Surnames: Annan, Treneman
We are looking for Susan Lavers Annan (nee Treneman) daughter of James Treneman and Agnes Lavers, christened 8/9/1820 in Ugborough, Devon, England. We don’t have a date for her marriage to Ebenezer Annan (surgeon) but she was pregnant with her first child when he went to Nova Scotia. The baby was born in Halifax but we do not know when or her name. They had at least two more children: Susan Treneman (25/7/1844) and Agnes Lavers (18/7/1847). Liverpool, Queens County. Ebenezer died in 1847 as did the two year old Susan. The Nova Scotia historical society has a wonderful letter that Ebenezer wrote to Susan in 1842 telling her about his voyage and settlement in Nova Scotia, it mentions her pregnancy. The letter was handed down in the family and therefore suggests Susan remained in Canada. We would like to find out what happened to Susan and her children.

Hi, I have just discovered your post having this weekend researched this branch of my husbands family. Agnes Laver Smith is my husbands great grandma on his maternal side. She married Henry Chorlton and went on to have three children one of which was Mabel who was my husbands grandma. I agree finding anything about Ebenezer Annan and his wife and why he went to Nova Scotia, and passenger lists is very difficult, but I have found some bits and pieces about him by Googling "Ebenezer Annan surgeon Nova Scotia" in 1844 he was working as a doctor with the indigenous Indian population providing healthcare and complaing about not being paid! Also there is reference that he fell out with robert, his father who was also a surgeon. Would you be willing to share the excerpts of the letter between Ebenezer and his wife please as we would love to see them. I can't help with Susan I'm afraid but have a photograph of Agnes if you would like me to send you a scanned copy. Best wishes, Jan Lewis

Hi, I see that Jan gave you a bit of info but thought I would also give what I found. You had said you thought Susan may have stayed in Canada.

Here daughter Agnes shows up in England marriages

April 28, 1869 St. Michael in the Hamlet, Toxteth, Lancaster, , England
Thomas Smith age 24, bachelor, iron moulder, son of Daniel Smith, stone mason AND Agnes Lavers Annan, age 22, spinster, daughter of Ebenezer Annan, surgeon in navy

** one interesting bit from this - most records I've seen in England will say deceased beside the father's name if he is, but this does not

and this looks like the family in 1861
1861 WOOLWICH, KENT, ENGLAND
TEARLE
Susan L., age 40, married, dressmaker, born Devonshire
ANNAN
Agnes L., age 15, daughter, governess, born America (Brits Sub.)
James T., age 12, son, shoemaker's apprentice, born America (Brit. Sub)
TEARLE
George, age 9, son, scholar, born East Stonehouse , Devon

So I looked for a marriage for Susan and in East Stonehouse ,Devon there is an 1851 marriage registration for a Susan Lavers Annan to George Tearle

Jan said that Agnes married Henry Chorlton and had children including a Mabel but I found Agnes with husband Thomas Smith in 1901 census and with them is a granddaughter Mabel Marianna Chorlton, age 2

Since Agnes married in 1869 I looked for her in 1871/188/1891 to see what children she had

1871 she is in Texteth Park, Lancashire age 24, with husband Thomas 26, and son John R. 11 months - with them is an Edmund Fearle (Tearle?) age 15 born leighton, Bedfordshire

1881 they are in Toxteth Park, Thomas 36, Agnes 34, John R. 10, George D. 6, Mabel 4, and Lillian 2

1891 they are in Liverpool , Thomas 46, Agnes 44, Mabel 14, Lilian 11, Susan T. 7, Agnes A. 5,

1901 they are in Toxteth Park, Thomas 56, Agnes Lewis ,age 54, John Richardson 30, Lilian 21, Susan Newman 17, Agnes Emily 15, CHORLTON, Mabel Marianna 2 (granddaughter)

she is indexed Agnes Lewis Smith but image is Lavers and Susan's middle name is hard to read so not sure if it is Newman?

