I'd like to know more about my NS heritage. My grandfather was John Angus Gillis (aka Big John) (1871- 1921). I know from his 1921 death certificate that his father's name was Angus Gillis and his mother's maiden name was McDonald. He married my grandmother Ellen Cochrane Hughes Gillis in 1911 in Philadelphia PA. At the time of his death in 1921,they lived at 1527 Victoria Road Sydney NS with their 2 sons, Angus T Gillis (b 1912) and John A Gillis (b 1915 my father). They had lived earlier in Whycocomagh NS. I know that my grandfather John Angus had at least 2 sisters, Isabel Gillis and Mary Gillis. I have Isabel's death certificate and when she died in 1932 she was living in Margaree Harbour Inverness NS and her father was listed as Angus Gillis and her mother was listed as Isabel McFarlane. The death certificate indicates that Isabel was born in 1846 in Belle Cote NS. The informant on the 1932 death certificate was a Mrs Murdock McKinnon and a cousin of Isabel Gillis. I know less about the other sister (Mary Gillis) of my grandfather (John Angus Gillis) but I understand from land records that Mary Gillis was married to a Boyd at some point. Mary and Isabel lived together on land in Margaree Harbour for some period of time. Any help you can give me on finding out more about my Gillis heritage in Nova Scotia would be greatly appreciated.
