Furthermore, just so you know, the reason I posted to THIS thread is because responses were sent to me on THIS thread to my email from Ancestry rather than to the original thread. I wasn't LOOKING for this thread at all. I was assuming there was a problem with the Ancestry threads and was hoping you could guide me back to the original one we were discussing over the past day. But NOOOOOOOOO.

Herb, this is why I always end up having a problem with you. I asked you a perfectly civil question about what happened to the other thread, as I can't find it anymore and wanted to post more information. Instead I get a rude and smart ass comment from you. WHY do you do this? Why can't you just answer the question and then I would have gone back to the other thread.

But ya know what....I'm just going to keep whatever I find out to myself as no matter how pleasant a relationship I try to have with you, it always ends up curdling. Good luck in your researches.

That would be a shame.

Anyway, I'm checking with the folks in Little Compton about the Robert Crossman marriages and they say that unfortunately the only data they have on the records is the individuals names and dates of marriage. But you probably already know that.

"To recap, the grant includes a father, James Smith, and several of his sons, James, Jr, Charles, Lewis and a son-in-law, Geldart.

Hello List: I am wondering if anyone doing Miller research from the Shubenacadie , Stewiacke area might know of this family:

John Miller, b:?, d: bef 1868, married Isabella McLennan, b:? in Scotland, d: ?
Children that I know of:

Catherine/Katherine b: Mar 14, 1838 d:Oct 1, 1921 in Avondale, Hants Co. She married Joseph (Planet) and might have been married to a ? Hibbert/Hilbert. ( the only marriage for a Joseph Planet that I can find is in 1863, right time frame but states Catherine/Katherine was a widow Hibbert)Catherine was my gg-grandmother.

Mary Janeb:abt 1843 , d:Apr 22 1891 married George Thomas Bates

Jacob b:abt 1845, d:?, married a Maria Barbrick Nov 26 1869 in Shubenacadie.

I believe there was a daughter Margaret as Mary Jane and son George were living with Margaret at one time in the census, also there is a Margaret Miller d:@81 born in Shubenacadie that is buried with Mary Jane's son George in St. John's Cemetery (source: phone call to St. John's cemetery)
Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated..
Thanking you in advance...Sheila Tanner

I have a copy of the news article that Robert spoke to in that message.

I seem to recall that back in that period, all/most bonds were directed to Halifax so yes, they could have married most anywhere.

Liswell is probably a good correction for Wiswell.

I have a copy of the John Levi Miller genealogy.

Still don't have a connection to the Miller Elizabeth Burgess married but I do have an old note from a researcher no longer available. He was speaking to the possibility of non-related Miller's that says, "Early in Newport area there are, for example, Alexander Miller from NH at Truro NS 1765 who has descendants early at Newport; John Miller and George Miller, veterans of 84th Regiment and among Scots who were deeded lots on regimental land grant at Rawdon; and John Miller (your line), the origin of Miller creek." Perhaps that is where your Miller comes from.

Hi Steven.
Thanks for the reply.I was reviewing the Millers on the board and came across the posting by Robert Anthony on 1 May,2005.Are you familiar with this story of the Allisons,Hunters and Millers being shipwrecked on Sable Island and being brought into Halifax? This may be the reason that Samuel Miller m.Elizabeth Wiswell(Liswell)in Halifax.I believe that this was only a marriage bann, that is a document showing that they intended to marry. It appears that on the bottom that the minister that the bann was directed to was a Peters.I am not familiar with this name.So the actual marriage may have taken place in Hants county. There were Liswells in the Avondale area very early on.I have a William Liswell deed where he sold land to George Mosher ,registered 21 May,1803.It says on the oath of William Salter,I believe this was the father of George Burgess' wife Hannah Salter. So the Liswells were probably in Avondale area well before that.I believe it is called the Avon Peninsula now.I have William's wife signing as Bethiah.I have William A.Liswell giving half of his farm to his son William Jr. in 1810.His wife did not sign this.
These Allisons,Hunters and Millers may have been recruited in Halifax to come and work on the farms in the Mantua,Miller's Creek area.
Apparently the source for Samuel Miller m. Elizabeth Proctor is the Miller Genealogy by John Levi Miller.I believe I saw that at HWHS in Windsor.Proctor does not appear to be a Hants Co. name to me so maybe Samuel Miller did m. her before he came to Millers Creek. So my question is still who was the Miller that Elizabeth(Burgess)Miller married? The deeds I have are Burgess deeds and were transcribed by Charles Whitmore and are in a binder at HWHS.
I cannot acces the 1791-1792-1793 N.S. poll tax list, was there a Liswell on it?Can someone tell me where to find the list?
Bye for now,Frank

My first source for this Samuel Miller (married to Eleanor Wiswell) is the 1792 Poll Tax Rolls: Samuel Miller, Newport.

I have another source reference on Samuel from an unpublished genealogy by Stan Meeken called, "Meekins of Nova Scotia" 2002. I recall this to be a land deed partnered with his brother John Miller however, I can't look it up at the moment because the book is packed away some place from moving a short time ago. Not sure which of the many boxes it is in.

