ELIZABETH C. "BETSY" RINES b April 29, 1799 is my ggg grandmother. She married JOHN KENNEDY in Maitland, Hants Co Nova Scotia Canada. They and their children moved to Lubec, Washington Co Maine USA in about 1838, before the 1840 US census. ELIZABETH died after 1870 in Portland Cumberland Co Maine.

Much of the rest of the RINES family remained in Canada.

I have done extensive research on this Maine branch of the family. Here is a link to my online public tree here at Ancestry.com

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/38058264/family

The source of much of my information was an original letter written 1887 in Portland Maine by ELIZABETH's brother HENRY J RINES. The letter was sent to me by a descendant of HENRY's. Would be happy to share.

Hi Betty,

Thanks so much! Would love to check out the tree, but apparently you need a (non-free) Ancestry.com account to view it. I'm not at the point where I'm subscribing, so although I'm using a lot of the info on the (free) message boards to bolster my family history, it's all getting inputted into wikitree as open source.

Betty I take that back about Truro. I checked my records and where I did find him was in the London, England Baptismal records 1535 to 1812 and when you put in John Rines or Raines he comes up as being born in 11 Nov 1714 St Dunston All Saints, Stepney, Middlesex, England as the s/o Budwine and Elizabeth Rines.
I went through all of the John's and that is the only one with the possible birth date!!
I do know that my grandmother knew her Grandmother Prudence Rines/Raines and Meme was a stickler for finding history on her family and she told us all of families came from England with the exception of Patrick MacDonald who came from Scotland and went to Ireland with the McLean's because of the uprising there.

Aren't you Dot from New hampshire? If so, we have corresponded before.

I'll have to check into the English baptismal record. There could have been more than one "John Rines or Raines". And there is no historical reference to JOHN of Maitland Nova Scotia being from London. All the historical references that I have found from Maitland, Nova Scotia, Canada indicate JOHN was from Corn Hill (near Truro), Barnstable Co Massachusetts, and that he was conscripted into the army to help with the removal of the Acadians in 1755. There was a RINES/RANES family that lived in that area of Massachusetts previous to 1755.

"Rev T C Jack reported that John RANES from Cornhill, Mass. was the 1st settler in the Maitland Village area after the french had left (1755). He states that RANES was the ancestor of all who bear the name RHINES/ RINES in East Hants. His home was on a knoll 'just this side of the Foundry site.' It was built over an old French cellar."
Source: Website of Dan & Michelle Hill, also Duncanson book.

"France was the first foreign nation to colonize the land; they called it Acadia. The Acadians settled here into a quiet farming life on the fertile lands around, planting fruit trees and building dykes. Some of these dykes can still be seen today.
"The first settler in the surroundings of Maitland after the expulsion of the Acadians (1755) was JOHN RANES (later called Rines) from Mass. His first house was on this side of the foundry site, built over an old French cellar. Later he built another house opposite the 'spring'. "

Hope this helps!
