Hi Dianne,
My Great Grandmother was Emily Jane born Apr. 10, 1846 in Nova Scotia. She was the younger sister of your Great Grandmother Emma, born Aug 21st 1830 & baptised in St Pancreas, London. This was before her father Edward Billing & 1st wife Maria (nee Gohegan) moved the family to Halifax. Emma married Rev. John Brewster on June 15th 1850 in the Wesleyan Chapel, Brunswick Street, Halifax (He age 28, she age 19) The 1881 Census showed he living as a widow age 50 at 93 Gowthorpe Street, Selby. No one else in the house. Emma died age 85 on Feb 16th, 1916.
It is very sad that you were unable to make contact with Dennis Brewster in England before he died last year. Dennis & I did some joint research into both families. His father was Theodore Frederick Brewster (1893-1989) & Gt. Grandfather Frederick William Brewster(1857-1952). I will send you a photo supposed to show John Edward Brewster with Emma Brewster & Emily Jane taken in Stoke Newington about 1885. My email address is davidholl@btinternet.com
Regards,
David
Hi David,

I just came across your message board and wanted to let you know that your ancestor, Edward Billing of Halifax, was also my gr-gr-gr grandfather. I believe that then means that we have a cousin connection of sorts...

I descend from Edward through his daughter, Emma, who married the Rev. John Brewster of Newfoundland at the Wesleyan Methodist Church on Brunswick St, Halifax in 1850.

I have been able to trace some details of their son, John Edward Brewster (my gr-grandfather), on down to me, but I have been having some trouble tracing the Billing / Brewster family histories back in NF and NS and beyond - records seem scarce and/or hard to locate - or, maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

So, I am wondering if you can help me to find out more information about my ancestors in eastern Canada. Also, let me know if there is any information that you might be wanting from me to add to your family tree through the Emma Billing branch of it.

Ta, Dianne

WHITE family Fall River/Windsor Jundtion area 1840s - 1850s

I am looking for information on an Irish WHITE family in Fall River or Windsor Junction area of Halifax County in the 1840s or 1850s.

My great great grandmother was Joanna [Ann] WHITE born ca 1833 in Ireland. She married Thomas HOLLAND ca 1852- 1853 and they had the following children:
Mary 1854 [my great grandmother]
Martha 1857
Thomas 1860
Charles Francis 1863
Annie 1867
John Edward 1870.

On the 1871 census they are living in Fall River, in 1881 in Barney's River, Pictou County - Thomas is now a lumberman. I do not have the 1861 census.

I do not have a marriage record for Thomas & Joanna, so do not know her father's name. Thomas's family were Protestants, but in 1871 & 1881 his & Joanna's family were listed as Roman Catholics, so I presume he converted in order to marry.

Does anyone have any knowledge of an Irish family in the area? I do not know when Joanna came to Canada or whether it was with family or on her own.

All help gratefully accepted. Many thanks.

Hello, helping a friend and looking for information on the Shanks family of Halifax.
Edward Shanks was born about 1832 and is listed as a Teamster on the 1881 census. His wife was Mary Ann and also born around that time. They had Edward, Albert, Elizabeth, William George and Joseph. Does anyone know if this Edward is the son of James Shanks, shoemaker, who was the only Shanks in the area listed on the 1838 census?

As far as I know, all discharge papers are at the Public Records Office in Kew, London. Those for discharges before 1855 have been filmed by the LDS & are available to borrow for a small fee at a FHC.

Depending on when the discharge was, the papers are filed either by date of discharge or by regiment or alphabetically. See the National Archives info sheet at
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/?WT....
and for officers:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step...
for other ramks
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step...

Hope this helps, Josey

Hi Bryan,

I see you've been searching on your Edwards and Murley grandparents for quite some time.

Do you know what rank your grandfather Edwards had in the British Army? It can be difficult to find out anything in the case of a private (I know from experience in the case of my own grandfather). There is a much better chance if he was an officer.