As for the marriage to Eleanor, there is a Marriage Bond dated 17 February 1773 between Samuel Miller, Batchelor, and Eleanor Wiswell, Spinster. David Wiswell was the witness. Novascotiagenealogy.com has the marriage recorded in Halifax, in the 1864-1930 Nova Scotia Marriage Register.

Let me say that I have no absolute proof that John (of Miller Creek) and Samuel are brothers, even though I have referenced them this way a couple of times now. I would love to prove this but all I have is a good deal of circumstantial evidence to support this. For that matter, I feel I have a family here, headed by William Miller (b. in Ireland and died by drowning in 1776. I believe William, possibly without a wife, came to Nova Scotia with 5 children, John (married Martha Patterson), Samuel (married Eleanor Wiswell), Mary Elizabeth (married James Densmore), Hannah (outcome unknown) and a 5th unnamed child.
I'm putting this out there in case someone is looking for these Churches.

The 1870 Oregon census for Portland (Multnomah County) has a 53 year old Rebecca Church born in Nova Scotia with a 27 year old Tapley Church, steamboat man born in Rhode Island and a 28 year old Rebecca Church born in Massachusetts. I can't tell if they are Rebecca's children or not. One would assume so, nothing indicates they are married, but the markings for father & mother of foreign birth are incorrect for them being siblings. Rebecca's works for her being Rebecca's daughter if her father was a U.S. citizen.

In the same family are listed 33 yo Henry and 27 yo Isiah Smith, and 29 yo Henry Roberts all steamboatmen born in Massachusetts.

These two groups live at the same address as my great-grandfather's brother, 23 yo Isaiah Smith and his wife 20 yo Hariette [Church] Smith born in Massachusetts. I believe Hariette is Rebecca's daughter. Although Isaiah Smith is listed as a laborer this must be a short term thing as he is a master mariner/captain most of his life. I also doubt the part about born in Massachusetts. His birth place varies from census to census. It is most likely he was born in Cheverie, Hants County as were all his siblings.

I have not pursued this Church family as my interest lies with the Smiths. I know nothing further about them.

Searching for Silas/Elias F McLellan, b 1822/1823, somewhere in Nova Scotia

I'm looking for information my G-g grandfather, Silas / Elias F. McLellan, born somewhere in Nova Scotia, Canada; the names and birth-marriage-death dates of any siblings Silas may have had; his parents names and their birth-marriage-death dates; both were born in Nova Scotia; the names and birth-marriage-death dates of any siblings they may have had; and the same for Silas' grandparents.

In 1822 / 23, Silas was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. The 1861 Census of Canada shows Silas living in Cumberland, Nova Scotia. He married Sarah Bent (b 22 Oct 1824 in Nova Scotia; d 25 Nov 1907, Los Angeles, California, USA), (best guesstimate, between Jan 1852 to Jan 1854) possibly in Amherst, Nova Scotia. They had 4 children, all allegedly born in Amherst, Nova Scotia: Ezra Wiggins McLellan (b 29 Aug 1854; d 28 Apr 1925; m Lizzie Augusta Read, 12 Mar 1879, San Jose, CA, USA); Fred Robert McLellan (b Apr 1856; d. ?, San Bernardino County, CA, USA; married Clara Haskell, 1878, San Jose, CA, USA); Bessie L. McLellan (b 21 Aug 1858; d 9 Apr 1937, Salinas, CA, USA; m Frank Morris, 1891), and Hedley Shafter McLellan (b 2 Jan 1861; d 29 Jan 1929, either in Los Angeles, CA, USA or Ottawa, Canada). Silas may have had a brother named George O. McLellan. Between 1864 and 1867, the entire McLellan family moved from Nova Scotia to San Jose, Santa Clara County, CA, USA.In the 1870 US Fed Census, Silas states both of his parents were born in Nova Scotia.

What little information I have comes primarily from brief notes I found written by my grandmother. Most of that information is confirmed on Ancestry.com. No matter which genealogy website I've gone to to try to learn more, I've thus far been unable to get beyond the information stated above. Thanks in advance for any additional information you might be able to provide.

Carol Withers
carol.withers@comcast.net

I am a 5 ggg-grandson of William Smith and Jane Griffith, but signed up on the board to look for more detail on Robert Holmes Smith, b. 1775 Newport, Hants, & Elizabeth Pineo, b. 1779, Cornwallis, Annapolis. They were married in Maitland, Hants, and lived there thereafter. I do need proof sources on Elizabeth Pineo (d. of David Pineo) and their son, Thomas Stuart Crow Smith, who was named after a good friend, Rev.
It's possible that I may have something for you.
This is from The Church Family p. 152-158 in John V. Duncanson's book 'Newport, Nova Scotia a Rhode Island Township':
Richard Church (1608-1668) from England to Boston to Plymouth, Ma. m. Elizabeth Warren (1616-1670) dau. of Richard Warren (1580-1628) one of the Mayflower passengers.