1911 they are in Toxteth Park, Thomas 66, Agnes Lavers, 64, Susan Treneman, 25 and CHARLTON, Mabel Marrianne 12 (granddaugther)

so the Treneman middle name for Susan, makes more sense than Newman

Sept. 22, 1897 St. Paul's Church, Princes Park, Lancaster, Mabel Smith, 21, spinster, daughter of Thomas Smith, iron moulder married Henry Chorlton age 26, bachelor, clerk , son of Robert Chorlton, Post office official

March 7, 1903 St. Michael's, Toxteth Park,Lilian Smith age 24, spinster, daughter of Thomas Smith, caretaker and Thomas Leonard Lunt, age 26, bachelor, upholsterer, son of Samuel Lunt, painter

(I know Thomas is shown as caretaker in this one, not iron moulder, but Lilians' address is 5 Ernest St. which matches 1901 census address and in 1901 Thomas is shown as a care keeper, salvation army building)

Aug. 11, 1913 John Richardson Smith, age 43, bachelor, keeper, son of Thomas Smith, iron moulder and Jessie Sheriff age 24, spinster, daughter of David Paxton Sherrif, labourer
** one of the witnesses was Susan Trenenan Smith

June 2, 1915 St. Paul's, Princes Park, Liverpool, Susan Treneman (indexed as Spearman) Smith age 31, spinster, daughter of Thomas Smith (occupation hard to read) and David Joseph James, age 34, bachelor, manager, son of David John James, carpenter

I did not find marriages for son George or daughter Agnes.

IN Free BMD there is a death for an Agens L. Smith born about 1846 died 1923 Liverpool (way the name is indexed)

I'll see what I can find on Susan's sons James Annan and George Tearle

I found a bit more for you.

Susan Lavers Tearle death reg. Jan. 1869 West Derby, Lancashire - age 48
I did not find her in England Calendar of Wills

Agnes Lavers Smith is in the above wills database -
Agnes Lavers Smith of 5 Ernest Street, Liverpool, widow died Oct. 9, 1923. Administration (with will) Liverpool Jan. 3, to John Richardson Smith, buildings keeper. Effects 361 pounds 11 shillings 6d

I have had no luck in finding either James Annan or George Tearle after 1861 census - except for a possible death, England BMD has James Annan born about 1849 death reg. 1898 Fulham, London

Mabel Chorlton born about 1876 died 1898 Liverpool

Hi again, I just came across something interesting while looking for George Tearle. He was born in Devonshire 1852 and we know his father was George as per marriage of Susan to George.

If you google George Osmond Tearle, in wikisource there is quite a write up on him, as he apparently became an actor. According to the entry it says at top Tearle, Osmond 1852-1901, then says full name George Osmond Tearle born march 8, 1862 Plymouth (should read 1852 but their mistake) Plymouth is in Devonshire. It says he was son of George Tearle but no mention of mother.
It says he was married twice. 1.Mary Alice Rowe and actress - they divorced and 2. Marianne Levy, actress. He had one son and one daughter with first wife and tow sons with second wife. Names not shown.

I went back to ancestry to see if he is shown in any trees and he is, in several, and some have photos of him - the one I am looking at right now has his mother as Susan L. with no maiden name,
and also a marriage notice July 31, 1883 Denver, Colorado, USA, Osmond Tearle married Minnie Conway (divorced from Jules Levy). there is quite a bit more
in the article.

and a notice of birth of a son. Fort Wayne Indiana, USA Dec. 1884 - a son born Sunday 12th.It says a Dr. from NY wired Mr. Tearle with the news, so I guess the child was born in NY?

the tree shows 3 children, Frederick Conway Tearle born 1878 NY died 1938 CA, Godfrey Seymour Tearle 1884 NY died 1953 London, England, Malcolm C. Tearle, born 1888 Oxfordshire, England died 1935 London, England
all three show mother as Marianne Minnie Jane Conway
she is shown born 1852 NY died 1896 Cumbria, Cumberland, England
George is shown born 1852 Plymouth, Devon, England died 1901 Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England

He seemed to sometimes go by Osmond and sometimes by George.
He is in 1891 census Middlesborough, Yorkshire
TEARLE
George Osmond, age 39 actor born Plymouth, Devonshire
Marianne C. age 38, wife, actress, born New York, America US
Beatrice A. age 15, daughter born Belfast, Ireland
Malcolm C. age 1, son, born Caversham, Oxford

I wonder where the other two sons were (3 sons if you count the one that was supposed to be from 1st wife)
the tree does not show a first wife
OK found sons - they are in a school, private I guess
1891 Condover, Shropshire, England
TEARLE
Frederick C. age 12,scholar, born New York, United States America
Godfrey S. age 6, scholar, born New York, United States, America

I looked for Beatrice in other records
1881 WEST DERBY, LANCASHIRE
TEARLE
Mary Alice, age 30, dramatic artists wife, born Manchester
George Osmond, age 9, son born Liverpool
Beatrice Alice, age 5, daughter, born Belfast, Ireland
GRINDLE
Catherine, age 51, widow, aunt, born Wexford, Ireland

ENGLAND WILLS

TEARLE, George Osmond of South view west, Newcastle upon Tyne, actor died Sept. 7, 1901. Probate London 13 June to Robert Catt company's secretary and Stephen Wall accountant. effects 233 pounds.

so that seems to be all the children - 4 sons, 1 daughter.