I'm mainly writing because I was intrigued by the Murley connection. I gather from other posts I have seen that you think Alice Maude was d/o Thomas Murley and Sarah Pike, of Bay of Islands, Newfoundland. I think it is possible that Alice had a sister Lillian E Murley who married Thomas A Shortt of Dartmouth / Halifax. This Thomas Shortt had a sister Mabel who married my great-grandfather Robert Henry Edwards (this was an Edwards family of Scottish descent, rather than your Welsh Edwards); it was RH Edwards' second marriage. I know a grandson in Halifax of Thomas Shortt and Lillian Murley.

Some of the connections above are in my genealogy pages at http://www.cordes.ca/genealogy/ . Feel free to write to me at the address available there.

Regards,
John Cordes
Halifax

Many thanks for the info. That is a intriguing. My paternal great grandfather travelled to Gibraltar, Bermuda and India too, but that is not surprising since it sounds like he and your ancestor were in the Royal Garrison Artillery together. They must have been close friends of my great grandparents to be the witnesses at your ancestors' wedding.

I have my own genealogy family site at: http://genealogy.erzz.com/

where you can see a photo of my great grandma as an old woman living in Berwick on Tweed, England. I have no photo of the great grandfather. There is also a copy of the marriage certificate.

It is at:

http://genealogy.erzz.com//mediaviewer.php?mid=M12

Double click on the image to make it big enough to read.

You register with the site if you like.

My great grandfather George Harry Erswell (a Sgt Major) and great grandmother Emma Harris had the following children in the following locations. My grandfather Harry Walter Erswell was born in Bermuda 26 November 1879--he was career army too. Laura was born in 1882 in Gibraltar. Frances Annette was born in 1885 in Woolwich, London. Alice was born but died at birth in 1887 in Gibraltar. Emma was born in 1889 in Berwick on Tweed, England. Godfrey was born but died at birth in 1890 in Berwick on Tweed. Charles Godfrey was born in 1892 --probably Berwick. Mabel was born in 1893 probably in Berwick.

It appears that family left the army sometime between 1887 and 1889 to settle in Berwick on Tweed. The family became publicans owning several pubs in Berwick.

George Harry died in 1910 in Berwick. Emma survived him and lived into her 90s living in Berwick.

I don't know anything about where George Harry served in India. If your ancestor was in West Bengal, it seems possible that George and Emma would have served there too since they were in both the Royal Garrison Artillery and were obviously close friends.

Searching for Silas/Elias F McLellan, b 1822/1823, somewhere in Nova Scotia

I'm looking for information my G-g grandfather, Silas / Elias F. McLellan, born somewhere in Nova Scotia, Canada; the names and birth-marriage-death dates of any siblings Silas may have had; his parents names and their birth-marriage-death dates; both were born in Nova Scotia; the names and birth-marriage-death dates of any siblings they may have had; and the same for Silas' grandparents.

In 1822 / 23, Silas was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. The 1861 Census of Canada shows Silas living in Cumberland, Nova Scotia. He married Sarah Bent (b 22 Oct 1824 in Nova Scotia; d 25 Nov 1907, Los Angeles, California, USA), (best guesstimate, between Jan 1852 to Jan 1854) possibly in Amherst, Nova Scotia. They had 4 children, all allegedly born in Amherst, Nova Scotia: Ezra Wiggins McLellan (b 29 Aug 1854; d 28 Apr 1925; m Lizzie Augusta Read, 12 Mar 1879, San Jose, CA, USA); Fred Robert McLellan (b Apr 1856; d. ?, San Bernardino County, CA, USA; married Clara Haskell, 1878, San Jose, CA, USA); Bessie L. McLellan (b 21 Aug 1858; d 9 Apr 1937, Salinas, CA, USA; m Frank Morris, 1891), and Hedley Shafter McLellan (b 2 Jan 1861; d 29 Jan 1929, either in Los Angeles, CA, USA or Ottawa, Canada). Silas may have had a brother named George O. McLellan. Between 1864 and 1867, the entire McLellan family moved from Nova Scotia to San Jose, Santa Clara County, CA, USA.In the 1870 US Fed Census, Silas states both of his parents were born in Nova Scotia.

