Mrs. Mary LaPointe's obituary appeared in the Milford Cabinet (New Hampshire) on June 6, 1940. It reads as follows:

"The very sudden death of Mrs. Mary LaPointe at her home Sunday night brought grief to many homes as Mrs. La Pointe has been one of the helpful and uplifting ladies since she and her family became residents of our town. Her activity in the Home Circle, the Wednesday Club, the Wayside Circle, the Grange, and at the summer fair was given willingly as a loyal member of each organization. Her personality won many friends. The loss will be greatly regretted.
Mrs. Mary La Pointe was born in St. Anne de Rouisseau, P.Q., April 4, 1890. Survivors include her husband, Henry LaPointe, and her six children, Mrs Margaret Clancey of Stoneham, Mass., Mrs Marion Merrill of Milford, Miss Mildred Welch, Miss Ruth Welch, and John and James Welch, all of Mont Vernon.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary La Pointe were held at St. Patrick's church, Milford, Wednesday, June 5, under the direction of John T. Smith and Son, Milford. Interment was at St. Patrick's cemetery, Stoneham, Mass."

If I understand the relationships correctly, my friend's grandmother would be Mildred.

Honore/Henry LaPointe married Mrs. Lucy O. (Trombly) Bisson in 1941. Both Henry and Lucy are buried in Amherst, NH (St. Patrick Cemetery). Mary's son James is also buried in the same cemetery in Amherst.

I hope this gives some information you can use--thanks for all your help!

I will pass the information along; my friend may have some of the more recent data. I can't remember her relationship to the Welch family, but it's a direct one. Thanks so much!

[If it is the same family, James is buried in Stoneham Mass; d. 1924 according to headstone--also buried there is wife, Mary, death date 1940 and Albert (d. 1930), plus Margaret E and her husband. Also listed on stone are James & Edmund Surette, but no dates are listed for either of them, so unsure if they are actually buried there. Surette/Surrette was Mary's mother's maiden name.]

A friend of mine is looking at this same family group. She found a marriage record for James Henry Welch (b. 1877; son of Bartholomew & Catherine (Quinn) Welch) and "Ellen Mary Budreau" showing they married in Wakefield MA (James' hometown) on April 16 1911. Apparently, the "Mary" and "Ellen" are reversed on some records--go figure. Anyway, her parents on the marriage record are listed as Albert W. and Maud (Surrette) Budreau (probably should read "Boudreau"), and her birth place is listed as Eel Brook N.S.

I am guessing you have that information already, but I thought I'd send it just in case. My friend is a descendant of James and Mary, and she is looking for any information on them that she can find!

Hi, Jared. A bit belated but a comment by Sheila Coulton indicates that:

"The Elizabeth who later married Samuel and then John A. Smith, was b. @1831, in Kempton/Kimpton, NS, and was the d/o Thomas and Susanna."

actually refers to Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB. Elizabeth (Lizzie) was:

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Adelaide Flewelling b. Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB 8MAY1831 (ca. 1832) baptized Trinity Anglican Church, Kingston, Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB 7AUG1831, m. 1st at her father's residence, Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB by the Rev. W. E. Scovil 3NOV1870 Capt. Samuel Foote (b. 8MAY1830; m. 1st 1856 Susan Ellis (b. ca. 1833, d. 19DEC1869), d/o Samuel and Susan Ellis), s/o Samuel and Keziah (Killam) Foote (or Samuel and Christine (Moore) Foote); m. 2nd Tiverton, Digby Co., NS 21NOV1880 John A. Smith (b. Barrington, NS ca. 1821-2; m 1st _____), s/o Enid? and Maria Smith.

Or so I have it so far. Lizzie was a daughter of:

Thomas Abraham Flewelling b. 1794-5, d. Central Norton, Norton Parish, Kings Co., NB 14JAN1883 age 89 years, m. 12MAY1817 Susannah Craft Puddington (b. 4NOV1799, d. Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB 20JUN1861 age 61 years), d/o William and Esther (Wetmore) Puddington.

