heard from again. Archie left home to work in Inverness Mines. Sarah Catherine and Mary Ann were brought up by some relatives. The new wife was horrible and didn't want the kids and that is why the boys all left. I have found a census from 1891, where they are all still a family with mom still alive. My grandfather was 6 that year. The place of residence was listed as Strathlorne on the census. My father has told me that their home was on Mountain Road in Kenloch. Archie married and had several children. Some of the names are Annie Bell, Josephine, Margaret, John Neilly, Frank and Dan Lochie who married Helen. Sarah Catherine, (Aunt Ceduk????gaelic for Catherine) married Hugh MacEachern of Mabou and had 3 boys. John Ral??, John Dougald, Alex Jim. John James my grandfather married Margaret Gillis and had 8 children and lived in the home of Dan MacEachern (Hugh's brother) in Mabou. My grandmother was brought up in that home by Dan's mother, Jane. The children: Annie Jane (Beaton) Mary Ann (Marie Holden) my father, John Donald, James Kerr, Alexander Archilbald, Donald Blaise, Angus Richard, Catherine. Grandson Dougald Carmel was also brought up by my grandfather and grandmother. Mary Anne married Angus MacIsaac of either Judique or Troy. Mary Ann had a child before their marriage, Annie May. They had John, Archie, Mary Lizzie, twins: Annie Margaret and Katy Margaret and Jim (Brant, Brent??? his nick name) They lived in Inverness.

Any information about the MacInnis's or McInnis's will be greatly appreciated. We spell our surname MacInnis, however the census of 1891 spell's my great grandfather's name as McInnis.

A new book of interest to descendants of Angus MacLean of the West River/Ohio area of Antigonish County. Many descendants with names such as MacDonald, MacInnis, and Chisholm left Antigonish for work in the mines of Pictou County. This book traces the deceased direct descendants of Angus and his two marriages. The book contains some pictures, 3 essays and a complete genealogy (192 pages). The cost is $20 plus S&H and is available from myself and the Antigonish Heritage Museum.
Marleen MacDonald-Hubley

Hello. I'm looking for information on Peter Googoo and Teresa Bernard and their parents, of Whycocomagh. I know that Peter Googoo and Teresa Bernard were married on 16 October 1921 in Sydney, NS at the Church of Sacred Heart. Marriage record was found at novascotiagenealogy.com https://novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=27-2... No birth or death dates though.

I'm also interested in tracing their parents. According to the marriage record, Peter's parents are Stephen Googoo and Mary Bernard, and Teresa's parents are Robert Bernard and ????? Silliboy/Sylliboy. Does anyone know their birth or death dates? Or who their parents were?

Hi Meredith,
Joseph Bobeck suggested I get in touch with you in regard to the Morrison family.
I believe his ancestor John A. Morrison is possibly a brother to Margaret Morrison who married Alexander Stewart and they would be my daughter-in-law's great-great grandparents.
If there is a connection to your Morrison line you can contact me at oldcrone@sympatico.ca
Pat Marshall
Stirling Ontario

Re: Donald "the Ridge" MacDonald of Mabou

Ray, let me see if this helps...This is the only reference to Hugh "the Ridge" MacDonald. Alexander "Alistair Rudh" MacDonald, married Mary Campbell of Glen Roy Lochaber, was the Family progenator who came from Lochaber Scotland in 1816 with their young adult and teenage children. They settled on "The ridge" in SW Mabou and were known as the "Ridge MacDonalds". His children included: Angus, Allan(the Poet b.1794), Donald, Mary, Catherine, Flora, Anne, Jessie, I believe all born in Scotland. Angus, (the eldest)married Mary MacPherson, daughter of Murdock MacPherson (pioneer of SW Mabou). They had Angus, Alexander, Allan, Archibald, Hugh, Alexander, Catherine, Jessie, Mary, Margaret and Anne. Hugh married Grace MacDonald, daughter of Donald MacDonald. They had; Angus, Alexander, Margaret, Angus, Donald, Archibald and Flora Anne. The last Donald MacDonald, married in Montana to Bessie Macdonald.
If this is the correct lineage, there is more....can you find any linkage here? Allan(the poet) was my gg grandfather and his son Donald was my G Grandfather.

You have found my son in law's family and I'm so delighted :)

My mistake was putting in Inverness county and limiting the choices ...
As you have no doubt discovered, zeroing in on a MacDonald family in Cape Breton is no easy task. Nova Scotia Vital Stats are available at
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca
This is a free site maintained by the Nova Scotia Provincial Archives. You may need to download a viewer program which is free onsite to see the actual record
I found one marriage between a May Macdonald and William Chisholm which looked promising as follows (May and Mary are pretty much interchangeable)
Cape Breton County Reg Year 1906, Book 1805, page 222 #245
May Macdonald is age 20(born 1886), spinster, born Broad Cove, dau of Ronald and May MacDonald. Witnesses are Hugh MacDonald and Julia MacDonald.
The other marriage I found is for a Simon MacDonald who married Margaret Squires in 1919
Cape Breton County Reg Year 1919, Book 25, page 546
He was age 23 (born 1896) in Dominion #1; son of Ronald MacDonald and Mary Macdonald. One of the witnesses was an Angus MacDonald. His father’s occupation was carpenter.
If this is the family it appears that in the 10 years between May’s birth and Simon’s birth the family had moved to the Industrial area of Cape Breton which makes sense if Ronald is a carpenter. With that in mind I checked the 1901 Census of industrial Cape Breton.

The 1901 and 1911 Census can be accessed free at
www.automatedgenealogy.ca
The family I found is living in Sydney, Cape Breton District Z-5, page 44, 1901 Census
Ranald Mcdonald, married, head, born November 1, 1840, occup-carpenter
Mary McDonald, wife, born 1855
Katie McDonald , daughter, born Sep 15, 1883
Flora J McDonald, daughter born May 1885
Mary McDonald, daughter born May 2, 1886
John D McDonald, son born Jan 19, 1889
Juliann McDonald daughter born Jul 19, 1891 (probably Juliann Belle)
Angus A. Mcdonald, son born Nov 8, 1893
Simon Mcdonald , son born Jan 25, 1896
Jane McDonald, daughter born Mar 25, 1898 (probably Jeannie)

Hope this helps
