Hi Frank,

I was not able to find any Scott graves in Cambridge or Pembroke. I know where my great-grandmother is buried. She is buried in Lockhartville beside her husband and a few children. James Scott, John's brother, lived in Walton and he may be buried in town. That I have not checked those areas. His wife was named Mary and I found him and some of his children in the 1871 census in Walton.

James Scott born about 1819
Mary born about 1830
Eliza born about 1844 (married Francis Stillman on 2 APR 1873 in Newport and then a McDonald)
Isaac about 1851
Josephine about 1854
Ada about 1859
Andy about 1860
Joseph about 1869

With the names Joseph and Josephine it may be that Mary had a father or relative named Joseph. Mary was a very young bride. She appears as the wife of James in the 1844 deed. James being a younger son of James Gilmore Scott would explain why he did not show up on the 1838 census and proves that the James of the 1838 census with many children is James the father. As you may have seen on the earlier post, there was a Yarby or Yarber Scott living in the area and may have been another son of James Gilmore Scott or perhaps a brother. James had seven children and I only have names for two.

I am afraid that Goshen will be a very big disappointment. As I have found in other areas of Nova Scotia, logging can take precedence over history. The area has been abused for years and there is nothing left at all. I doubt if even a cellar hole could be located. I was able to go where I wanted but I have a Subaru outback. It is rough going at times so I would not suggest a regular auto. I went in from the Pembroke side and it is just a short distance to the top of the very small hill. If any of the Scotts were buried in Goshen, they are lost to us.

You wouldn't have happened to have taken any pictures while you were there, did you? Really of little genealogical use, but I would love to see where my ancestors lived. Someday I might make it to Nova Scotia, but will just have to live through pictures until then, if you have any.

Sorry Sarah, I didn't. I summer in Nova Scotia so I could next year. I would take pictures of Pembroke and Cambridge and Walton along the shore because that is looks most like what your ancestors would have seen. The hill of up Goshen road is just timber roads and yucky, messy leaving from a clear cutting operation. I would also just check on the web for pictures of that area.

The three names that come up most often for my family are Goshen, Kempt (which can really be any number of areas) and Newport (same problem as Kempt).

Benjamin Wade supposedly settled in Goshen, but the first evidence is a land grant given to his son, Joseph Wade http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/land/indexmaps/053.pdf and that Wade Lake still exists.

It was a narrowing down. Goshen was in the Township of Newport in the beginning. The county of Hants was created June 17, 1781, and consisted of the townships of Windsor, Falmouth and Newport. I believe it was in 1828, Kempt Township was formed because Newport was divided into smaller areas as more settlers moved in. So depending on the deed, Newport, Kempt and Goshen may be the same spot or area. To make it even more confusing, there is a Newport Center, and Kempt Shore which are villages. But Walton, Pembroke, Goshen and Cambridge were in Newport Township before 1828 and in Kempt Township after 1828. The people who lived in Goshen shopped, worked and went to church in Pembroke, Cambridge and Walton

Hi All.
I am searching for the second wife of John Gilmore Scott. It is reported that Edith Mosher said in some of her notes that her name was Emeline Trahan and she came from "across the bay". Edith Mosher in her book"North Along The Shore" on page 82 refers to the north shore,or the Cumberland and Colchester Co. shore as "Over the bay".On pg. 87 she also says "Hezekiah Brown emigrated first to Digby, then across the Bay to Tennecape. So in her own words Edith refers to the trip from Digby to the Hants Co. shore as "across the bay".When she says Emeline Trahan came from across the bay then she could very well have come from Digby Co. where members of the Trahan family were known to have lived.
Research by Sandy Andreassi has shown that someone listed Experience Wilcox as the maiden name of Owen Scott,s mother. His father was listed as John G. Scott.Research by Cheri Amarna has John Gilmore Scott as the son of James Gilmore Scott from Goshen,Hants Co.,N.S.James Gilmore Scott and Gardner Wilcox applied for and received grants in Goshen around 1808.Experience Wilcox would appear to be the daughter of Gardner Wilcox and Ann or Nancy Harvie, dau. of John and Experience (Powers)Harvie.
Page 34 of Edith Mosher's book mentions Douglas Harvie who was descended from Acadians. She says"One of the original Acadians,an ancestor of Mr. Harvies grandmother,is buried in an old graveyard on the Wilson Road in Lower Burlington. That man signed the oath of Allegiance and so was allowed to stay on his land".
Is there a connection between this Douglas Harvie and his ancestors and Ann or Nancy Harvie that married Gardner Wilcox? Is there a connection between his Acadian ancestors and Emeline Trahan and the Trahan family of Digby Co.
Is Wilson Road the same as Armitage Road?
Any help much appreciated.