This would rather neatly explain why Edwin Ellis Foote married Lizzie's niece.

I am still working on some of this but thought I would comment in passing.

Thomas.
Well, given she was a niece to Daniel and Mary, she was most likely a daughter of one of Daniel's brothers. Daniel was son of Angus Gillis and Mary Ann Lawlor/Lawler, here are the other known children:

SOme children for Angus and Mary:

Margaret, b. 10-Nov-1866, Manchester, Guysborough Co, NS. prob. died young.
Sarah Margaret, b. 06-Dec-1868 or 1869, Manchester.

Male sons of Angus and Miss Lawlor/Lawler:

John Hugh Gillis, b. @1859
Daniel J. Gillis, b. @1860, d. 1915
Angus A. Gillis, b. @1864
David William Gillis, b. @1875
Hugh Gillis, b. @1877.

So, John Hugh, Angus A., David Wm, or Hugh could be the father of your grandmother. Wish I had time to dig deeper.

Jared
Hello.

My grandmother (now deceased) was born - according to family information June 15, 1897. We had thought she was born in Boston, of Daniel Gillis and Mary Gillis (Trahan). In census information I can find several references to her being the niece of Daniel and Mary, not the daughter, and it appears she came to Boston around 1899/1900 from Nova Scotia. I can find another Mary Gillis born the same date in Pictou, but I can see her in British Columbia when I know my grandmother is in Boston so it must be a coincidence. Mary Trahan was the daughter of Benjamin and Eliza (Furlong). Any information would be so appreciated.

Thanks for all the specifics. However; We are having difficulty getting the book from New England Genealogical Society. Is there something special we must do? Is the book available on the open market like Amazon or some other site?
My wife and I are also having a difficult time finding all our posts on the message boards relative to this topic. Could you provide your exact e-mail address to me so I may contact you directly. Would I be able to contact Ruth Long directly?
John Jacob Long b. Prussia. Was of Clements Twp in Annapolis Co, NS in 1791

Peter was a s/o John Jacob Long, and had a brother, Jacob.

Peter married Martha Langley, 1807, d/o John Langley, Jr.
Peter died 11-Jan-1858, aged 72.

John Henry Long, b. @1826 was youngest child of Peter and Martha.

John Henry Long b. 1821-1831 m. Caroline Amelia Sprowle, d/o James Sprowle and Lydia Messenger (see also Sproul).

Caroline d. 03-Feb-1888, at Cambridgeport, MA, aged 55. John H. Long d. 1900.

Other? LONGs of interest: Alexander, was of Clements with 100 acres in 1783/84, married, no children.
Peter Long, was of Digby in 1784, married, no children.

Following is from Wayne Walker's analysis of the LONG families in Annapolis early on:

