Gideon Hemeon would have been my great uncle. I don't know too much about all of the children but George was drowned and had several children. I knew them all and went to school with some of them but in their teens they moved to the USA. Some are still living. I knew Henry and Sarah but I do not know where their children are. I knew some of them at one time. I think Gideon's wife Jane was a Matthews.

I have been reading some geneology re Christian Schweinsberger and also Hemeons. I was a Swansburg and my grandmother Swansburg was a Hemeon. Her father's name was Gideon. Grandmother Hannah Margaret was born in 1856. I was interested in what her mother's maiden name may have been and who her grandparents were. I thought the Hemeons had come from England but maybe I am wrong. I thought the first Hemeon in Little Harbour, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia was named Henry. ?????

I don't know his father, but here are some possibles:

1) William Murray

2) George Murray (oldest son was George William Murray)

3) Robert Murray (second oldest son was Robert Parker Murray)

4) Charles Murray (youngest son was Charles Tupper Murray)

...probably in that order. I found a baptism record from England that matches the same birth date for Ellis WILLIAM Murray (emphasis on William!) on Dec 20, 1829--a birth date given in his elderly age. The census records indicate he came to Canada (probably directly to Halifax, NS) when he was @ 2 yrs old.

The English Dec 20, 1829 record names his parents as William Murray and Mary Sheradon.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JMQW-2M4

Is this him or a coincidence? I don't know.

Finally, Ellis WILLIAM Murray was a Baptist for most of his life (married in Baptist church in Halifax), and the record above is from a non conformist record in England. Here is another copy of the record stating it as non conformist:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F346-KLG

He is not the William Murray, brother of the Religious writer, journalist and editor, Robert Murray of Halifax, NS.

Re: MARTIN from St. John's died in Halifax

Yes, this was the father who became a successful farmer in the White Hills. Thomas may have come as a servant to a military man who later found religion and started the Dissenting Church of Christ in St. John's. He was a prolific producer of kids as he and Mary had eleven.

The three son's of Thomas were born in the White Hills/Quidi Vidi/St. John's area. Typically the people in the Royal Newfoundland Companies (RNC) and RA (Royal Artillery) were often soldiers from Great Britain.

Thomas Junior died in the White Hills 1883. He married Ann(e) Murren. I have found only one baptism (son Robert) recorded with the occupation of the father Thomas. The father was listed as a fisherman.
The second brother Henry who married Grace Gallop was likewise listed as a fisherman. He died 1861.

So whither "whent" John and why so to speak? I can find absolutely n'ar clue as to his whereabouts or a marriage or any kids or anything. The newspaper clipping for the death notice mentioned a family to mourn the loss.

One of the daughters of Thomas Martin (Mary Jane) married a Hennebury and one of their issue is the link to my family ties.

My direct Martin roots are from Harbour Grace but originally from Jersey and Guernsey. However, I have basically given myself the challenge to sort out the Protestant Martin lines. Those MARTINS in and from St. John's are numerous and challenging but after a nine year struggle and 20,000 in my main database and 24 separate Martin folders waiting to be tied in with families all over the island I am making headway.

John is a loose end that I want to resolve.

There may be nothing more in the original Halifax announcement but I would dearly love to see what was printed.

Thank you for your part in this epic challenge.

My prey are most decidedly Protestant. Could be Congregational or Anglican. I know that Hannah and family moved over to Halifax. I can find nothing on her older brother John born circa 1796 in the St. John's records. Of the 11 children in this family John is the only one I can't track. The HG Standard death notice from November 1879 is the glimmer of hope for the man I seek and I am groping that there is the connection with Hannah.

I suspect that John who married Fennesy, being noted as Royal Artillery, was more than likely British and NOT born in Newfoundland.

John and his two brothers Thomas and Henry were listed in the will of their father Thomas, farmer, of the White Hills area near St. John's. Thomas senior died age 85. The will was dated 1844 and was in probate 1845. Thomas and Henry both stayed and died in St. John's. Thomas junior died age 85 and Henry age 59. John of the newspaper announcement dying age 83 fits.