Joseph Church (1638-1710) m. Mary Tucker

John Church (1666-1756) r. Little Compton, RI
m. Rebecca _____
Edward Church (1706-1761) r. Little Compton, RI;
m. 2 Oct 1729 (1) Grace Shaw dau. of Israel Shaw and sister of Peter Shaw , grantee at Falmouth, NS
m. 3 May 1755 (2)Mary Southworth
Edward was a grantee at Falmouth, NS
It then lists children of Edward Church and more details about him. It seems he went to Windsor, NS although he originally had a grant in Newport, NS.

I don't see a Seth Church.
Thank you for the offer. I have a couple who seem to dissapear from Little Compton R.I. Newport Co. Actally there are two in the same line. Joseph and an unknown wife in 1710 who leave behind two children, then one of those(Joseph) has a Seth Church who deserts from Newport during the Rev. war in 1776. He had cousins named Seth of Charles of Freetown who went to NS. That's why I had to suspect he might have been a Loyalist. They are almost the same age too.

Province House is highly valued because it is Canada’s oldest legislative seat and is considered one of the finest examples of pure Palladian design applied to an institutional building in the country. Its symmetry, proportions, uniformity and order, inside and out, represent both the stability and strength of government and the harmony, prosperity and stately grandeur of the Georgian period.

Plans for Province House were discussed as early as the 1780s, however funding and demands for a new Government House put the project on hold until the early 1800s. Prior to this, the Legislative Council met at various locations in Halifax, including the old residence of the lieutenant governor. In 1811 an act was passed for the erecting of a new Province House and in August of that year the cornerstone was laid. This was the beginning of the first purpose-built legislative building in what would become Canada.

Local painter and glazer John Merrick has been widely credited with the design of Province House. He was no doubt strongly influenced by the British promoters of Palladian style, architects Robert and John Adam. However it was mason/master builder Richard Scott who deserved much of the credit for interpreting Merrick’s drawings and realizing the remarkable architectural achievement that is Province House. Scott led the team of carpenters, masons and labourers who worked on Province House for eight years.

The provincial Supreme Court was held in this building until the 1860s, in the room now occupied by the Legislative Library, and the Legislative Council also met here until it was abolished in 1928. Since its completion, Province House has also seen many historical events occur within its stately walls - important Supreme Court trials, including the famed libel trial of politician, activist and newspaper editor Joseph Howe and the establishment of the first Responsible Government in the entire British Commonwealth. Other significant events held here included an Industrial Exhibition, royal visits, the installation of lieutenant governors and governor generals; grand balls were not an uncommon site in the Red Chamber.

Made of sandstone quarried at Wallace, NS, the exterior of Province House has changed very little since 1819. The stone wall that surrounds the entire perimeter of the property is original to the site. However the two statues found in the north and south years are more recent additions: one commemorates the trial of Joseph Howe, created by famed Quebec sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert, in 1904 and the other commemorating Nova Scotians lost in the Boer War, erected in 1901.
Hello,

I'm interested in this family as well. My husband's grandmother was descended from this line, so I've been trying to gather as much information as I can. I've made it back as far as James Dalrymple (b. 1761 Ireland) married to Agnes Cochrane in 1787, but can't find anything further. Has anyone been able to locate James & family in Ireland?

Stephen Macumber b: 1807 in Kempt or Bramber

Who are the parents of Stephen Macomber b: 1806 who married Elizabeth Gray and died in Bramber, Hants Cty., NS? The choices must be fairly limited. There is a Stephen Macumber listed in the 1838 Census for Kempt Township? Kempt Township is proximate to Bramber. Bramber was part of Kempt at that time. This Stephen is likely to be the Stephen who married Elizabeth Gray. This Stephen had only two children by 1838 (one boy and one girl). This corresponds to the 1838 Census information. If this proves to be factual it also provides some clues as to the identity of the J. Macumber listed in the same Census.
This J. Macumber had 7 children (four boys, three girls) living in the household in the 1838 Kempt Census..
I am also looking for information on Elinor Eliza Trider. My grandfather was William Swinamer, son of Albert Swinamer. Albert's parents were George Swinamer and Elinor Eliza Trider. I believe the old spelling for Trider might have been "Treuter" . I have come across a Sophia Trider "Treuter" who was married on 11 oct., 1774 in Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg to a Thomas McDonald.
I don't know if Sophia has any connection to Elinor Eliza or not. Just thought it might be worth throwing out there.

Good hunting!

hey I think our Elinor Trider was probably born in 1818/1817. I have
hit a brick wall. How about you?
William was married to Allis (Alice) Ada Swinamer, b. September, 1892, Three Mile Plains, Hants Co., N.S; d. June 16, 1975, Three Mile
Plains, Hants Co., N.S. Alice was the d/o James Swinamer and Sarah Anne (Annie) Demont. This means William and Alice shared the same grandparents, George Swinamer and Elinor Trider.
Any information you could share with me on Elinor or the rest of the Swinamers would be greatly appreciated.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Lynn