Analysis of the early LONG families of Clements Township.
A Jacob LONG was listed as a tax-paying resident of Clements Township under the 1791
Capitation Tax Act, Calnek pages 251-2.
In the 1827 Census for Clements Township, there were two LONG families:
a. Peter LONG, a Methodist and a farmer, with seven children, four males and three females for
a total of 9 in the family (assuming his wife was still living). With seven children, Peter was
probably married at least 10-12 years prior to the 1827 census, and likely born in the late 1780's
to early 1790's.
b. Jacob LONG, also a Methodist and a farmer, with four children, three males and one female
for a total of six in the family (assuming his wife was still living). With four children, Jacob was
probably married 6-7 years prior to the 1827 census, and likely born in the late 1790's.
In the 1838 Census for Clements Township, there were three LONG families:
a. Peter LONG, with a total of eight in the family, one male under 6 years; one male aged 6-14
years, 1 female aged 6-14 years, three males over 14 years (plus wife and self).
b. Jacob LONG, also with a total of eight in the family, one male and one female under 6 years;
one male and two females aged 6-14 years; and one male over 14 years (plus wife and self).
c. William LONG, with just his wife, no children.
It would appear that Peter and Jacob were probably brothers, children of the Jacob LONG listed
in the 1791 Tax assessment. Peter was probably older than Jacob and married before Jacob. The
William LONG listed in the 1838 Census was possibly one of the sons of Peter as Peter had
seven children listed in 1827. With seven children, a son could well have been aged 10 or more
and could have married by 1838.
From The CHUTE Genealogy, Page 32 (which is a little confusing)
Peter LONG married (1st) 1807 Martha LANGLEY
Isaac WOODBURY married (1st) 18 Nov 1823 Martha CHUTE, daughter of Benjamin CHUTE.
Martha (LANGLEY) LONG died
Peter LONG married (2nd) Elizabeth (BROTHA) ORD, widow of James ORDE, she was born in
1807 (therefore 21 years younger than Peter) (MY comment - was there a Peter, Jr.?)
Peter LONG, born 1786, died 11 Jan 1858, aged 72
Martha (CHUTE) WOODBURY, wife of Isaac, died 26 Jan 1859
Isaac WOODBURY married (2nd) Elizabeth (BROTHA, ORDE) LONG, widow of Peter LONG
Isaac WOODBURY died in 1863
Elizabeth (BROTHA, ORDE, LONG) WOODBURY died in 1883 aged 76
According to CHUTE, Peter had 10 children: Jacob, Ephriam, John, William m. Martha
LANGLEY, Dexter, Joel, Fletcher, Lydia, Ann and Beulah.

As you can see, Wayne has done a LOT of work on this analysis, and I'd venture there may be "holes" in the Chute Genealogy on this family, or redundancies, perhaps?

Jared
I have been trying to find additional ancestors of mine who came from the Annapolis/Digby area. My GGGRandfather was John H. Long (b...1826, d...1900). He married Caroline Amelia Sproule in the Wesleyan Aylesford Methodist church. Both are buried in the Clementsvale Cemetery (stone #117). We have no additional info on his parents etc. John and Caroline show up on the Hessian Line Canadian 1881 Census. My grandfather told all the grandchildren years ago that tracing the Long heritage might be difficult because he was told a young boy was saved at sea when a ship coming from England (?) was lost at sea. All the boys family was lost and the young boy was taken in (adopted) by a family named Long. For all these years we thought the Long surname was English, but it appears the true origin might be German as this is stated on the 1881 census for John H. Long. I hired a Genealogist out of the Annapolis area but she only turned up one clue which was a land grant from Jacob Long to John H. Long...........no details were provided. Any and all info relative to John H. Long and his ancestors would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help/assistance.

Lewis H. Long

Just re-read the posts here, I would also suggest that you look under the other spellings of Robicheau...mostly the typical Robichaud spelling...I have even seen it spelled Robishaw...which is way out there...also on "Mary", try Marie...I have found that many of the old French spelling were transfrred over to English phonetically.
Hi Shirley,

First, Merry Christmas to you.

Second, I am very glad to meet a distant cousin.

Third. I am the gg grandson of Reverend William A. McGregor and would be pleased to exchange all the information I have about him with you.

The previous post gives you the marriage information where I also first heard that his mother's name was Elizabeth. Many feel that his mother was Lucy Whitman but this has proven to be false. He may be the son of John McGregor and Elizabeth Bovyer of Harrington, PEI. I am continuing to research all of the PEI McGregors to verify this.

Please contact me at kmacgadams@alum.mit.edu so we can exchange information.

All the best,

Kevin MacGregor Adams
Norfolk, Virginia, USA

Re: melanson

Luc Melanson died 08-Jan-1937 at Comeauville. On death record, DOB listed as 21-Nov-1866.
It would appear he was the son of Marc Mellanson and Helene Robichaud. His wife was listed as Marte Boudreau. His son, Leo, was the informant. Luc was buried 10-Jan-1937 at Church Point.