MORAN//MURRIN/MURRANT Family Research - Nova Scotia & Newfoundland Connections???

My recent update to previous postings:

I recently was contacted with new info. regarding my GrGrandparents, Lawrence FITZGERALD & Ann (*MORAN/MURRIN) - *these are the spellings as recorded on their daughter/my Grandmother's bapt. record (MORAN) & marr. cert. (MURRIN)....the new details I was sent is as follows: Saint John's Marriages>>Date: August 9,1903>>Place: Pouch Cove, Nfld.>>Name and surname: Lawrence FITZGERALD>>Age: 25>>Condition: Bachelor>>Occupation: Laborer>>Religion: Roman Catholic>>Residence: Northern Bay>>>>>>Name and surname-Ann MURRANT>>Age: 24>>Condition: Spinster>>Religion: Roman Catholic>>Residence: Pouch Cove, Nfld.>>Witnesses: John SHEA and Catherine MURRANT.

As this is the first bit of info regarding my GrGrandparents marriage & another spelling of my GrGrandmother's last name, I'm hoping to have contact with other member(s) who may be related or have information pertaining to these individuals.

Regards, :)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hello, my search has hit the proverbial brick wall with my GrGrandmother, ANNE (MORAN/MURRIN) FITZGERALD. I really don't have much but here goes...

>> According to the first bit of info I found, my Grandparents' marriage certificate listed my GrGrandmother's name spelled as MURRIN...Grandmother, Helen "Nellie" Fitzgerald b. 1904 in New Aberdeen, Nova Scotia to Lawrence Fitzgerald & Annie MURRIN. Grandmother Helen married Grandfather John Whelan (from Colliers, Nfld.) in 1924 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia...GrGrandfather, Lawrence Fitzgerald was b. 1882 in Small Point/Kingston, Bay de Verde/Western Bay, Nfld. (One of his sisters, Elizabeth, married a man named Shea from Pouch Cove area in Nfld. - I was given this info from another relative). {Just to note here as well, GrGrandfather Lawrence's parents are Thomas & Eliza(beth)(nee KING) Fitzgerald from Small Point, Nfld.}

>> According to my Grandmother Helen's baptism record (I found online), her mother's maiden/family name is spelled as "MORAN". As well on another genealogy site GrGrandmother Anne's maiden/family name was also spelled "MORAN".

Hence my road block to finding my GrGrandmother and her family.

If any of my info is familiar or perhaps someone might have any leads that I could pursue, please contact me. Regards, :)
I believe that several siblings of this family moved to the Halifax area.

The first to move would have been Hannah Martin who married George Phillips, a bookbinder from Devon. They moved to Halifax about 1836 and were probably the reason some other MARTIN siblings came. I have found the headstones for both George and Hannah Phillips in Halifax.

The death of a William Martin was also reported in the Times & General Commercial Gazette in St. John's on 2 Dec 1874. No age was given but a note was also for "Halifax Papers Please Copy". So I assume I need to look for something in the Halifax newspapers in December 1874.

Finally, is anyone out there with access to a Halifax newspaper circa October 16 1879. I believe that this John Martin was a brother to Hannah Martin PHILLIPS

Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser
8 Nov 1879

At Halifax, on the 16th ult., John MARTIN, a native of St. John's, N.F., in the 83rd year of his age, leaving a family to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/nfld-roots/200...

I have checked the free online resource novascotiagenealogy.com without success for this family and specifically John's death in October 1879.

Any suggestions, feedback, directions gladly received to resolve this 9 year quest.

