I can find only info of her in the census as being Simon's wife and I have seen her death registration as Martha E L MacMillan wife of Capt Giffin. Any info would be great.

June Giffin-Martin

I am trying to find information on my father Raymond who was born to Elsie (Richard) and John McLaughlin. I found her and John McLaughlin on the 1930 Census and they had 2 children, Robt (which I assume is Robert) who was 3 1/2 and Jean who was 2. My father was born May 1933. I have confirmation that Elsie divorced John and married Jeremiah Reardon in Jan. 1938. My father (Raymond) was given up to the state and I can not find any information on Robert. Can anyone tell me the story of where Robert went and why Elsie had my father become a ward of the state. He would have been 3 at the time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi all! I am researching my children's family tree, having spent years on my own. My husband is a George from Canso and one of his ancestors is the 'other' David (Alexander) Greencorn I see mentioned in this thread. He married Alevia (aka Eva, Levia, and Olivia) Catherine Snow on Oct 29 1900. They had at least 6 children I have confirmed, with a 7th in question, one of these being the Margaret Greencorn who wed Alfred Rhynold. My husband is descended from David's daughter Hilda May Greencorn and her husband Wallace Roberts. I am currently seeking David Alexander Greencorn's parents. I have his marriage records, listing his parents as "John & Bella", however I have not been able to locate them. Anyone know this family line? Thanks, Allison

Hi, thank you for responding to my query. I believe that the John & Amy you are referring to are John Myers and Amy McMillan. On both of Stephen's marriage records, his parents are listed as John Myers and Marg. Johnston. His first wife, Emma Amy Latham, died about 1880 and he remarried a Carolyn Strople. However, on his death record his son, George, indicated that Stephen's parents were Henry Myers and Louisa Cook???

William Henry Myers who was married to Maggie Richardson, and then to Mary Emma Clyburn is my ggrandfather -- my grandmother was a daughter of William & Emma.

I am not sure where to look next????

I don't know if the Myers from Guysborough were related to the Myers from Stormont area, but I have found this:
The 1817 census has only one Myers for the Stormont/Isaac's Harbour area - John Myers, with a wife and four sons.
By 1861, there are 6 Myers: 3 Johns, George, Charles and Henry.
On the 1871 census shows a John Myers, age 60, who was born on Sable Island, with wife Mary and son David, living next door to Stephen and Amy.
The 1881 census has 75 year old Polly Myers (Polly is a nickname for Mary) living with John and Amy Myers - John is probably a mistake and should be Stephen.
I think Stephen Myers parents must have been John and Mary Myers. The Myers family is connected extensively to the Cook family, who I have researched thoroughly.

Hi, just looking around as well. In the 1910 US census for Essex, Massachusetts, there is a listing for an Edmund Mcuroe and daughter Alecta. I believe that this may be the ones you are looking for although the name is spelled incorrectly. They are living with a family named Tinker. There is no mention of Edmund's wife although the census indicates that he was married.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

I am looking for siblings of my G G Grandpa Aquila Bright born May 12, 1819 in Sadsbury Twp, Crawford Co PA. He moved to Wi , Il and ended up in MN. It was told that his father, A Dutch Sailor brought him a skep of bees from Holland. Thus starting a century long bee business. He supposedly loaded the bees in an ox cart and came to Mazeppa, MN about 1860. We've been told there were several siblings and the parents names were Harmon Bright and Sarah Kean.

Some good info on origin of most german troops within the 60th can be found on the family genealogy page for John Casper Rheinhold, of the 60th (see the notes section). Mentioned in detail is info on how 2000 Germans were recruited by Colonel George Henrich Albrect von Scheither in 1775 & 1776 for service in regular British regiments to include 193 for the 60th (batt 3/4). The JSHA -- Johannes Schwalm Historical Association has an ongoing project to indentify these troops, many if not most of whom ended up in the Regiments sent to Canada. Historian Don N. Hagist has studied the 22d Regiment of Foot in great detail and has identified the 40 von Schiether recruits assigned to that regiment (to include a Myer). You can find the list online as well. Some other British Regiments receiving von Scheither recruits were the 10th (76 recruits),16th
(127 recruits), 29th (51), 33d (101), 34th (138), 35th (40), 38th (40),44th (60), 53d (137), 3d & 4th Bns 60th (193), and the 62d (106). Possible you may find some info here. Good Luck.
Hi all, my relative alexander corner was with the 60th regiment receiving a land grant in guysborough. He was not likely a soldier but a 10-16 year old accompanying the regiment (probably with Sgt. John Gunn). Have traced family since then to Sheet Harbor but have not been able to trace back to Scotland (most likely Caithness) via his history with 60th regiment during the war. Does anybody have info on where their ancestors with the 60th were recruited at either in the states (i.e Pennsylvania) or England/Scotland? thanks much.

Hi, thank you. Yes, I believe that Charles, Ferdinand and George were with the 60th regiment. Jacob Myers served with the Kings Carolina Rangers along with Joel Hudson, David Johnston, Jacob Fenton, James Clyburn, to name a few. Since these men were granted land in 1784 in Country Harbour, I was wondering whether Stephen Myers could be related to Jacob and whether anyone has info on Jacob Myers???

Hi, this may old info for you, but George, Charles and Ferdinand were all members of the 60th regiment of foot that received land grants at Guysborough. They show up on the rolls of Christ Church in 1804. The 1817 for nova scotia census shows additional Myers and their locations. From what i read on a post, George Myers ended up in Cole Harbor eventually. Anyway, it seems that these three are related and might have been loyalists recruited specifically for the regiment, maybe from Penn, as german regiments didn't receive grants (i think)...hope this helps...