What little information I have comes primarily from brief notes I found written by my grandmother. Most of that information is confirmed on Ancestry.com. No matter which genealogy website I've gone to to try to learn more, I've thus far been unable to get beyond the information stated above. Thanks in advance for any additional information you might be able to provide.

Carol Withers
carol.withers@comcast.net

Since my last post I have been sent by a kind poster on nsroots the 1871 census entry Thomas Holland 46, wife Ann 38 & children Mary 17, Martha 14, Thomas 10, Charles 8, Annie 4 & John Edward 8 mo in Windsor Road. Then in 1881 they are in Barney's River, Pictou; Mary [married 1876]& Martha have left home.

William [Thomas' father] was married to a Martha. He was born 1788 in Luddenden, Yorkshire, England & died 1858. Martha was born in 1790 & died in 1839. William married a second time in 1852 to Margaret Irving. William's parents were James 1755 - 1818 born Midgely [near Luddenden, both near Halifax, Yorkshire] & Susannah 1760 who also had James 1767 & Betty 1795.

Does this resonate with anyone's research?

Hello Basil,
I missed this message and I'm sorry for the delayed response. My mother used to talk about your gr grandmother being one of the funniest people she ever met. She also remembered her taking her by the hand and walking her to the cemetary to visit my grandmother's grave to leave flowers. She was very supportive after her sister's death.
Laura was her favorite Aunt and she once told me that she would sometimes tell the odd dirty joke and that she was very mischievous and had a great laugh.
It was so thoughtful of you to respond and I hope you forgive the delay .
I was very intrigued to find this post. My ancestor was a British soldier from Hertford, Herts in the Royal Regiment of Artillery named James Watson. In May of 1878 he too married a local girl in Halifax named Ellen McDonald. On the Nova Scotia gen website for their marriage the witnesses are George Erswell & Emma Harris.
James went from Halifax to Gibraltar then to India before returning to Hertfordshire by 1901.

I think you forwarded this to me in error but I think the Regiment you are referring to is what after the late 1800's became the Wiltshire Regiment.

Certainly www.novascotiagenealogy.com
name search Watson, James year 1878. You will have to download the viewer to see it. I found this only seems to work with Internet Explorer.
Year 1878, book 1816 page 245 #412 Mcdonald/Watson

Mhow,Madyha Pradesh is correct, not sure where I got West Bengal from. Mhow was at one time one of the largest British Military establishments on the continent. On census records (1901) for the birthplace of the children 1887-91 it was identified as Central Mhow, India. James Regiment was the Royal Artillery, they have a museum at Woolwich and a website www.firepower.org.uk. They undertake research for a fee. There were many British Regiments stationed at the Royal Garrison in Halifax the R.A was just one.

Thank you for this. It's always interesting to find tid-bits of information that gives us insight into the lives of our ancestors. James & Ellen were my great-grandparents. I wonder now since George was stationed in the same places as James if he was in Bermuda 1878-1883. I have yet to discover where he went in this period. A child was born in Gibraltar in 1883 and two others in Mhow, West Bengal after 1887.
Thank you

I think these people were my grandparents. Did they live on Stairs Street? I am the daughter of their daughter Alice, who died in 1995. I am currently researching the Halifiax Explosion for a short story about my mother's memories of that day.
Cheers!
Beth

Hi Rosanna:

With respect to your message of Feb. 26 2004 I am curious if you have found any new information on William J. Hefler and Luticia Arthur and their family. The only William Hefler/Heffler that I have that comes close in age is a William Hefler b. June 8 1883 married Lora Shoughrow. William dies August 11 1970 in Los Angeles County, CA and Lora died Feb 21 1943 Ventura, CA. They had Evely, and Lyndon. All the other Williams are born too early, too late or the right time but die as infants.

I hope to hear from you
