I've been researching my father's side of the family but cannot locate my grandfather, Placide Boudreau of Cheticamp. I know he married my grandmother Margaret White (nee Chafe) some time after 1915 and before 1920. They settled in Sydney N.S. and had children Doris, Louise, Tina, Edith, Gordon and William, all after 1920.

I've searched the 1911 and 1901 Census, several obituaries, but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1901 and 1911 Canadian Census is available online at
www.automatedgenealogy.com
The following family are listed in Inverness Co.,
#35, Cheticamp subdistrict B-1, page 10
I'll just list them briefly. You can look them up for more details yourself.
All Surname Boudreau:
Lubin, head, age 48
Henriette, wife, age 43
Marie, dau, age 18
Lazare, son, age 17
Luce, dau, age 15
Cletild dau, age 14
Charles, son, age 12
Placide, son age 7
Zabine, dau, age 6
Joseph, son, age 5
Colombe, dau, age 2

They are also listed on the 1911 Census still in Cheticamp with Placide now listed as 19 (ages can be a bit fluid on Census returns)

I checked the 1881 Census available at
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...
Lubain and Henriette Boudrot are living in Cheticamp with one child, Dominick, age 11 mos.
Hope this helps

BurdetteU: Thank you for your help. I had already discovered that record in the 1901 and 1911 Census. I struggle now with another record I found on Rootsweb that records a Placide Boudreau born 4 Nov 1896 in Cheticamp as the son of Placide Boudreau (1853) and Louise AuCoin (1853).I however, cannot locate Placide and Louise in the Census.

I continue to search.

Hi again,

Would have answered your question sooner had it been on the Boudreau message board. I just stumbled upon it today while looking through other boards. Hope the info helps.

By the way, I am told by friends from Cheticamp (who sent me the original info I posted) that the parish registers for that town have a gap in them during the early 1840s to mid-1850s, so Zephirin and Anastasie's marriage year of about 1847 will have to do. There is no exact date to be found for them. Zephirin was son of Charles Boudreau and Luce Aucoin. Also, there is no record from Whitney Pier in the NS Genealogy database online; I looked. But I am confident of their marriage there, as verified by Edmond Burns of Cheticamp's Trois Pignons (Societe St-Pierre), the local genealogy center there. Dennis

Dennis, thank you very much for your help with this, and for all the information you were able to provide. I know that my father was baptised at Whitney Pier (Sydney) in Holy Redeemer R.C. Church Dec. 1920. I have the original copy of a certificate of baptism given to my father in 1942 as a certifiction of original church records.

Placide Boudreau seems to be such a common name, and while I have tried to isolate my search to Cheticamp which on my grandmother Boudreau's death certificate he claims to have been from, I come up with Placide born 24 Dec 1853, another 4 Nov 1896, but can't locate the Placide you refer to born 2 May 1890.

Any clarification you can provide would be much appreciated, or even your help to point me in the right direction.

You probably didn't search the census thoroughly. But here's from Cheticamp (3rd section)), p 12 of the 1901 census:

20 97 Boudrot Theophile M Head M Mar 12 1863 38

21 97 Boudrot Rebecca F Wife M Jan 3 1867 34

22 97 Boudrot Anastasie F Daughter S Oct 8 1888 12

23 97 Boudrot Placide M Son S May 1 1890 10 <<<<<<<<<

24 97 Boudrot Joseph M Son S May 8 1891 9

25 97 Boudrot Elise F Daughter S Aug 8 1892 8

26 97 Boudrot Marguerite F Daughter S Feb 10 1895 6

27 97 Boudrot Hubert M Son S May 10 1896 4

28 97 Boudrot Domitilde F Daughter S Nov 16 1897 3

29 97 Boudrot Rose F Daughter S Jan 8 1900 1

Also, you said your father was born in 1920? Before Placide and Margaret were married in 1921???

Thank you so much Dennis. You've confirmed what I found in the 1901 Census about 2 days ago. I have been looking under Boudreau not "Boudrot". On the Certificate of Baptism that I have for my father Gordon Boudreau, it's spelt "Boudroit" so I've searched that variation, coming up empty each time. Just by fluke I tried Boudrot and was thrilld to discover a Theophile Boudreau who fathered a Placide!

As for the date of birth for Gordon, I can only go by the date recorded on the Certificate of Baptism from the Parish of the Holy Redeemer in Whitney Pier. December 20, 1920. The baptism took place on December 31, 1920. The certificate itself was dated March 28, 1942, your guess is as good as mine. If I could find the actual church records, this might become clearer.

Thank you again for your help with this.

No problem, Sheila.

I probably should have mentioned to look under the "original" spelling of our family surname BOUDROT, but I too have seen our surname spelled Boudroit as well as Boudreau and also Boudreault (in my own family records). Hope all this was helpful. You can probably also access the 1881 census for Theophile's info at the Mormon Church web site: www.familysearch.org/

Remember, the census records are close but not always on target as far as exact dates on anything. It is always better to go by the baptismal/marriage or burial records in the parish registers whenever available. These are the most exact source. You'll notice that the census says Placide was born on May 1st, while the registers say May 2nd. Regards, Dennis
