This is not a name that I am researching but I am familiar with sites that might help you. They are free and searchable and you do not have to join or sign up to use them. The Nova Scotia Archives site uses a viewer program to enable you to see the actual documents but it is free and very simple to download onsite.

Canadian censuses are available at the Library and Archives Canada site. This site, along with the Nova Scotia Archives does not do “fuzzy searches” which means that you have to have the names exactly as it is transcribed to find it. The site below allows you to use the wildcard symbol which helps. So, for instance, when I looked for “Michael” I put in “Mich*”. Which proved to be a good thing as the name on the census document is spelled “Moichal.

Below is direct link to the 1881 Census page with Mabel’s family. She was 5 years old in 1881 and had 5 older siblings and 2 younger. The family listed next on this page is that of William and Ellen Ryan with 4 children. Since he is just 4 years younger than Michal, I would suspect he is a brother.

The writing (and spelling) on the 1871 Census is much better and lists Michel age 30 and the head of a family consisting of wife Mary J., son Joseph, age 10, daughter Gertrude age 3, Margret (probably his mother, listed as a widow) and William age 28 (probably the William with the young family listed on the 1881 Census.

The Nova Scotia Vital Stat site can be found at
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/start.aspx

The birth record of Mabel Ryan born 1876 in Lower Prospect dau of Michael Ryan and Jane Coolin can be found there along with probably records of many others her the family. For instance I found the marriage record of Gertrude Ryan age 18, dau of Michael and Mary J. She married Andrew Mahar in 1886 in Halifax Co. And, sadly the death record on this site for Gertrude Mahar records her death in 1890 of phthsis, an old name for tuberculosis.

Another interesting marriage record from the Vital Stat site is the marriage in Halifax of Catherine Ryan daughter of Michael and Jane to John Sullivan of East Boston (born County Cork) in 1882. Is he a brother to the Lewis Sullivan who married Mabel?

Hope this is of some help