Mary Marthe (Boudreau) Melanson, d. 12-Apr-1942, Little Brook Station, Digby Co. Her listed DOB was 08-Mar-1869, she was widowed (naturally), the daughter of Maxime L. Boudreau and Colombe Maillet.
She was also buried Church Point (14-Apr-1942). Her son, Alphie, was the informant.

Marie Arsene Gedry b. 11-Nov-1901, Meteghan, Digby Co, NS.
Parents listed as Moise Gedry and Juliette Gedry.

Joseph Marc Melanson married Marie Arsene Geddry (Geddy on transcription), Meteghan Church, Clare Mun., Digby Co, NS on 11-Oct-1921. He was 29, b. Little Brook Station, to Luc Melanson, born same, and Marie Marthe Boudreau. She was 20, b. Meteghan, Digby Co, d/o Moise Geddry b. Metethan, and Juliette Geddry.

In 1871 census, Luc/Luke's father, Marc, is 66, his mother Hellen M. is 43. She is 53 and widowed by 1881 census. Luc had a brother, Constan William, b. @1858, both are with their mother in 1881. and brother is gone by 1891, when Luc is HoH with new wife, Mary M. aged 22, and his mother, then 63 and obviously still widowed. Census records from Clare and Church Point in Digby Co, NS. His father, Marc, b. @1805, MAY be the one found in Clare Township as early as 1838. In that record, thre were eight in his household! He, his wife (first wife, I'd presume, IF the right Marc) 2 boys under 6, 1 girl under 6, and 3 males 6-14.

He'd have been 33, so having six children would have been quite possible. In that 1838 census, over in Digby, there was an earlier Luc Melanson, with 5 in his home.

Another variant for Jeddry/Geddry is Joudrey, though the GED and JED with any form of DRY DRIE RIE REY RY RE afterwards seem more prominent in Digby County in the late 19th century.

More often seen as MOSES GEDRE, we find him in 1871, aged 6, son of Jean Joseph, aged 45 and Pricilla M., aged 42. With them in 1881, now aged 15, then, in 1891, aged 26, he is listed as married to "July", aged 24.

Many others in that household of Jean Joseph's! The matching "July" is listed as Julite Gedre in 1871 and 1881 aged 4 and 14, respectively. She was d/o Superien Gedre aged 55 in 1871 and 67 in 1881, and Elizabeth, aged 46 in 1871 and 56 in 1881, widowed and 67 by 1891 (so Superian died 1881-1891).

Moses Jeddry d. 15-Nov-1944 at St. Alphonse, Digby Co, NS. He was listed b. 30-Aug-1866, s/o "John" Jeddry and Pricille Durgin??? He was listed as widowed, his son, Freeman was informant. He was buried in St. Alphonse, on 17-Nov-1944.

Hope some of the above is helpful to you!

Jared

This is not a family that I am connected with but I thought I’d take a look and see if I could find anything to help you. The LDS Church has a free online site that has a lot of material.
www.familysearch.org
I found baptismal records as follows:
name:	Elizabeth Comeau
gender:	Female
baptism/christening date:	29 Sep 1884
baptism/christening place:	SAINTE MARIE CATHOLIC, CHURCH POINT, DIGBY, NOVA SCOTIA
birth date:	26 Sep 1884
father's name:	Joseph Comeau
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name:	Madeleine Comeau
mother's birthplace:

And another for a Margaret:
name:	Mariam Margaritam Comeau
gender:	Female
baptism/christening date:	07 Jun 1877
baptism/christening place:	ETOILE DE LA MER CATHOLIC,METEGHAN,DIGBY,NOVA SCOTIA
father's name:	Josephi Comeau
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name:	Magdalena Comeau