I guess I should always mention witnesses at marriages as I went back to look at all of them and at Agnes' marriage to Thomas Smith one of the witnesses was George Osmond Tearle.

Mary Alice Rowe married George Osmond Tearle in West Derby, Lancashire - marriage registered 1871

I guess Mary Alice must have been Catholic as there is a baptism at St. Francis Xavier's Liverpool, England (in latin) for
Georgius Osmundus Tearle born Jan. 12, 1871 bapt. Feb. 4, 1871, son of Georgui Osmundi and Mariae Alicise Tearle, maiden Rowe
Sponsors Joannis Pierce and Catharina Teresa Grindle

Ireland civil registration births index has Beatrice Alice Tearle registration 1875 Belfast

and Liverpool Catholic marriages (again latin)
April 10, 1871 Georgium Osmundum Tearle of LIverpool, son of Georgis Tearle and Mariam Aliciam Roe of Liverpool , daughter of Joannis Patritia Roe
witnesses David Roe and Isabella Anderson

looks like Mary Alice Tearle died 1887 West Derby, Lancashire, at least women of right name and age is listed in deaths.OK found her in wills
TEARLE, Mary Alice, 12 August 1887, the will of Mary Alice Tearle, (wife of George Tearle) , late of Lorne street , Liverpool in the County of Lancaster who died 29 July 1887 at Lorne Street was proved at Liverpool by Edward Walworth Bell of 25 Lorne Street Commission agent and Catherine Teresa Grindle of 23 Lorne Street, widow, the Aunt the Executors. Personal estate 230 pounds.

So far they a e all dying quite young

Godfrey died 1953 as the tree said and in the Will listing he is shown as Sir Godfrey Seymour, knight of 19 Queen Anne St. London died 8 June 1953 at 18 Bentinck St. london. Probate London to Richard Alan Kinnersly, solicitor. Effects 13,641 pounds 15 shillings 10 d, so he was pretty well off

Malcolm is in death index for 1953 but do not find him in Wills

I found Frederick Conway Tearle in USA - WW1 draft reg. cards
born May 17, 1879 , address Hotel Reisenwebber, NY
he is an actor with Vitagraph Co. and his wife is Adele Tearle, same address

he is shown in some Motion Picture Studio directories , listed as Conway Tearle and if you look at the entries, he did quite a few movies

in his passport app. April 1920, Conway Teale, he says he as born May 17, 1883, father George O. Tearle, born England, deceased
Conway wants to travel to Bahama to make a motion picture
there is a photo of him attached and does look like he could be an actor - he asked for his passport to be sent to Selznick Picture Corp. Fort Lee, NJ

there is also a passport app for Godfrey Tearle, says he was born Oct. 12, 1884 NY, he is an actor and is applying at the US embassy in London. Also a photo attached and he definitely looks like he would have been an actor, very theatrical looking. He says there is no one in London to swear he is American citizen but that his brother Conway Tearle is also an actor and can be reached at Brown's Chap House, Broadway, NY City to confirm.

Hi,

Thank you so much for all this information and taking the time to research and write it all up. Many apologies for not responding sooner.....I have been busy with work and therefore not on Ancestry quite so much!
The whole story line is fascinating and I've looked up a lot about the Tearle's as actors and directors....while not blood relatives.....incredibly interesting in its own right.
You are correct that I've muddled my generations in some areas and your version is indeed the correct one! It's hard enough researching ones own family history, but this one is my husbands so I do sometimes lose the plot with who is related to who. I've been sharing this with his cousins one of whom lives in New Zealand where her parents emigrated to in the 1960's from Liverpool and the other one who now resides in Paris.....it's a family spread out around the world!
Again, thank you so much for sharing this, it's very much appreciated.