Geoff Martin
Calgary

The records are found at LDS FamilySearch:
https://familysearch.org/search You can use the search engine and also the browsing section which is at the bottom of the first page. (Browse all published collections....choose Canada, then Nova Scotia.)
The marriage record for Allan "McAulay" is found using the search engine and you will see that his parents are Donald and Mary. Allan was born in 1831 at Washabuck and married Sarah McDougall on June 19, 1871, at Baddeck, N.S. Her parents are Angus and Sarah.
Here is another good site for Nova Scotia records:
http://www.genealogysearch.org/canada/novascotia.html
You may want to start with the Nova Scotia Historical Vital Stats (first item on list); you'll have to accept the terms and conditions to see these records.
Linda

FamilySearch has the attached Boston, Mass., marriage record for Hector John Patterson and Sadie McAuley which shows his parents to be John Patterson and Maggie McKinnon. Her parents are Allen McAuley and Sarah McDougall. In the 1881 census for N.S., the Pattersons are living at Fourchu, Richmond, N.S. In 1891, they're at Framboise, Richmond, N.S.
FamilySearch also has a record (no image) of the marriage of John Patterson to Margaret McKinnon on February 6th, 1866, at Fourchu, Cape Breton. His father is Angus Patterson and his mother is Peggy McLeod. Her father is Donald McKinnon and her mother is Christine "Maespir".
This may be the family you're researching.
Linda
Age 27 and he is a
brakeman on a train which probably answers your query on how
he ended up in Duluth by 1885 or so.
His parents were both born in Ireland.
Do you know if Hugh had any brothers or sisters???

Hello, I've been looking for your folks since I saw your Query. I haven't been able to find Hugh on the Canadian side but his Death Record of 1939 confirms his father was Thomas Cahill and mother was Ellen Ryan.
Regards Agnes Ann(Grady) Cahill, Hugh's wife, born about 1863 in Guysborough Co.,NS, her parents were Tobias and Elizabeth(O'Gorman)Grady and they moved to Prince Edward Island just before the 1871 Census but you can see the family in the 1881 Census in PEI at the Census Page below.
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e325/e008114773.jpg
About three years later they leave for Duluth, Minn too.
There is a birth record for Richard James Grady, a brother to Agnes in NS Vital Stats (on line) in 1865.
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
Hope this info is useful. You will see on the 1881 Census that Tobias's first three children were born in NS, Guys Co.
It is also interesting that Hugh and Agnes named some of their children after her brothers and father Tobias.
Cheers.

Hi Lindy, I have no connection to the families. I haven't confirmed that Hugh's family went west either. There is a Thomas and Ellen Cahill in the PEI 1881 Census but Ellen's age is forty-two so they may not be Hugh's parents.

I made an error in my first posting, Hugh's mother was Ellen Ryan rather than Grady. You will find Hugh and Ellen's Death record in the following site.
https://familysearch.org/
When you open it, you will see little boxes to put the names in for searching but if you scroll down the page, click on the US and then you will see many sites, such as Minn. Death Records.

Thank you for your reply, and every piece is part of the puzzle. Where may I find a death record for Hugh Cahill? It is interesting that both Cahill and Grady families moved to Duluth about the same time..can you imagine moving with all the children? Wondering how they came, must have been by boat but can't find anything on that. Both had many children and anything you can add will be appreciated. Are you part of either of the families?
This is wrong it isn't the Osborn family but the Wilmot family who married into the Horne family.
The Wilmot was Peter and he was the Chief of the tribe at the Indian Reserve Trust Pictou co. Peter had a son Charles who had a lot to do with them.
Peter is the son of John Wilmot and Mary. He married Isabella Innes d/o Daniel Innes b 1869 and Margaret b 1870 in Scotland.
I guess his other kids didn't do that much they were William S.M b 1879, Margaret 1881 and Frederick AL b Oct 11, 1877 who is the father of Catherine Florence Wilmot b 1903 and married Ambrose Leo Horne and her mother was Maude Osborne.
There is a lot of info on line about this tribe and Chief Philip. The Breau and Bonnevie families came from the island of Miquelon and the Julien family descends from a soldier of the Napoleonic Wars. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1763), the Acadian population was allowed to live in peace in Nova Scotia. Many deported Acadians were granted permission to return to Nova Scotia and their number slowly grew. There were 47 families on the Chezzetcook Inlet by 1815."