The dates correspond well with your known birthdates for Elizabeth and Margaret. Its difficult to make any conclusions about whether Magdalena and Madeleine are the same woman. The name variation certainly might be a transcribers error. One would have to see the original record to be sure.
There are two marriages between a Joseph Comeau and Madelaine; one in 1874 and one 1876.
Both marriage records can be seen on the Nova Scotia Vital Stat site
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca
This is a free site maintained by the Nova Scotia Provincial Archives. You will need to download a viewer program which is free onsite to see the actual record. Briefly they are as follows:

Digby County Registration Year 1876 Book 1812, page 89, #4
Joseph Comeau age 21, bachelor, shoemaker, son of Anselme and Mary
Madelaine Comeau age 24, spinster, dau of Luke and Elizabeth

Digby County Reg Year 1874 Book 1812, page 80, #129
Joseph Comeau age 24, bachelor, farmer son of Justinian and Rosely
Madeline Comeau age 22, spinster dau of Oliver and Elizabeth

I’ll be honest and say that it’s very hard to sort out all the Comeau’s in the Census for various reasons. Partly because some of the same names are used over and over; partly because how they appear on the Census depends greatly on how well the census taker can spell and whether he is French-speaking or not. Also the use of middle names was very common.

The Digby County GenWeb site has a combined Census spreadsheet for the years 1871, 1881 and 1891. I’m not sure if the formatting will carry through when I post but I’ll try. The columns are: name, then community (ie: CP stands for Church Point). The next 3 columns follow the family through the 3 decades above. The “m” after the age stands for “married; “w” for “widower

COMEAU, Anselm B. Cl,CP	42m	51m	63w	Blacksmith
Madelene 45m	54m	-
Joseph 16	*
Moses 15	25	-	shoemaker
Monique 13	21	-	seamstress
Abeline 11	20	-	servant
Henry 9	19	28 blacksmith
Otile, Odelle 9	18	27
Evangeline 7	14	25
Nesiphore 5	12	23
Charles 32	*
BOUDREAU, Nisese, Nazaire -	2	12

COMEAU, Joseph CP -	27m
Magdelene -	30m
Maggie -	3
Ida -	2
Hilarion - 5/12 Oct

Since the Joseph who would appear to be the one you are looking for was living next door to Anselm Comeau, I would suggest that the couple who married in 1876 is the correct Joseph and Madelaine. Also the fact that his brother Moses was a shoemaker and the Joseph who married in 1876 was a shoemaker points in that direction,.

I don’t know if this will add anything to your research but it may help some. It would also be helpful to know who your Elizabeth married. What was her married name?
Fine Mary, I've had a look in Vital Stats but found nothing for certain. You can have a look on Google Maps to see pictures of the French shore as we call it and drive along the road called Evangeline Trail and see the area of Grosses Coques. Tis a great drive from Yarmouth NS to Weymouth NS and the french people along this French Shore are very friendly with beautiful homes. I should have added prior, it is mandatory for all Comeau folks that trace their lines from the French Shore, to plan a visit to that place and hopefully attend a huge Comeau Family reunion one summer.
Cheers Mary..

The Margaret marrying James bit just about confirms that this could be my family. On Elizabeth's obituary her sister's name was Margaret O'Keefe. It's a great branching point. Thank you so very much.

Very good, Mary. A couple more observations for you.
Ida Commeau applied for a birth Certificate in 1943, and you will see it in NS Vital Stats. She was living in Mass. I also found a marriage record for her in Jan. 1912 in Chelsea Mass. to a Joseph Gilbrook. Ida says her parents were Joseph and Mary Magdelene Comeau and that her Dad was a seaman at the time of her birth which agrees with the 1881 Census.
Margaret married James O'Keefe Nov. 18, 1906 in Mass.
So you still need to trace Hilarion and Martine. Likely more info in NS Vital Stats on them.
Cheers.
Well, thank you for your help and for the new leads. I appreciate it. I have been trying to gather information on this part of my family for quite some time. You have given me something new to work with. Thank you again! Mary