Hi All.
The lot next to James Gilmore Scott in Goshen on the western side was granted to Abel Harvie and George Harvie.Leland Harvie in his Harvie Genealogy has #3A,George on page 222,son of John Harvie and Alice Wilcox m.23 Dec.1812 to Mary Mitchner b.1794 d.12 Oct.1821.The parents of Mary Mitchner are not listed but George and Mary's son is apparently Abel Harvie.John Duncanson does not list a dau. named Mary for Capt.Abel Michener in his book "Newport,Nova Scotia-A Rhode Island Township".Capt.Abel Michener is on page 313.Mary(Michener)Harvie dies and George m. Pamela Blackburn and has sons named Scott,George and Terrence and daus.Mary and Pamela Ann.
George and Mary(Mitchner)Harvie have a son named Abel who m. 16 Oct, 1840 Ruth Maria Marsters, dau. of Robert Marsters and Margaret Allen of Kempt Shore.Ref. Harvie Gen.They also have Andrew,Jane Alinda,Maria and Alice.
Abel and Ruth(Marsters)Harvie have a son Ezekial Knowlton Harvie who m. Laura P. Card, dau. of Charles Jeremiah Card and Margaret Skaling.
Ezekial and Laura(Card) Harvie have a son Albert DOUGLAS m.Myrtle Thomas, dau. of Charles Thomas and Mary Reynolds.
So the Douglas Harvie that Edith Mosher refers to has a grandmother named Ruth (Marsters)Harvie and one named Margaret(Skaling)Card.
Is there any record of one of them having an Acadian ancestor?
John Duncanson does say in his Newport book on page 313 that Capt. Abel Michener says that "he and Jeffers reported that they had given up their Newport farm and "pitched on land in the undivided"-at the Upper Village on the north side of the Cogmagun River".The grant map in the back of John Duncanson's Newport book shows lot A7 on the Cogmagun River in the names of Abel Michener and John Jeffers with no name on the next two lots downriver on the north side.
This is the area where Edith Mosher says the Acadian graves existed and I have heard that there are Acadian graves in the Sandyland Cemetary by the Cormagun River bridge on the Walton woods road.
The George Harvie that witnessed Deed # 12 would appear to be the George Harvie that m. Mary Michener, father of Abel Harvie.
Any help much appreciated.

Surnames: Fulton,Scott,Musselman(Muckelman)Withers,Shackelford,Cane(Caine),Young,Fitch,Mason,Sherman
Hi Cheri.
I found this Jn.o(Jonathan)Fulton on the 1817 Hants Co. census for Shore District. He was listed next to James Scott.
This Jonathan Fulton was prob. the son of James Fulton on the 1770 Amherst,N.S. census.James was shown with 4 boys and 3 girls, total of 9,Protestant,6 Irish and 3 born in America.I was wondering if Catherine, the wife of James Gilmore Scott was one of these daus. of James Fulton.
I found this interesting message # 456 on the "Musselman Family Genealogy Forum".
Sarah Jane Withers Shackelford(B.1848 in KY.)m.John Cane Musselman
The parents of Sarah Jane were William SCOTT YOUNG Shackelford and Sarah Jane Withers.
John Cane Musselmans's parents were David Musselman and Ann McGowan.
The 1770 Amherst census has a Robert Muckelman(Musselman) with 3 boys, total 5,4 Irish and 1 born in America.
There is also a Robert McGowan with 2 boys and 4 girls, total 8,Protestant,1 born in America and 7 Irish.
The twin daus. of Dr. Solomon Johnson Scott m. John Fitch and John Shackelford.
Ebenezer Fitch is on the 1770 Amherst census with 4 boys and 4 girls, total 10 all born in America.
This Muckelman may be the source of the name for the Benny Muckel Road in Bramber that leads into the Scott Crown Grant in Goshen.
The name Benny(Benjamin)may have come from Benjamin Mason. He may have been the son of Nathan or Nathaniel Mason in the 1770 Sackville,N.B.census.They were listed next to George Sherman.

Hi Cheri.
I made a quick trip to the Archives today.I found the reel on the Fort Lawrence District.
The PANS had it labeled reels number 12183 and 12184.It was labeled Beausejour Museum,Documents,Manuscripts and other material.Pos.1961.
I found "James Scott and Catherine Barry of the parish of Amherst were joined in marriage by lisence on the 9 day of June 1792 by Charles Dixon Esq.,Justice of the Peace &(Quorum?".
It would appear that this Catherine would be the dau. of Robert and Nancy(____)Berry.The 1770 Amherst census has Robert Berry with 2 boys,1 woman,3 girls for a total of 7.Seven are marked Protestant and they are all marked Irish.I believe Robert and Nancy Berry had another son after 1770 so Catherine may have been born after 1770 also.Robert Berry apparently died in 1781,five years before his sons came under the custody of John Stewart in 1786 according to info from Ginny Bergman.Ginny's ancestor Mary Scott married Thomas Berry who was prob. the brother of Catherine(Barry)Scott.Robert Berry's wife Nancy was remarried to William Hall on your Amherst deed # 12b where James Scott sold land to John Gay in 1798.Signed James Scott and Catherine Scott(named as his wife),witnessed by William Hall and Nancy Hall.
If Catherine did had a brother Thomas, this is the first reasonable lead that I have found for the naming of Mt.Thom in Goshen.
Bye for now,Frank