The reason I replied 1901 to 1907 is because I believe Ruth is referred to as Mrs. John Smith in the 1907 List of Occupations and next to her is John Smith, son of Widow Mrs. John Smith in Pictou Co.
http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/directory/
----------------------------------------------------
I see John Jr. got married in 1903 to Hannah and then moves on somewhere. You may think about putting a query in the Pictou Board because that is where he was in the 1881 Census,Merigomish, and where his family grew up. Might help in the future. I see Ruth passed away in 1930.
The Pictou Co. newspaper would have had an article on the accident but I couldn't find any sign.
Good Luck.

I'm not researching your family, but I've had a look to see if I could help. I agree with your findings regards her parents. Edmund and Julia were married Sat.,June 13, 1896.
In the 1881 Census, David(43) and Beline(40) (Belinda) have nine children, all boys listed.
In the 1901 Census, I agree it is difficult to see Electa's first name, but it has been transcribed as Lettie in that Census.
I couldn't find her in the 1911 Census, and checked some of her Uncles Families to see if she was with them but I did find her in the US 1920 Census, in Melrose, Middlesex, Mass.
Looked in the Cemetery listings for Edmund and no luck.
Keep looking, and some day a relative in Guysborough will see your posting.

You can find out quite a bit about this person online. Nova Scotia Provincial Archives maintains a free, searchable website where records to the early 1900’s can be viewed.
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca
You probably will need to download a viewer program which is free onsite to see the actual record.

I just did a quick search and came up with the following:

The birth certificate of Reuben Osborne Sponagle born 1905 in Goldboro, Guysborough Co. son of Alfred L Sponagle and Susan A Druce

Marriage certificates for his marriage to Annie O’Martin in 1931 who died young and his marriage as a widower in 1936 to Catherine Fraser Baird

Marriage record of his parents Alfred Lorenzo Sponagle (mis-transcribed as Albert in this particular record so watch for that when you are searching) and Susan Druce in 1896.

I’m sure that you can find much more information there with a bit more searching

The 1881 Census is available free at
www.familysearch.org

The 1901 and 1911 Census are available at
www.automatedgenealogy.ca

If you have any problem accessing the above sites, let me know
Happy Hunting
Burdette
My grandmother was Alecta Pearl Munroe, born in 1897 in Nova Scotia. My understanding was that she was orphaned at a young age and that she was taken in by another family. She went to nursing school in Massachusetts and eventually met and married my grandfather, ending up in Albany, NY.

I know very very little about her family, but on her marriage and death records, her parents are listed as Edward H and Julia V Munroe. I found some info on Ancestry.com for Edmund (parents David/Belina) and Julia (parents Thomas/Mary Ann) of Guysborough and a lot of the information seems to fit fairly well.

The 1901 census shows Edmond and Julia with a daughter named Leslie, but the page is hard to read due to a crease in the paper and I'm wondering if it's saying Lettie instead.

The family seems to disappear from the census after that and I haven't been able to find any more on the Nova Scotia site either.

Does anyone have information on the family, and what might have been the circumstances of my great grandparents' death? In our family, I've been told that they died in a hotel fire and that they were somehow involved with the Congregationalist Church (or maybe that someone in that church adopted my grandmother).

I appreciate any information that anyone might have.
Susan

I am very pleased that you have responded with additional information regarding the Sceles and Greencorn families. I would appreciate it if you would share any additional information that you may have regarding birth, marriage, and death dates of the Thomas Sceles and Phoebe West family descendants. As you are probably well aware, genealogical information regarding the Sceles and Greencorn families is extremely difficult to find and/or prove unless you have information that has been passed down within the family records. The information that you provided regarding a marriage between David Sceles and Margaret Greencorn (b. abt. 1825) was new information for me. Now I am wondering who Margaret's parents were. I cannot find Margaret in my Greencorn genealogy records. I also have a record of a Robert Henry Sceles (s/o Thomas and Phoebe that you have married to Mary Jane Eaton being married to an Elizabeth Hurst on 6 Dec 1831 in Guysborough. (???) I also have his brother John Sceles being married to a Mary Lamb on 5 Oct 1825. Please check your records help me get these records corrected. Again thank you for your response. It is truly a pleasure to hear from another descendent of these families.
I did go to college (Northeastern University) in the Boston area circa 1973-77 while I was working at Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation.

Robert Sceles was married to Mary Jane Eaton, daughter of Theophilus Eaton and Mary Sceles. Robert and Mary Jane are believed to have been first cousins. Robert is believed to have been born out of wedock to a Sal Anderson. The father was one of Mary Sceles' brothers. Robert was mostly raised by his paternal grandparents, Thomas Sceles and Phobe West.

I do have a Greencorn in my tree. Margaret Greencorn (b. 1825) was married to David Sceles (b. 1812) another son of Thomas Sceles and Phoebe West.

Thomas Sceles and Phoebe West were my gggg grandparents, through my maternal grandmother, Rose Sceles.

On another subject, your name is very familiar to me. Were you ever associated with MIT and/or Ithiel Pool?
Mcgelvery from Guysborough, Nova Scotia, Canada

The Mcgelvery family emigrated from Scotland. Their name spelling has been seen as McGelvery,McGillvery, McGilvery, and ultimately McGilvray. See the McGilvray public tree.

Duncan Mcgelvery, son of Hugh Mcgelvery and Isabella Mcgelvery, emmigrated from Guysborough to Boston, MA. Duncan married Catherine McDonald in Boston. They had several children. The oldest child, Daniel William McGelvery, the oldest, born in Boston married Grace V. Glancey. They were the parents of Donald William McGilvray of Quincy. Grace Glancey's family came from Nova Scotia, but originated in the Alsacian region of France. Their surname I understand was originally "De Lancey."

Any others connected to these families?
